My wife wants a divorce; if she ruins my life, I'll leave.
Chapter 77 Returning Home
The Wang family banquet was attended by many people, and she blended in unnoticed. Apart from greeting a few ladies she often visited, no one took the initiative to chat with her. On the other hand, Li Furong and Princess Pingyang were both extremely busy and were mostly nowhere to be seen. She didn't care at all; it was normal for someone of low rank in the Song family to be neglected.
It wasn't until late afternoon that guests began to leave one after another. After most of them had left, Meng Ruohua took Song Tian and Song Xi with her.
After getting into the carriage in front of the mansion, they saw Song Chen'an shortly afterward.
Meng Ruohua lowered the curtain expressionlessly, too lazy to look at his hypocritical face.
Exhausted, Song Tian slumped to the side, listlessly taking off the necklace from her neck. She handed it to Song Xi, saying, "Here, take this!"
Song Xi hesitated for a moment, then glanced at Meng Ruohua who was resting with her eyes closed. Seeing that she did not react, she timidly took the item.
She always pretended to be timid in front of Song Tian, so Song Tian looked down on her and was too lazy to even bully her. Therefore, Song Xi has lived a relatively peaceful life over the years, at least much better than other concubine daughters.
In less than a quarter of an hour, the group returned to the Song residence.
After getting off the carriage, they went to Rongxi Courtyard to report to the Second Madam. They chatted briefly about the Wang family's prosperity before Song Tian impatiently interrupted them.
"Mother, if you want to know, I'll tell you in detail later. Let me go back and change my clothes now, I'm exhausted!" She leaned back in her chair without any decorum, her eyes half-closed, and said weakly.
Seeing that the four women looked exhausted, the second madam didn't say anything more and waved them away. However, she stopped Song Tian and said, "If you're tired, don't run back and forth. Just have Qingping bring your clothes over to change."
Just as Song Tian wanted, she waved Qingping away and then said to the Second Madam, "The Wang family invited many people, but I don't know most of them. Apart from Qin Man, I know Qian Chuhan from the Qian family, Wang Yixuan from the Wang family (a branch of the Wang family), and the daughters of several commanders and officers. I don't have the patience to deal with them."
Her explanation was so simple that it couldn't satisfy the second wife's curiosity at all. Seeing that her daughter was too tired to talk, she stopped talking about it.
Meng Ruohua returned to Qingfeng Courtyard, where Yu Ye helped her change into a set of casual and comfortable clothes. She let her hair down and simply tied it up at the back of her head with a hairpin.
Visiting other people's homes can be tiring!
She was lying on the low couch, half asleep, when she was startled awake by a loud shout from outside the door.
"Get out of my way!" Song Chen'an shouted.
Linglong stood with her head down, blocking the doorway, her tone calm and unhurried, "The Second Young Mistress has just fallen asleep. Second Master, please wait until she wakes up before you speak."
"Sleeping in broad daylight, what a lack of manners!" Song Chen'an became angrier the more he thought about it after returning home, partly because he was angry at the cold treatment he had received, and partly because of Meng Ruohua's arrogant attitude.
She hasn't said a single word to me since she left home today.
He didn't suspect anything between Meng Ruohua and Yu Yan. Yu Yan was cold and aloof; no woman would like someone like that. It would be good enough if she wasn't scared away. He just assumed they were acquaintances who greeted each other when they met.
Madam Lin, standing at the door, couldn't help but advise, "Second Master, you should go back first. I'll have the Second Young Mistress come to Hengxi Courtyard to find you when she wakes up."
Although Madam Lin really wanted Song Chen'an to come into the house, the Second Master hadn't stayed overnight at Qingfeng Courtyard even once in the past two or three months. Aunt Lü always used the two children as an excuse to call Song Chen'an over, being all lovey-dovey—what if she got pregnant again!
Song Chen'an, who was standing at the door, was stopped by someone. The cold winter wind blew him away, and his anger subsided slightly. Looking at the silent inner room, he flicked his sleeve and left.
Meng Ruohua was woken up by the noise. She was still groggy, and after she understood what had happened, she was about to call Song Chen'an in when she heard him leave. Meng Ruohua didn't try to stop him and just lay back down.
You're really energetic! After a whole day of trouble, you still have the energy to cause her trouble!
As her drowsiness subsided, she closed her eyes to rest, but in her mind she was thinking about finding something for him to do.
As the sun set, Madam Lin came into the house and woke Meng Ruohua, saying, "Second Master came over in such a hurry, I'm afraid something has happened. Second Young Madam, you should go and see him."
Meng Ruohua lazily let Lin Mama dress her, but said, "Don't worry, Second Master just came because he was too free."
Lin's mother scolded, "It's good that you're free. Why don't you two have a good talk and talk things out? How can you live like this if you're always arguing?" She put Meng Ruohua's hair back up and gently advised, "What knot can't a young couple untie? If you both give in to each other, it will pass. If you insist on being stubborn, won't you be the one who suffers? We women need our sons to rely on."
Meng Ruohua remained calm and composed, letting Lin's mother's nagging go in one ear and out the other, completely ignoring it.
After Lin's mother tidied her up, she said, "Nanny, don't worry about me. You should go home and visit your brother more often. Getting him well is the most important thing."
"His health is the important thing, but your business isn't?" Lin's mother retorted.
Meng Ruohua smiled slightly, her eyes sparkling. She coaxed Lin's mother to leave, "It's important business, not urgent business. The weather is about to change, so I'm giving you three days off. Go home and take good care of your grandpa."
Lin's mother was very happy to hear that there was a holiday. She didn't have to work and could still receive her monthly salary as usual. Who wouldn't like that?
But she disagreed and complained, "I think Miss thinks I'm too old and nagging, right?"
"How could that be? I just wanted you to go home and spend more time with Grandpa. He spent most of his time with me when I was little."
This topic really touched Lin's mother's heart. Back then, she could endure it in order to earn money. Now that she has some wealth and lives a comfortable life, she feels guilty when she thinks back to those days. Her son barely drank any milk and grew up drinking rice cereal like a kitten.
Lin's mother said no more, went back to her room to pack her things and went home. Before leaving, she handed Meng Ruohua's unfinished new clothes to Linglong, "If the second young mistress is in a hurry, take them to the sewing room and have someone finish them. If you're not in a hurry, just wait for me to come back and finish them."
Meng Ruohua knew that Lin's mother was still devoted to her, but she felt uncomfortable around her, so she always found things for Lin's mother to do to keep her from constantly being around her.
Call her petty if you want, but she doesn't want to shortchange herself at all.
The sky outside the window was overcast, and the howling north wind lashed against the window, making the paper windows rustle loudly.
Coral entered the room, lit the lamp, and brought over two plates of pastries. Then she stood in front of Meng Ruohua and said, "Aunt Sun stood in Rongxi Courtyard for half a day and fainted at noon. The Second Madam refused to call a doctor. It was only after the Fourth Miss returned to the mansion that someone went to invite the Master back and a doctor was finally called."
Meng Ruohua held a cup of hot tea, the steam rising and instantly filling the air before her eyes.
"Did the Second Master say anything?"
"The second master lost his temper in the lotus courtyard, saying he wanted to settle accounts with the second madam. The fourth young lady held him back and persuaded him for a long time before he finally went inside."
Coral was outside the courtyard wall at the time when she heard the usually gentle and refined Second Master's furious voice, which startled her.
