I traveled back to ancient times, but I was able to lie down and relax.
Chapter 16 The Old School
Liu Nanjia and her two siblings, along with Aunt Wang, arrived at the old schoolhouse in the village, which would be their place to stay.
This place was originally the home of an old scholar who came from elsewhere and settled in Dushui Village.
Because he was a student who had only completed the preliminary examinations, the village head at the time asked him to teach the village children to read, so he simply turned his home into a school.
The old scholar had no descendants. After his death, Liu, a scholar he had taught, took over the teaching job until two years ago.
The village head had already gone back, while Aunt Wang and her husband Wang Dahe stayed behind to help. Liu Yanxi put down his younger sister and took the money he had just received to go find Doctor Li to get medicine.
Her illness cannot be delayed any longer.
The school had been abandoned for two years, and since Liu Xiucai had never lived here, it was covered in a thick layer of dust and needed to be thoroughly cleaned.
Liu Nanjia and Aunt Wang first tidied up the bed, which was left behind by the old scholar from back then, and fortunately it was still quite sturdy.
After making the bed, I quickly put Liu Sirou on it so she could rest, and then I started cleaning the other rooms.
The house wasn't big, just three rooms in a row, but it was enough for the three siblings.
Liu Nanjia still lives with her younger sister; they live in the old scholar's original bedroom.
The central hall is the largest and was where the children used to have classes. It still contains many tables, chairs, and benches. This area will be preserved so that Liu Yanxi can continue to teach here in the future.
The room on the right is divided in the middle into two rooms: one is a study, and the other is a place to store miscellaneous items.
Liu Nanjia and Aunt Wang put several tables together in the study to make a temporary bed for Liu Yanxi, which would be his room from now on.
The kitchen, a simple shed, is located outside and is the most dilapidated due to long-term disuse. Wang Dahe is currently repairing it, as cooking is impossible without a stove.
After a lot of work, the group finally managed to tidy it up to a point where it was habitable.
Liu Nanjia wanted to invite Aunt Wang and her husband to stay for dinner, but they refused.
Having helped them solve a major problem, Aunt Wang's tone was very cheerful: "Don't be so polite with us. You should keep your food for yourselves. My two boys are still at home; I have to go back and cook for them."
Uncle Wang was a very honest and kind man. He smiled and said, "You don't have any elders, so feel free to ask if you need anything in the future. I just did a simple repair on the stove today, so it'll be fine for now. I'll come back and fix it properly when I have time."
After sending the couple home, Liu Nanjia forced herself to cook a simple meal, while Liu Yanxi prepared medicine for his younger sister. After eating and feeding her the medicine, they went back to their room and fell asleep immediately.
I'm completely exhausted after experiencing so much today.
The next morning, Liu Nanjia woke up a little later than usual.
Even though she's in a new place, last night was the most restful night's sleep she's had since arriving here.
Having left behind relatives who showed no affection, I will have to rely on myself for everything from now on, and I will be able to take full control of everything in my own hands.
The first thing I did after getting up was to touch Liu Sirou's forehead; it wasn't so hot anymore.
Last night, when I was feeding her and giving her medicine, my little sister woke up and learned that the family had been separated and she was living at the school. She was very happy, and I think her improved condition is also related to knowing this good news.
Liu Nanjia breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Si Rou's health had improved, otherwise she would have felt even more guilty.
I got sick because I was running around with them.
She actually took advantage of her younger sister's illness to be able to separate the family property this time.
If we wanted to treat her illness as soon as possible, a better approach would have been to take her directly to Doctor Li yesterday morning and use the money they had saved over the past few days to get medicine, enough for at least two days.
She chose to make a scene over this, and although the outcome was good, it delayed her younger sister's treatment to some extent, and she didn't take her second dose of medicine until that evening.
Fortunately nothing happened.
I'll continue cleaning the house today.
Before that, of course, we had to eat breakfast, although it was still multigrain porridge and there weren't even any vegetables.
After all, we just arrived here last night and didn't even have time to dig for wild vegetables.
But Liu Nanjia felt at ease eating there; it was definitely because her mindset had changed.
After the meal, the brother and sister went about their own business.
Liu Yanxi tidied up the courtyard. It turned out that the old scholar lived alone and there was almost nothing in the courtyard. They planned to turn it into a vegetable garden and grow some vegetables themselves.
Liu Nanjia continued tidying up the house. Given the limited resources, she could only use what she had, but at least she had to clean it thoroughly.
After cleaning the entire room and wiping down the boxes, desk, chairs, and other items, Liu Nanjia was so exhausted that she could barely stand up straight.
Liu Sirou has woken up, but her fever hasn't completely subsided.
Liu Nanjia forced him to continue resting in bed.
After resting for a while, she planned to go out and dig for some wild vegetables. She didn't have time in the morning, and she couldn't just drink porridge again in the evening.
As soon as they stepped outside, they ran into Aunt Wang, who was on her way to deliver something to them.
"You just moved in and don't have anything. I brought you some vegetables, all homegrown, they're not worth much. Nan Jia, are you planning to move out?"
"I was just about to go out to find wild vegetables," Liu Nanjia said, quickly welcoming her into the courtyard.
"There really isn't any food at home, so I won't stand on ceremony. Thank you, Aunt Wang." Without much formality, Liu Nanjia accepted the vegetables.
I already owe Aunt Wang a lot, so this little bit won't make a difference. I'll find a chance to repay her later.
Afterwards, Liu Nanjia still went out and headed up the mountain with Aunt Wang.
She was thinking about whether she could catch another wild rabbit or something, since she hadn't eaten meat for several days.
But good luck doesn't always come, and sometimes you end up catching nothing.
However, she did find something: lichen.
This thing looks a bit like wood ear fungus; Liu Nanjia ate it in a restaurant in her past life.
Aunt Wang was quite surprised. It was stuck to the ground and was dark, so it didn't look like something that could be eaten.
"Nanjia, why are you picking this? Don't get a stomachache from eating it."
There are so many different kinds of plants on the mountain that they don't dare to pick any they don't recognize, because someone had an accident before when they ate something picked from the mountain.
Liu Nanjia smiled and said, "Don't worry, Aunt Wang, I know Cai Cai. My dad told me before that this is lichen, which is similar to wood ear fungus. It's delicious when stir-fried with eggs, and it can also be eaten cold."
Aunt Wang was relieved to hear this. Since it was Liu Xiucai who said it, there was no problem, so she picked some as well.
I was thinking, "As expected of a scholar, he knows so much."
Finding this today wasn't a wasted trip; it also enriches the meals at home.
Then I dug up some common wild vegetables and picked a few herbs that I found.
After saying goodbye to Aunt Wang after descending the mountain, it was time to prepare dinner.
When Liu Nanjia got home, she noticed a few eggs at the bottom of the basket that Aunt Wang had brought. She took out three eggs and cooked them with some freshly picked lichen to make a stir-fried lichen with eggs.
When we lived with the Liu family, our staple food was mostly dry cornbread, which was very difficult to swallow.
Now that she cooks for herself, Liu Nanjia made a wild vegetable pancake to balance the rough texture of the mixed flour.
Then I cooked millet porridge, and it was no longer as thin as water; the thick millet porridge was still very delicious.
All three siblings thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
Liu Yanxi praised his sister's cooking skills, saying they had improved even more, and even Liu Sirou, who was sick and had a poor appetite, ate quite a lot.
