Farming in the Magical World

Chapter 3 A Cute Little Maid

"Phew..."

Back in his study, a little tired, Lanny leaned back in his chair, tilted his head back, and closed his eyes.

This world seemed even poorer than he had imagined; what kind of clothes were his people wearing?

It hardly qualifies as clothing; at most, it's just a burlap sack to put a person inside!

However, it doesn't seem surprising. Even as a lord, he seems to be about the same except for being better dressed.

The nicotine I eat every day makes my throat sore, and it's not even as good as my old life as a loser.

"Knock knock knock..."

There was a knock at the door, and a little girl walked in. It was his personal maid, Candy.

The little maid was wearing a maid dress—yes, a real maid dress, not the cosplay stuff from my previous life. It was much simpler without the lace and frills, and to make it easier to work, only the chest area was white, while the rest was black!

Beneath the maid's skirt was a cute face, only ten years old, with a youthful appearance, big eyes, and a small nose, and a petite height that barely reached Lanny's shoulder!

Those big eyes occasionally flickered with a kind of innocent naivety and... admiration for Lanny.

Lanny herself didn't understand what it was that she admired. Based on what she had learned in the past two months, her predecessor was no good!

"Young master, would you like me to help you wash up?"

Candy's voice was clear and her steps were light as she quietly walked to the desk and looked at him with admiration.

Lanny opened his eyes and noticed that the little maid's face was flushed, and when she felt his gaze, her eyes darted around.

What's going on here?

He didn't think much of it, but just inquired about the situation in the hall, since he had left first and didn't know what happened afterward.

"The villagers have all left. When the bride left, she seemed to realize she had misunderstood you, saying you were a very respectable nobleman, hee hee..."

"Young master, do you not like that bride? Isn't the girl you liked who went to the capital prettier? She's now..."

"What's the capital like? Does the king use golden bowls every day...?"

The little girl became quite excited when these things were mentioned, chattering away nonstop.

It's as if every girl has a hidden gossip streak; they can get excited and discuss a small matter for ages, and even if she's just a little girl, she's no exception.

She glanced at Lanny and saw that the young master had closed his eyes again. She snorted angrily and started shaking Lanny's arm. "Young master, young master, are you even listening to me? If you don't pay attention to me, I won't help you wash up, hmph!"

Hearing this somewhat annoyed voice, Lanny reluctantly sat up. "I'm listening, I'm listening..."

A girl from the capital? The king?

Who knows? He never went to the capital; he went to the predecessor, and he doesn't have that guy's memories!

It wouldn't be difficult to say a few perfunctory words and coax this little maid.

He was a little hesitant to say these things to Frank, who wasn't some country bumpkin who had always stayed in this small rural town; he wasn't so easily fooled.

As far as he knew, Frank had traveled to many places with his grandfather when he was young, and was not just an old housekeeper who stayed in this small rural town all the time.

But this little maid can't read, so she can just let him say what he wants.

"The capital city is so prosperous and beautiful... ...Don't ask anymore, I really can't remember anything else!"

Seeing that she didn't seem willing to give up, he had no choice but to forcibly pull his arm away and stand up. "Alright, alright, help me wash up and change, I'm tired too!"

Seeing the young master's perfunctory attitude, Candy stomped her foot in anger, reluctantly walked behind him, helped him take off his clothes, and took out his pajamas to change into.

The whole washing and grooming thing was a bit of a laughing and crying experience for Lanny.

In his previous life, he lived for over thirty years and never needed anyone's help to dress him after starting kindergarten. But here, he found himself unable to even dress himself.

Every morning, he needs Candy to help him get dressed and wash up, and he also relies on Candy to rest at night. He's practically a giant baby.

At first, he felt quite uncomfortable, as he was embarrassed to be changing clothes in front of a sixteen or seventeen-year-old girl.

I tried to do it myself before, but... I spent two hours and still couldn't figure out how to tie those messy strips of cloth on my body.

In the end, he was defeated under the watchful eyes of the maid, and blushing, he ordered the maid to do it again before he was finally able to put on the aristocratic attire.

Looking at the little maid's expression of wanting to laugh but not daring to, he wished he could find a hole to crawl into.

From then on, he stopped mentioning his clothes. At most, he would try to stay away when Candy helped him change, and he gradually got used to it.

Now he's gotten used to it, even finding it somewhat enjoyable, and occasionally he doesn't forget to make a self-deprecating joke... It's easy to go from frugality to extravagance, but difficult to go from extravagance to frugality.

"This morning, Madam sent someone to Heishan Village to check on the servants and their families. The men in their families have died, so they have no one to hunt and are living in dire straits. We arranged to send some supplies over!"

"The lady said, we can't let everyone starve to death."

"The family's food supplies are running low, and the green husks are almost gone. Occasionally, I hear the lady worrying about it in private. It's said that she's thinking of selling some of her dowry to buy some more food."

"I guess it's because summer is coming soon, and I'm worried that food prices will rise again."

“When the people from Hexi Village came tonight, Madam found out about this. I think she seemed a little angry. Young Master, why don’t you go and comfort her? She is your wife. You can’t keep hiding from her like this.”

"Madam is actually quite concerned about you. She often asks us what the young master is busy with in the study, and whether the hot drink next to him has gone cold. Don't let the young master drink cold water. He has just recovered from his illness, and we don't want him to catch the flu again."

"The lady said... ...the lady said..."

Lenny slapped his forehead and sighed: "Oh no, it's starting again."

This little maid is always like this; whenever she helps him change his clothes, she'll chatter on and on about all sorts of news from the castle and rumors from the village.

But what she liked to talk about most were all sorts of news related to the lady.

It was as if she was the only one in this vast lord's castle who cared about his relationship with his wife; the little maid was extremely worried about their relationship.

At first it was fine, he didn't say much, but lately I don't know why, he's been talking more and more about his wife.

Could it be that this little maid has been bribed by that woman named Tiffany?

Fortunately, she would only nag a few words in my ear and wouldn't force me to do anything.

"I know, I know... You talk so much, be careful you don't become a gossip, then no one will marry you!" Lanny reached out and flicked Candy's small nose, teasing her.

Sure enough, the little maid stopped talking about the madam, wrinkled her nose, and stomped her foot shyly with a blush on her face.

"I'm not getting married. I'll stay in the castle for the rest of my life and serve the young master. If I leave, what will happen to him when he can't even get dressed?"

As he spoke, his voice lowered, as if he were genuinely worried about Lanny's future.

Reaching into the copper basin to wash, Lanny continued to tease the little maid in a muffled voice, "That's easy, huff... huff... huff... ... just let Nina help me get dressed, she's got the skills, so you can go and get married without worry..."

Rolling her eyes, Candy looked down on Nina's service skills. "She's so clumsy, how could she possibly serve the young master well!"

After finally finishing washing up, Candy picked up the copper basin and prepared to leave, but stopped at the door and said with some concern, "Young Master, are you still busy? What's the use of those strange things? They haven't even earned a single gold coin for the family. It's not worth getting tired!"

"Okay, okay, I'm going to sleep right away."

Lanny, who was already slumped over his desk, looked at the blueprints in front of him and waved his hand without even looking up.

Seeing that the young master was engrossed in those things again and ignoring her concern, Candy pouted and stomped her foot angrily again before carrying the basin of water outside.

What does this little girl know? Is she just playing around?

I was recovering from my injury before, and it wasn't very convenient for me to do anything.

Now that I can get out of bed and move around, I should take advantage of the fact that I still remember things and write them down as soon as possible, lest I forget them after too long.

However, parchment was too expensive to waste, and my own memories were scattered and unsystematic, so recording was not smooth, and many things were severely fragmented.

However, there was one thing he remembered quite clearly: gunpowder.

"One part sulfur, two parts saltpeter, three parts charcoal"—anyone who has read the novel or watched the movie knows this mnemonic.

Although the optimal ratio is definitely not this, it can be adjusted gradually once the materials are found. It's not difficult, and there's no complicated process involved.

He even remembered reading in some book that to granulate gunpowder and increase the air gaps for greater power, the method used was to add egg whites, dry them, and shake them through a sieve. However, he had never had the opportunity to try it himself and didn't know if it was true.

He had to write all of this down, just in case he didn't need it later.

Moreover, he didn't think these things were really useless, or that he was doing something pointless.

The area around Castel Ridge is not peaceful. It is adjacent to the Grumman Mountains, and the Grummans in the mountains come down to plunder almost every year. There will always be a time when they are needed.

He pulled another piece of paper from the drawer. He had noticed the grease on his cuffs while washing up and suddenly remembered that he had a bar of soap to clean it up.

Write it down, write it down. It would be troublesome if you really needed to make it one day and found that you had forgotten the recipe.

He moved the candlestick closer to him again, then leaned over the table, picked up a quill pen, dipped it in ink, and began to write again.

The night outside the window is filled with the chirping of insects and the croaking of frogs, quiet and peaceful!

Inside the room, only Lanny's lonely figure remained, hunched over his desk, writing and drawing.
