Chapter 42 Greed and Ignorance

A white figure brushed past her, and Liu Chaoque turned her head sharply, wanting to call out the name she had longed for, but she lost her voice.

“Wang Qige…”

She turned and rushed out, chasing after that familiar figure as she quickly disappeared into the distance.

"Qige! Qige!" Her voice became hoarse with longing, filled with sobs and deep yearning.

Wang Qige didn't turn around. She was like a deaf person who hadn't heard anything. She seemed to have inexhaustible strength and ran wildly ahead. Liu Chaoque almost lost her in a moment of distraction.

She shouted frantically, "Wang Qige, Wang Qige."

The tourists turned their heads and looked at her curiously. "Wang Qige" finally heard this, but as if she had seen a ghost, she ran even faster.

Bang! She bumped into someone, her legs gave way, and she fell to the ground. Before she could even apologize, she dragged her aching knees and chased after the figure that was about to disappear.

Click.

Wang Qige finally stopped, turned her face, and waved to her.

Without the slightest hesitation, Liu Chaoque rushed towards her, wanting to express his longing and ask her to take him home...

The mirror shattered, and she became thousands of her own, each one a reflection of herself, yet none of them truly being her. The light and shadow shifted, but only the gesture of raising her hand remained clearly imprinted in her eyes.

Everything turned dark, except for the light ahead. She stood in a beautiful dream woven from mirrors, where she briefly met her.

"Run!" A buzzing sound filled her ears, forcing Liu Chaoque to wake up from her dream. She saw figures fleeing in all directions and the seawater gradually engulfing her. She stood there blankly, like a rootless duckweed, floating in the sea.

The seawater soaked her trousers, the seawater soaked her clothes, the seawater pressed on her heart, the seawater flooded her mouth.

She stood quietly in the water until the water filling her nostrils competed for her oxygen, until her face turned pale and her breathing became slow.

The seashell necklace around her neck emitted a soft white light, and in the blink of an eye, several fish scales appeared near Liu Chaoque's ears.

"Your Excellency, you can't joke like that," Herring Can scolded in her sweet voice. "Alright, now you're just like a mermaid."

Liu Chaoque closed her eyes. She felt so tired. Maybe she should just lie down and give up.

"Help..." The tourist who couldn't run away was swept here. Before he could utter a second word, the seawater had already taken away his ability to speak.

Liu Chaoque opened her eyes. She was lying on the reef, watching the man who was struggling to swim upwards, his face flushed.

"My Lord, should we go save her?" The herring can transformed into a phantom and swam beside her.

Amazingly, even though Liu Chaoque had never learned to swim, with the herring's buff, she was able to swim forward quickly. She picked up the man whose eyes had rolled back, and the resistance of the seawater made their progress extremely difficult. Fortunately, the man had a strong will to survive and tried his best to cooperate with her movements. In fact, when the man cried for help, he had no hope. After he finished shouting, he only saw a motionless figure on the reef. He was already in despair, but he did not expect that the person was alive and willing to save him.

When they finally got to breathe in some fresh air, the man took deep breaths, while Liu Chaoque observed the surrounding environment; they were only a meter away from the ceiling.

She found a floating package, had the man hold it, and then dived back into the water to search for the next figure.

She was like a real fish, moving swiftly in the water, creating ripples.

Mu Li was on the verge of tears. He was a cat demon, that was true, but he was naturally afraid of water. His favorite food was right next to him, but he didn't want to grab it. He swam towards the surface of the sea in a doggy-paddle manner, hoping no one would see this unseemly scene.

"Mu Li?"

Unfortunately, he happened to stumble upon the most unlucky scene. Liu Chaoque looked at him with a surprised expression, his teeth showing.

If the person he least wants to see sees this, will he be ridiculed for the rest of his life?

Mu Li was alright, and Liu Chaoque breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't mean to make fun of his swimming style; she just couldn't help herself.

You know, I'm not naturally inclined to smile.

The seawater was so cold, and her heart was so cold too. She sank to the bottom of the sea, knowing she was going to die that time anyway.

The eldest brother's every move was just like that of the white shark. He was overjoyed to see her again, expressing his longing for her and recounting the interesting things that happened after he came ashore.

Just as she had expected, he had no shadow. People walked past him without noticing the strange pairing of the big man and the girl. The big man looked fierce, with a large X on his face, like the Great White Shark. His abdomen, which had once been disemboweled, was now covered with stitches, faintly visible on his belly.

She remembered that she actually knew the aftermath of the incident; the crew didn't kill the shark to save her, they saw four fins first.

The fish fins, which could be used to make shark fin soup, spread blood before her eyes, and soon the area around her turned red. A gun barrel was pointed at her, covered in blood. If she hadn't spoken up, she would have been prey too. In international waters, killing is not illegal.

Are they your pets?

“No, they’re my food.” She heard herself say this, picked up the butcher’s knife, swung it at them, and successfully saved her life.

They were dismembered in her hands, turning into plates of bright red raw meat. The fish fins were made into shark fin soup and served on the table. What fresh and chewy seafood!

"Ugh!" Sifeng gagged, the food she had eaten at noon rose up into her throat and was vomited up, becoming extremely fishy and smelly.

The burly man looked at her with concern: "Girl, what's wrong?"

In a daze, the man transformed back into the great white shark swimming in the water.

“I’m sorry…” Wu Sifeng said.

"What do you mean, 'sorry,' girl?" The burly man asked, puzzled. "This isn't your fault..."

“But the one who killed you was also human. I am no different from them.” Wu Sifeng said expressionlessly, “If I hadn’t heard what you said back then, I would have fought with all my might to live. Perhaps then it would have been either you or me who died.”

“But that’s how hunting is. If the prey wants to live, it will attack the hunter. It’s not uncommon for hunters to be killed by their prey when they’re not careful.” The big man was extremely calm. He asked as if he already knew the answer, “I’ll just ask you, if it’s a friendly beluga whale, would you consider taking up arms?”

Wu Sifeng shook her head.

"So you hunt sharks for a living, just for their delicious fins?"

Wu Sifeng shook her head again.

“Girl, you simply chose to save yourself at that time. No one can blame you. Even if we were still alive then, wouldn’t you have been hunted down by those crazed predators if you were standing in front of us? I think it’s certain. But if you had protected yourself first, you might have felt guilty, but your chances of survival would have been much higher. After all, compared to us alien races, they are more tolerant of you, a member of their own race,” the big man concluded.

“But, girl, I feel that some of these people are even worse than us sea creatures. They even sell the organs of their own kind. It must be really tough for you to live in a world like this.” The older brother smiled helplessly.

Sifeng suddenly had a bad feeling. She thought of the stitched line; perhaps it wasn't caused by being cut open, but rather...

"I thought that being reborn as someone at the top of the food chain meant I wouldn't be at risk of being killed. But I was tricked into going to MD, imprisoned, and had my organs harvested. I have all sorts of wounds on my body, and I eventually died from an infection. After I died, I wanted to see my brothers again, but I couldn't float to the bottom of the sea. Somehow, I ended up here."

"My dear sister, neither of my two lives ended well. I only hope that you can live freely. I can feel it too. My time is almost up. I wonder if you would be lucky enough to watch the tuna with me one last time, and see our brothers one last time?"

Wu Sifeng took a deep breath and nodded.

I returned to the White Shark Pavilion once again and brushed past the three of them.

"Isn't this the girl who ran out crying? Girl, are you alright now?" A white shark in the Great White Shark Pavilion, like a happy little dog who had eaten and slept his fill, spoke with a Northeastern accent and grinned at Wu Sifeng.

"This is Erzhuang, but I think calling him Erpang would be more fitting," the burly man introduced.

"Hey, you ghost, who told you to come and talk about me? Girl, don't listen to him, I'm just a normal weight."

"You call that a normal weight? If you were me, you'd have a hard time even catching a fish," the big man laughed.

The two were very familiar with each other and were clearly good friends.

"Hey, Ah Piao, is this the girl you always put in your mouth? She looks pretty young, is she an adult yet?" Erpang asked.

"I'm a college student..."

"Wow!" Erpang jumped back in fright. "You can understand us? Girl, you don't actually see ghosts, do you?"

Sifeng nodded again.

"This is incredible! In novels, it would be called a Pure Yin Holy Body," said Erpang.

“This is called the Sharingan,” the burly man said.

"Actually, this is called opening the third eye," Sifeng said weakly.

They walked through the aquarium, passing through streams of people. If they weren't surprised by the combination of the girl and the big man, even in front of outsiders, she was talking to the big man to herself.

Someone nearby seemed to shout, "Sifeng."

She simply turned a corner and entered a room full of tuna.

"It's really strange." The big man looked at the tuna with pity and said, "Every time I come here, I can't help but sigh. Some people even sell the organs of their own kind, while others can keep such delicious tuna in aquariums and keep them so well."

"What do you think... should we catch one and eat it?" At some point, the big man's eyes turned a deep blue, appearing unusually empty under the dim light of the aquarium.

"How do you want to eat?" Sifeng licked her lips, her expression strangely eerie.

"Isn't there an axe nearby?"

……

"The usable card this time is actually a greedy card?" The man held the card in his hand, which was disguised as a blank card, somewhat puzzled.

The image on the phone froze on the moment Sifeng picked up the hoe.

"The plan can finally proceed normally." He finally breathed a sigh of relief. If Liu Chaoque had looked back, she might have recognized him as the man she had bumped into earlier.

I thought the character selected by the attribute accessory would quickly create chaos, but one was ruined by the black cat, and another didn't have a turtle at home. In the end, it was Liu Chaoque who witnessed the activation of the attribute, and the character became a useless card.

Fortunately, there was a pendant attribute that could only be activated outside, which perfectly offset Liu Chaoque's resistance and allowed the card to be activated smoothly.

It just so happens that she harbors a seed of trouble in her heart, and the aquarium happens to be the source of that seed. She thought it would be a natural outcome, but the source turned out to be benevolent, so she had to take action. She used the Greed, Anger, and Ignorance cards once, taking advantage of the man's desire for food, amplifying his desires, and controlling him.

"So all animals are this focused on food?" the man wondered.

……

When the water in the aquarium reached her shoes and she felt wet, she came to her senses and realized what she had just been doing. The big man had turned into a great white shark, darted into the hole, and swam towards the tuna that were scattering in all directions. Although he couldn't eat them, he was still enjoying himself.

For some reason, she suddenly calmed down. Actually, it was alright. She was going to die, so she wouldn't have to worry about being caught by the police, and she wouldn't have to pay compensation. In her last moments, she could see her old friend hunting one last time.

The seawater engulfed her. Like a drowning fish, she clutched her throat, trying to gasp for air, but all she could inhale was a large amount of seawater that made her nasal cavity uncomfortable. The corrosiveness and suffocating feeling of the water made Wu Sifeng feel like she was about to turn into a salted fish.

Instinctively, she wanted to save herself. She opened her arms and swam upwards. Looking at the shimmering water above, she remembered the days she spent floating on driftwood.

I guess no one will save me this time. Good deeds don't always go unrewarded; she only brings disaster to others.

She closed her eyes; this time, she didn't want to struggle anymore...

"Wu Sifeng... Sifeng?"

Who is calling me? Wu Sifeng was puzzled. The voice was neither male nor female, ethereal like heavenly music, as if it contained a piece of honey, and even the name seemed to have magic.

Wu Sifeng opened her eyes with difficulty, perhaps adding another unforgettable moment to her life.

Her long, pinkish-purple fishtail, her pink fins that draped over her body like a veil, her coral-red hair that resembled seaweed, and her long, blue shell that connected to her belly.

It was completely covered up.

"So mermaids don't just have two seashells to cover their bodies after all," Wu Sifeng thought to herself after being rescued.

The seashells and gems on her tail jingled. Wu Sifeng initially thought they were useless decorations that would only hinder the mermaid and cause her to snag things in the water. That was her thought until she saw a group of people strung on the seashells and gems.

Clutching the gem-shaped buoy, she was being led by the red-haired mermaid out of the aquarium, still unable to accept such a magical thing. Although she had encountered many such things before, she had never seen one that served as a magical artifact.

I guess one is from the animal kingdom and the other is from the magic kingdom.

With such a commotion, even if the aquarium has a lot of water, it would probably run out quickly if released into the city.

But looking at the aquarium staff in diving suits ahead, engrossed in catching fish, she suddenly thought, "Some fish might be more expensive than humans."

Police cars arrived quickly, followed by paramedics who performed first aid while carrying the person inside on a stretcher.

While condemning the aquarium's actions, the police directed people to release the blocked water.

The aquarium staff then realized that if someone died this time, no matter how valuable the fish were, no one would care for them, and they might even face legal trouble. So they fished even more enthusiastically.

Perhaps the obsession hasn't lost its effectiveness.
