I traveled back to ancient times, but I was able to lie down and relax.
Chapter 1 Crossing
"Nan Jia, I know you've been working hard, but this project is very important. The higher-ups are watching closely, so we absolutely can't afford any mistakes. Don't worry, once the project is completed, you'll definitely be rewarded. Just make a few more revisions; the reporting deadline is only a few days away."
After hanging up the phone, Liu Nanjia wanted to curse, "Pah, all talk and no action! Anyone can make empty promises. All you do is talk, give me a raise if you can! Sigh, when will I ever save enough for a house so I can finally retire!"
I glanced at my watch; it was already 9 p.m. I'd lost count of how many versions of the PowerPoint presentation I was preparing for the report.
That's right, Liu Nanjia is a corporate slave, struggling to survive in the big city. Overtime and the 996 work schedule have become the norm. Her days are filled with work, but in the end, she is just working for others, earning a meager salary, and all the money she earns goes into the boss's pocket.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, every industry is saturated. Everyone wants to make money for themselves, but starting a business is no easy task.
Her parents died early, and she has worked hard all her way up. She is working so hard now just to save enough money to buy a house in a beautiful small city and live a life of ease with her savings.
Where to go next? Yunnan? Seems a bit too sunny...
After letting her mind wander for a while, Liu Nanjia sighed and continued with her work.
In the dead of night, the office was brightly lit. Liu Nanjia suddenly felt short of breath, her heart tightened and began to ache, the feeling of suffocation grew stronger and stronger, and her vision began to go black.
My last thought: "Did I just die suddenly? I collapsed in the office. I wonder how much the company will pay me. It should be enough to buy a house, right? Oh well, it'll never be in my hands anyway... I'm so tired..."
"Sister, sister!"
After an unknown amount of time, Liu Nanjia felt someone calling her. "What? I didn't die? I was brought back to life? Was anyone else in the office at the time?"
"Sister, sister!"
This time I could hear it more clearly; the voice was choked with sobs, and it sounded like a little girl's.
As consciousness gradually returned, I wondered, "Who's calling me? Where did this child come from? In the hospital?"
Liu Nanjia felt a sharp pain in her head. When she touched it, it felt wet. She raised her hand to her eyes and tried to open them. Her hand was covered in blood; she was bleeding from her head.
"Sister, you're awake!"
Suddenly, she felt a soft touch on her body. Looking closely, she saw a little girl throwing herself at her. Tears welled up in her big eyes, and her nose was red. It seemed that she was the one who had just called her name.
"Who is this child? I don't recognize him," Liu Nanjia thought to herself.
Upon closer inspection, the little girl appeared to be three or four years old. She was quite cute, with large eyes. Because she had just cried, there were several streaks of dirt on her face, making her look like a little kitten.
His hair was dry and yellow, clearly indicating malnutrition. He was pale and thin, with a pitifully small face that made his eyes appear even larger and somewhat out of place. He wore ill-fitting clothes that were full of patches.
Wait a minute, the style of these clothes is ancient.
"Where am I?"
Liu Nanjia was startled and struggled to sit up, looking around.
I found myself lying on a patch of muddy ground next to a small vegetable garden, surrounded by a ring of stones. One of the stones had bloodstains on it, which was where I got the head injury—I must have bumped into the stone.
There were a few houses not far away, the kind of tiled houses typical of rural areas. They looked somewhat dilapidated, and it seemed to be the backyard of a poor rural family.
Looking again, she saw a woman standing a few steps away, probably in her forties, wearing similarly strange clothes, though slightly better quality, at least without as many patches. The woman looked somewhat guilty, but upon seeing that she was awake, she visibly relaxed, then immediately turned fierce: "What are you crying for? Are you mourning? You're awake now! Shut up!"
"What's all the noise about so early in the morning!"
An old male voice came from the house, followed by several people walking over. The leader was a man who looked quite old, probably over sixty. He was the one who had made the voice.
Then a boy saw the situation and ran over quickly. He looked anxiously at Liu Nanjia's head injury and asked, "Little sister, what happened? You're bleeding from your head." He turned to the old man and said, "Grandpa, my second sister is injured on the head and is bleeding a lot. Let me go and fetch Doctor Li to bandage her up."
When the woman saw that everyone had arrived, she couldn't hide it any longer and hurriedly said, "Father, it's not my fault! I just asked Sirou to water the vegetable garden. She should do some work too. This girl rushed over and made it seem like I was bullying them. Then she fell down on her own. It has nothing to do with me."
The little girl next to her saw that she was the one who had accused the other first, and cried, "Grandpa, no. It was my aunt who wanted to hit me. My sister tried to protect me, but my aunt pushed her away and that's when I fell on the rock. I watered the vegetable garden properly and didn't slack off, boohoo."
Upon hearing this, the boy glared at the woman and said urgently, "Grandpa, hitting your head on a stone is no small matter. What if you damage your brain? Let Doctor Li take a look."
When the woman saw the boy glaring at her, she opened her mouth to curse, but the old man scolded her: "Alright! Stop arguing, what kind of behavior is this?"
He walked over to look at Liu Nanjia and said to the boy, "Since he's awake, it's nothing serious. There's no need to call Doctor Li. Just have your grandmother take care of him."
He paused, seemingly realizing something was amiss, and then said, "Nan Jia is injured, so she doesn't need to work for the next couple of days. She can rest in the house. Old woman, go and bandage Nan Jia's wound. Eldest son, hurry up and cook! Don't tell anyone about what happened today."
After speaking, he glanced around at everyone present, then turned and left.
The boy looked furious, yet dared not disobey; his eyes were red.
An old woman came over, her face showing some heartache. She said helplessly, "Yanxi, your grandfather has already spoken. Help your second sister inside. There are some herbs at home. I'll find them and apply them to her. It will help her recover faster. Sirou, go and fetch some water. I'll wash your second sister."
The little girl wiped away her tears, sighed, and ran off.
Although the boy was unwilling, he had no choice but to help Liu Nanjia into a room.
Then the old woman found a handkerchief, cleaned the wound, and wrapped it with cloth.
Liu Nanjia was wincing in pain, and the people surrounding her breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that her expression was no longer as blank as before.
Next, the little girl brought her food: a bowl of millet porridge that was so thin it was almost watery, a coarse steamed bun, and a little bit of vegetables inside.
Liu Nanjia didn't really want to eat, but the intense hunger forced her to. She slowly gnawed on the chapped steamed bun and continued to sit on the bed in a daze.
After a long while, I finally understood the current situation:
She's traveled through time!
