Chapter 800, The So-Called Fear of Insufficient Firepower
"We cannot follow American standards, or rather, our standards must be higher than American standards. Only in this way can we cure our fear of insufficient firepower."
When Qin Chuan mentioned this word, everyone present was taken aback, and then they smiled knowingly.
Yes, over the years, we've had a fear of insufficient firepower.
Back then, at Shangganling, U.S. General Van Fleet ordered a relentless bombardment of Shangganling, regardless of ammunition consumption. The 3.7 square kilometer position was hit by two million shells, and the entire hilltop was sheared off by two meters!
Our army has realized the powerful firepower of the world's military powers, and we have no other choice but to use tactical infiltration to get mixed up with the enemy and prevent them from making full use of their artillery advantage.
The fear of insufficient firepower was also deeply imprinted in the minds of the Eastern army. Since they lacked firepower, they should work hard to develop it!
So, when we got to the battlefield with Vietnam, our 152mm howitzers opened fire on Vietnam like crazy. Every time Vietnam fired a shot, dozens or even hundreds of shells would hit them in an instant, eventually silencing the Vietnamese artillery completely.
Is this enough?
Of course not. Our fear of insufficient firepower persists, so we continue to develop artillery, multiple rocket launchers, large-caliber howitzers... on average, one gun per person!
Is that enough? Of course not! Calling in artillery is inconvenient, so operating it yourself is the easiest. As a result, you can often see Eastern troops carrying rocket launchers, which leads foreign troops to be surprised and assume that every soldier has a rocket launcher!
This is absolutely a rumor! One tube per person is not enough. Everyone carries at least two tubes on their backs! The squad leader didn't miss out, the cooks had some, and even the dogs in the cookhouse had some!
The army suffers from insufficient firepower, and so does the air force! In the past, it was because of limited equipment that we couldn't produce that many drones. But later, we even had aircraft carriers for drones, with dozens of drones packed inside. Doesn't that scare you?
What about the navy?
The Navy's 10,000-ton destroyer, Type 055, has 112 launch cells!
Now, it's time to start curing the Navy's fear of insufficient firepower!
"The Americans' vertical launch system has a diameter of 635 millimeters. We can't do that. We definitely have to be bigger than theirs. After all, our missiles have to have more warheads. If they're not bigger than theirs, we can't make up for the lack of accuracy with the power of the warhead."
Needless to say, just take the current HQ-9 as an example, its warhead weighs a full 180 kilograms!
What is this concept?
Air-to-air missiles carried by fighter jets, such as the American Sidewinder, weigh only 85.3 kilograms, while the medium-range Sparrow missile weighs only a little over 200 kilograms!
Regarding ship-to-air missiles, the famous American Standard Missile has a warhead weighing 61 kilograms.
Our missile warhead weighs three times as much as a standard missile of the same class!
The heavier the warhead, the larger the kill radius. The American warheads have an explosion radius of only one or two hundred meters, while ours can reach five hundred meters!
There's nothing I can do; it's just a case of insufficient firepower triggering my fear.
In the conference room, only Qin Chuan was giving a long and detailed presentation, while everyone else listened attentively.
"At the same time, with the need for missile defense in the future, our air defense missiles will need to be larger, which means our vertical launch diameter will have to be designed to be larger," Qin Chuan said. "The Navy will be responsible for mid-course missile defense missions in the future, and how can we do without a missile defense interceptor with a range of thousands of kilometers?"
Everyone's expression turned serious.
For a long time, ballistic missiles were considered uninterceptable, but that was only due to the limitations of the technology at the time. By the time of the Gulf War, Patriot missiles had begun to intercept Scud missiles.
The Scud missile has a range of only 300 kilometers, making it a short-range missile that is easy to intercept. However, with further technological advancements, more advanced medium-range, long-range, and even intercontinental ballistic missiles could be intercepted.
In the 1980s, the United States and the Soviet Union signed an agreement not to develop anti-missile weapons. However, with the end of the Cold War and the United States becoming the sole superpower, it began to seek absolute security and continued to develop anti-missile systems.
Our protests are useless; we must have it ourselves!
We need land-based missile defense systems, and we also need sea-based missile defense systems. The navy's main air defense ships must take on the task of sea-based missile defense!
This means that the launcher needs to be larger; otherwise, a thicker and larger missile cannot be inserted!
"President Qin, even if the diameter is increased to 850 millimeters, I'm afraid it still won't be enough to accommodate the missile's volume!" Engineer Zhu said.
“That’s right. In addition to increasing the diameter, the depth also needs to be increased to nine meters.”
The current launch device for the HQ-9 air defense missile has a diameter of 650 mm and a depth of 7 meters. Now, Qin Chuan has proposed increasing the diameter to 850 mm and the depth to 9 meters, which would allow the missile's size to increase dramatically!
"In this way, in addition to accommodating various air defense missiles in the future, it can also accommodate various anti-ship missiles that we currently have and will use in the future, so that it can be considered a truly universal launch device."
On the Type 052C destroyer, various weapons are placed independently. For example, anti-ship missiles are placed above the helicopter hangar at the rear. Now, if the vertical launch system is effective, all missiles can be crammed into the vertical launch system, making the warship even more streamlined.
The current design is simply a matter of squeezing it in wherever there's a gap.
"President Qin, your suggestion is excellent, but... the technical difficulties are too great!" Engineer Zhu said, "Different missiles are of different thicknesses and lengths, making it difficult to fit them into the same launcher. The fire control interfaces are different, making them incompatible... Moreover, the warships have already been designed, and it's impossible to design these launchers to be of a uniform nine-meter length."
You say nine meters is nine meters? Then how do you dig two meters deeper down there? Especially the side of a warship, which is oriented towards recovery. If you poke downwards, you'll just break through the side!
"Let's talk about the depth first. Not all pits are nine meters deep. Depending on the shape of the warship, we can choose three different depths: 3.3 meters, 7 meters, and 9 meters."
These questions have long been answered by later generations, so Qin Chuan can simply provide the answers directly.
"Among them, those adjacent to the side where the depth is insufficient are made to 3.3 meters, mainly for launching short-range air defense missiles. In this way, the 850 mm crater can hold two missiles or even four missiles, which can greatly improve the firepower density."
"The central pits are mainly seven meters deep, which can meet the needs of most missiles. As for the nine-meter deep ones, only a portion of them need to meet the needs, and they can be used to load heavy missiles."
If all of them were made to be nine meters deep, the warships would probably have to be redesigned. If only a portion of them are made to meet the requirements, it would be easy to achieve!
"In this way, the length and thickness can also be solved. Then we can talk about the launch problem. We can develop the world's most advanced cold and hot launch system, which will greatly improve the versatility of our vertical launch system."
