Chapter 67 The Mayor's Conspiracy
"Okay...okay, this is it, but I don't know how to open it...I only secretly saw the mayor go in..."
After the maid finished speaking, Reed looked at the seemingly ordinary floor beneath his feet.
Reed crouched down, even though the floor looked perfectly normal.
But Red's keen observation still caught a glimpse of something different in the small crack. Red picked up his cleaver and slammed it down on the floor!
"Ahhh!" The maid next to her was startled and turned to run out of the room.
Reed ignored the other person, broke apart some floor tiles, and saw the stairs inside.
The interior was very dark and poorly lit, a stark contrast to the house above.
Reed sheathed his sword, bent down, and walked down. He could only hear the sound of his own footsteps.
Strangely, there seemed to be no sound coming from the basement, which made Reed even more vigilant.
This is because it suggests that the opponent might launch a sneak attack, and we haven't yet figured out their strength.
Reed hadn't walked far when he saw the wooden door in front of him, and he kicked it.
The wooden door was kicked open, and Reed immediately drew his greatsword, slung it over his shoulder, and entered the room.
"What a strange smell..."
Red felt a strange smell as soon as he entered the room, but he couldn't quite describe it.
Reed looked around and found no one.
"Am I being lied to?"
Red's room was large, with a bookshelf full of books on one side, and no other rooms nearby.
Reed planned to check if anyone was hiding inside the bookshelves.
Reed walked in, kicked over a bookshelf, glanced around, and saw no one behind him.
Just as he was about to go look elsewhere, a fallen book landed right at Red's feet.
Red glanced down and saw that the book's icon featured a black crown, and the title was written in exaggerated red font.
Red picked up the book, held it in his hand, and flipped through a few pages at random.
Red glanced at it a few times, then tossed the book aside, mainly because some of the words were hard to read.
But Reed did understand some of it; it seemed to be about the Black Crown of Believers possessing faith, and the more one worshipped the Blood God, the greater the Black Crown's faith value.
Reed didn't understand what this meant, but he still felt very strange.
Why would a town mayor have such a book in his home, and what about this so-called "black crown"?
Isn't this the Black Crown cult that I recently killed? Why would a town mayor have a book like this?
Red glanced at the books on the floor, picked up one with a rather scary-looking cover, and started flipping through it.
The cover of this book features several blood-red, grotesque tentacles.
Reed flipped through it and saw that besides the text, there were also patterns resembling altars and magic circles. This book looked abnormal.
Red believed this, and some of the text in the book has even been depicted in contemporary times.
Reed looked at the circled text, which was all about summoning materials and such—basically, it seemed to be important information.
Red threw the book down and stopped reading.
Knowing these things has nothing to do with me; all I can confirm now is that the mayor seems to be summoning something.
As Reed turned to go back the way he came, he saw the bookshelf he had just overturned, and there seemed to be a hidden door behind it.
Reed tried pushing it with his hand, and sure enough, it opened easily.
Red walked in and saw a dark passage ahead. He looked back at the door lock.
The key was still in the lock; it seems he was in such a hurry or excitement that he forgot to lock the door.
Reed entered the secret passage and saw the stairs leading upwards again.
Reed went up the stairs and found that this time the stairs were unusually long.
Reed quickened his pace, taking three steps in one, then kicked open the door and left.
A cool breeze blew across the sky, accompanied by thunder, and the wind ruffled Reed's hair.
Reed looked around and realized that he had actually reached the roof of the house.
The thunder rumbled incessantly as Reed looked at the figure in front of him.
The figure stood with his hands in his pockets, his blue coat billowing in the wind. Before him was a massive magic circle.
The magic circle was enormous, and it was drawn with fresh blood; strangely, the blood didn't coagulate but appeared remarkably fresh.
The figure seemed to have noticed Reed's arrival and turned to look at him.
Reed also saw what the other person looked like: wearing glasses and an overcoat, frowning as he looked at him.
This man was none other than the town mayor! The mayor rubbed his temples and said, "With so many of us, we still couldn't stop you... You really are a monster."
"You slaughtered all my people. There were many spectators present, but they won't be able to see what's about to happen."
Reed interrupted, "Where did you tie those two up?"
The mayor didn't answer Reed's question. "No need to rush. Instead, I should show you a surprise."
After the mayor finished speaking, he conjured a ball of light in his hand and then tossed it into the center of the magic circle.
With the help of the light, Red looked ahead and was somewhat astonished.
The magic circle was covered with countless black crowns, numbering at least tens of thousands, of varying sizes; even those with trypophobia would vomit at the sight.
The mayor said, "See these black crowns? Now you know who ended up with the black crowns that were taken away."
"That's right, it was me! Hahahaha! You've all been fooled by me! I've never considered myself a good person! And I didn't forge these black crowns back into ore to make weapons!"
"Instead, they will use these 50,000 crowns, representing the faith of believers, to summon the Blood God! An evil god!"
Reed fell silent, then asked, "Why are you telling me all this?"
The mayor waved his hands and said, "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter! I just want you to know the truth! Because with your brain, you still wouldn't understand even after you were killed, right?"
Reed overheard the crucial information: "You've been spying on me?"
The mayor waved his hand. "Spying? That's too harsh! To be precise, it's an investigation! I've been watching you ever since I reported that so-called 'gloating'!"
"I don't know what [schadenfreude] is! But the fact that you could pinpoint the information so accurately proves that you're no ordinary person!"
"Then why didn't I notice?"
The mayor chuckled and mocked Reed, "I merely used some methods belonging to the realm of magic. People without magical power in their bodies wouldn't be able to sense it."
"And what's really strange about you is that your body doesn't possess any magic whatsoever. Even a mentally challenged person who needs help to eat has some kind of magic about them."
"And you're an exception... so can you tell me... [where are you from?]"
[A flash of black light] Reed gripped his greatsword and rushed toward the mayor.
Even the mayor was taken aback by Reed's speed, managing to release the magic that had been gripping the rope in time.
"Boom!" Reed slammed to the brakes, knowing that if he took another step, he would be smashed.
A large cage fell from the sky and landed right in front of Reed.
As the smoke dissipated, Reed sensed danger and jumped back.
Having dodged an attack from a circular saw, Reed looked up ahead.
"[Schadenfreude]? Let's settle this first..."
Before me was a familiar metal box, over two meters tall.
The familiar mechanical legs, the familiar eyelets, and the blinking eyes inside.
However, there were some obviously damaged metal pieces on the metal box that hadn't fully healed, and his circular saw had also disappeared.
Only one circular saw remained...
