Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 538 Livingston's Fall
"Hurry, hurry, hurry..."
"Those behind, follow suit..."
"Don't go the wrong way, follow the footprints ahead, no one will come to save you if you get stuck in the swamp..."
The rain poured down, accompanied by lightning and thunder!
The ground, already muddy, had now turned into a vast expanse of water.
Groups of people, some on horseback and some on foot, were moving slowly through the heavy rain, like a long, winding black serpent!
This is the northernmost point where Andrew and Theolia meet, the infamous Devil's Corridor.
Even when the weather is perfect, this place is often shrouded in mist, and the ground is fraught with danger. If you are not careful, you can fall into the swamp and be unable to get out.
But for Howard France and his Knights, this was the perfect route for a surprise attack.
Many years ago, he had sent people to carefully explore this place and found that the swamp was not impassable. There was a barely passable passage outside those mud pits!
The Sierra Canyon, the largest passage between the two kingdoms, is relatively flat, but it is firmly controlled by Grand Duke Wilson Sidney of the West. Even if the road were to be opened, it would come at a considerable cost.
In contrast, the Devil's Corridor is almost impassable, but that also means that not many people are wary of it. This allows him to take advantage of the situation and establish a logistics base at the northernmost point, preparing for the further unification of Andrew.
Theolia is inherently barren, and even the area around Livingstone in the north is much more fertile than its own territory!
Ironically, simply because this place is shrouded in mist year-round, the despicable Andrew family and their henchmen neglect these areas, allowing them to remain desolate and unnoticed.
To him, this was simply a crime!
"Your Grace, we're moving too fast. Many soldiers have fallen into the swamp, and we've suffered heavy losses. Could you... could you...?"
Amidst the torrential rain, a nobleman clad in knight's armor approached Howard-France, dismounted, knelt on one knee, and reported the current situation.
Looking at Howard's cold expression on his high-class horse, his anxious words became hesitant, and he could no longer utter the words of pleading!
Rainwater streamed down the knight's armor, but Howard's expression remained unchanged. His eyes, hidden beneath his helmet, stared at his kneeling subordinate, revealing a cold and indifferent demeanor.
"Those who fail to arrive by the appointed time shall die..."
After a long pause, he coldly uttered a few words, no longer looking at his subservient subordinate, and turned his head to gaze at the rain curtain to one side!
Behind that curtain of rain lay the place he longed for.
"... ...yes!"
Swallowing hard, the nobleman rose and turned to walk back to his entourage, his vicious curses echoing through the rain.
"Get up, all of you! Speed things up! Anyone who delays me will be hung up and made to howl for three days and three nights..."
Livingstone is known as the northernmost city in the kingdom.
The entire city was built against the mountain, primarily to guard the gap in the Shadow Mountains in the early days of the kingdom.
However, as the entire gap turned into a swamp, becoming the kingdom's infamous Devil's Corridor, the strategic importance of Livingstone plummeted.
The city has a small population and the city walls are in disrepair. The only relatively good thing in the city is the Earl's family castle, which still has some aristocratic grandeur.
"Hey, drunkard, I heard that the Devil's Corridor was haunted again the other day?"
At the dilapidated city gate, two soldiers, dressed in loose-fitting clothes, yawned and sleepy-eyed, chatting casually!
One of the soldiers came over, picked the sleep out of the corner of his eye, and muttered something mysteriously!
Although it's called the city gate, the entire Livingstone city wall is in a state of disrepair, and the moat has long since dried up. So, where is it not allowed to enter?
The only purpose of this place is to tell those lowly farmers that walking on the city wall is illegal, and that if they enter the city without paying taxes, they will be hanged!
The Devil's Corridor might just be a name elsewhere in the kingdom, but in Livingstone, it was a real and terrifying legend.
There are all sorts of stories: some people went in and never came out; some even said that knights on horseback went in and disappeared without a trace!
The other soldier had clearly heard the rumor as well, and nodded repeatedly.
"Yes, yes, someone said they heard strange noises coming from somewhere, like a large group of ghosts were appearing..."
Whoosh... ...puff... ...
Before he could finish speaking, a sharp arrow pierced his throat with a whoosh, stopping him from finishing his ghost story!
Seeing his comrade struggling while clutching his throat, the first soldier was clearly still in shock, looking completely bewildered!
You're just telling a legend, why are you trembling like this?
A moment later, he realized with a start that there seemed to be an arrow stuck in his companion's throat!
He looked up abruptly, and the powerful horses galloping in from afar, along with the fierce riders on them, swept in like a black tidal wave, terrifying him to the point of utter panic!
“Enemy attack… ..”
A piercing scream shattered Livingston's tranquility!
The ground trembled, swords clashed, screams filled the air, corpses littered the ground, houses burned...
Soon, the entire city of Livingstone was engulfed in flames, resembling a living hell.
The common people stared blankly as those knights, like gods of death, poured into the city gates, killing anyone they saw!
The terrified crowd scattered and struggled, but they could not escape the pursuit of these killing gods.
The narrow and long-dried moat became an insurmountable barrier for their escape.
Occasionally, a few knights would appear, but under the charge of a group of enemies on horseback, they would be like withered leaves in a torrent, unable to make a ripple before being submerged, leaving behind a pool of mud.
"What's going on? Can't a person get any sleep?"
Earl Livingstone, still half-asleep, pushed open the bedroom door and came out, his haggard face full of displeasure.
"My lord, my lord, something terrible has happened! Enemies have entered the city and are killing people everywhere!"
The housekeeper, looking flustered, rushed upstairs!
"what?"
Earl Livings picked at his ears, thinking he had misheard!
Are you kidding me? Attacking Livingston?
Which reckless guy is it?
Or did his barons rebel because they were dissatisfied with the new tax rates?
I haven't heard anyone have any major objections.
"Honey, why are you up so early? We..."
"Slap... ...Ah... ..."
A woman emerged from the bedroom, dressed in a thin nightgown, and leaned in with a seductive look, only to be slapped back into the bedroom by Livingston!
She's just a barmaid. We've spoiled her a bit, and she's actually starting to think she's a countess?
Ignoring the barmaids behind him, Livingston shouted at the butler, "Where is my knight? Where is my knight?"
"Make them get out of those damn women's beds..."
