Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 28 The Strange Granny Mei
Lanny was unaware of Jimmy's expectations, as his daily schedule was quite packed.
After solving the problem of standardizing the process, he returned to his study and began writing his first novel, "The Sword of the Warrior".
As he was engrossed in devising the storyline, he didn't notice Tim tiptoeing into the study.
"Lanny, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
"What's wrong?" Startled, Lanny frantically wiped the ink spilled on the table, giving Tim a disgruntled look.
Could it be that there's another problem with the forging process?
"I've thought about it for a long time, and I'm a little... unsure about how to sell the first batch of longswords. Do you have any suggestions?" Tim hesitated for a long time before finally revealing his purpose, his face already flushed with embarrassment.
He felt uncertain about what he was going to do next and had no idea how to proceed.
Having been amazed by Lanny's pricing strategy for luxury goods, he had developed a strange confidence in Lanny's business acumen, which led him to seek his help.
"They have absolutely no idea, don't they? They're being so tactful," Lanny thought to himself, but he could understand it nonetheless.
Getting Tim to fight is definitely no problem; just think about that bag of broken swords from before.
But asking this knight to do business is probably a bit too much for him.
"Uncle Tim, what do you think of calling our new longsword the Dragon Pattern Sword?"
He felt that in order to sell these things, he had to first come up with a catchy name, which was a good start.
Dragon Pattern Sword was a name he thought was very good; it sounded high-class and could easily distinguish it from ordinary knight's sword.
In fact, he also came up with several other names, such as Steel Sword, Holy Sword, Hundred-Refined Sword, and Warrior's Sword, but he rejected most of them directly.
Calling it a steel sword is too ordinary and lacks any class, which is very detrimental to its promotion.
Calling it the Holy Sword is a good idea, but it's somewhat taboo with the Nicholas Kingdom to the south, so he naturally ruled it out immediately, fearing it would bring trouble upon himself.
The name "Hundred Refinement Sword" immediately suggests that the sword was forged through repeated hammering, which would be far too easy to expose the secrets of its forging. No way!
The reason for not using the name "Sword of the Brave" is mainly because "Sword of the Brave" is not well-known yet and has no reputation at all, so it would be better to call it "Super Knight Sword".
After considering all the options, he ultimately decided that the Dragon Pattern Sword sounded the best.
"Dragon Pattern Sword? Don't you think that sounds weird?" The knight repeated the name, completely bewildered, unable to understand why he would choose such a name.
Only after hearing the other person pronounce the name did Lanny realize that he had been using his native language from another world to address the person, and hadn't noticed how obvious the name was in this world.
If spoken in his native language in another world, the name would indeed sound very powerful and pleasant. But the problem is that Andrewan is closer to Old Western languages, and if spoken in the local language, it would sound like "a sword on a dragon's scales," which is very strange.
Sighing, Lanny felt a little disappointed that such a nice-sounding name couldn't be used. He rubbed his forehead, racking his brains, and prepared to try again.
"Then---the Dark Pattern Sword?"
Following the naming logic of the Dragon Pattern Sword, he quickly came up with another name, but this time, he pronounced it aloud.
After reading it aloud and reflecting on it, he found it to be quite good, conveying both the image of a sword in the darkness and the meaning of a longsword adorned with mysterious patterns.
In Andrew's language, "dark" inherently carries the meaning of mystery and gloom.
"Hmm, not bad," Tim thought for a moment and nodded, giving a pretty good evaluation.
Ultimately, the two agreed to use the name "Dark Pattern Sword," which distinguished it from traditional longswords and also sounded very nice.
Once the name was decided, Lanny then brought up his plans for selling the Dark Pattern Sword.
While sales may seem difficult, they are actually quite simple, especially in an era when goods are scarce and people's horizons are limited.
Since the greatest advantages of the Dark Pattern Sword are its sharpness and hardness, Tim only needs to highlight these points in his sales pitch.
“Then you’ll do this… and then this…” Lenny moved his chair closer to Tim and lowered his voice.
At first, the knight looked resistant and tried to interrupt Lanny several times, but Lanny did not give him the chance and quickly finished explaining his thoughts.
After hearing Lanny's idea, Tim's resistant expression changed, and he seemed to have suddenly seen the light, his eyes even lighting up.
He felt that this method was perfect for him, requiring little effort and no need to go to the market town to hawk his wares.
As for the outcome, he felt he should trust Lenny. At least, it wouldn't be worse than he had imagined, would it?
"Okay, I'll do as you say. How long will it take you to get everything ready?"
“We can’t delay any longer. We must assemble the Cavaliers as soon as possible. I’m worried that the Grummans are coming soon.”
Tim's face was full of worry when he talked about the Grummans.
Earl Enno is practically a laughingstock in the North now. A count who mobilized several nobles under his command couldn't even subdue a group of fifty or sixty Grumman bandits. No wonder people are mocking him.
Seeing the knight's worried expression, Lanny silently calculated the time before giving a three-day timeframe.
"Okay, I'll wait for your news!"
Watching Tim leave with satisfaction, Lanny felt a headache coming on.
His headache wasn't about the forging process; Iron Hammer was already very familiar with the procedure, and the forging part was almost finished.
The problem lies in the manufacture of scabbards and accessories.
The scabbard is simple; it can be made directly from wood. He has already arranged for Jimmy to start working on it. Now, the people pulling the bellows for Iron Hammer have been replaced by the coachmen from Joseph's castle, but the progress is not ideal.
The main problem is that Jimmy isn't very familiar with some of the precision machining tools that Lanny designed for him, such as the plane. He just can't seem to get the hang of it and keeps getting stuck.
Lenny taught him several times, but there was little progress. Lenny even began to wonder if this thing had some kind of innate talent. He himself hadn't learned it back then, but he could learn it just by watching. Why was Jimmy having such a hard time?
But what troubled him even more was the accessories on the outside of the scabbard.
He had intended to use deer hide for the scabbard and tassels, as well as the non-slip grip on the hilt. After all, this place was near the mountains, and there were plenty of deer; in Black Mountain Village within his territory, some people even made a living selling them, and they were really cheap.
But a problem arose with the sewing work. The key issue was that he didn't know the craft and couldn't think of any good solutions, so he could only worry anxiously.
The sewing work in the castle was mainly handled by the maid Melinda. In addition to sewing, she was also responsible for some cleaning and tidying work. She was not a professional tailor.
Not being a professional tailor, with limited skills and slow movements, the speed was quite touching.
So far, not even the decorative parts of a single patterned sword have been finished, which is making Lanny very anxious and frustrated.
Just as Lanny was thinking about whether to go to Elfen to find a professional leather craftsman, his thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Young Master, Granny Mei has arrived." It was the old butler, Frank, who entered the study. As always, he was extremely efficient, bringing Granny Mei from Black Mountain Village.
As Frank finished speaking, an old woman walked in from behind him, her back hunched, and looked at him calmly.
The old woman appeared to be around sixty years old, with a face full of wrinkles and a head of slightly disheveled white hair, making her look very old.
Ok?
When Granny Mei looked at him like that, Lanny felt a sense of unease, but for a moment he couldn't quite figure out where the feeling came from.
After carefully observing the old woman again, he quickly discovered the source of this sense of incongruity.
Since entering with the steward, this man had not uttered a single word. Unlike other commoners who would be trembling with fear and panic upon seeing their lord, he remained remarkably calm when bowing.
What Lanny found most jarring were those bright eyes.
Most elderly people have somewhat dull eyes, but Granny Mei's eyes were quite different. They were very clear and bright, and very lively, even darting around as she secretly surveyed her study.
It seemed that in this person's eyes, curiosity about this study far outweighed curiosity about Lord Lanny.
Could this look be due to makeup?
Is it really that exaggerated? This isn't some other world with four great evil spells, but the Kingdom of Andrew where most commoners can't even get enough to eat.
Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the skin color was natural, the hands and feet were dry, and even the teeth were yellow and black, making it impossible to see any trace of makeup.
In the end, he still couldn't tell whether she was wearing makeup or not.
Fortunately, he wasn't hiring any security forces; he was just a craftsman, so there was no need to be so serious about it.
"You're Granny Mei?"
Suppressing his unease, he didn't let the butler leave, but instead started talking to Granny Mei directly.
Upon hearing his question, Granny Mei turned her gaze away from the study and looked at Lanny. "Yes, sir."
"Huh, they actually called me 'sir' instead of 'noble lord' or 'lord'?" Lanny raised an eyebrow upon hearing the other party's reply.
"Can you tell me your name? I always feel that Granny Mei... doesn't sound like a real name." She gestured for the other person to sit opposite her while asking about her name.
Granny Mei didn't react much to Lanny's words. She walked to the opposite side of the desk with her head down and sat down, tidying her hair and speaking in a low, hoarse voice.
"If you find it inconvenient, you can call me Aunt Mei. I no longer wish to mention my name after the passing of my husband and son. I hope you won't make things too difficult for this old woman."
Although she spoke of human tragedy, her tone was devoid of any sadness, as if she were talking about someone else's affairs.
But Lanny had a vague feeling that she was constantly reinforcing her persona, making people think of her tragic past whenever they thought of her.
This is very similar to some marketing ads that Lanny saw in another world; it seems that this is the usual formula.
As Lanny stared at the woman, he had a strange feeling. If it was just the strange language at first, as she got closer and he looked more closely, he discovered something even stranger.
In the short time she was inside, she fixed her hair four times. Judging from the way she did it, she must care a lot about her hair.
Thinking about it now, the messy hair I had when I came in seemed more like it was deliberately disheveled.
As she unconsciously tidied her hair, Lanny made an even more astonishing discovery: the woman's hair roots were black, instead of turning white from the roots like those of an elderly person.
Could it be that this woman used some method to deliberately dye her hair white?
Then what about the wrinkles on her face? What about her hunched body? Which one is real?
Looking at Granny Mei's various strange behaviors, Lanny had countless questions in her mind.
"Frank, you can go ahead and get busy!"
After the butler left, Lanny scrutinized Granny Mei for quite some time, but in the end he decided to pretend he didn't know anything.
Granny Mei came to Heishan Village more than ten years ago. Even if she has a complicated background, she shouldn't be targeting me. I don't know the specific reason yet, but it shouldn't have much to do with me.
Moreover, he only wanted to study whether he could make straw paper or bark paper. Her affairs were none of his business, and as long as they didn't affect him, he couldn't be bothered to care.
"Cough cough cough... Mei... Whether your name is really Granny Mei or something else, I don't really care."
Lanny first subtly indicated her indifference to the other woman's past before formally stating her needs to the strange old woman, Mei.
"Could you tell me how you make parchment? If so, I'll offer you a job, and you can get a job at the castle in return. How about it?"
