Farming in the Magical World
Chapter 190 Siblings Blushing
Today, everyone in the workshop discovered it!
Supervisor Cody was in a bad mood today; he was absent-minded at work and seemed preoccupied!
When he got home from get off work last night, he opened the door and found Cora, who had moved in with Jimmy, at home. Cora was smiling at him, and dinner was already laid out on the table!
Cora had obviously been there for a while and was very familiar with the couple's original home. She not only baked fragrant bread and made a pot of delicious chickpea soup, but also pan-fried a piece of salmon that was golden brown on both sides!
"Sister, is this a holiday? Why is it so lavish?"
Cody took off his coat, but felt a little strange, as he didn't remember any holiday today!
Now that Cody has become the workshop manager, his income is actually quite good. In addition, his brother-in-law Jimmy's income is also not low, so the two siblings have been living quite well these past few months!
But it's obviously impossible to eat like this every day, no matter how rich you are, you can't afford to waste so much money. Besides, my sister is not a wasteful person.
In previous years, the two siblings lived a hard life. At that time, the previous brother-in-law was still alive, but he was of no use. He was just an honest and simple commoner who knew nothing but farming, and the family was very poor.
Even though he usually added a lot of tree bark and grass roots to the hard green lees, and his sister would take him up the mountain to collect wild vegetables from time to time, he still couldn't get enough to eat and would go hungry when food was scarce!
This made him even more puzzled!
Could it be that today is the old king's birthday? Why didn't anyone mention it in the workshop?
"Hehe, you're back!" Cora stood up with a smile, naturally took Cody's coat and hung it on the wall, then thoughtfully placed the cutlery opposite her before sitting down. "Eat first, we'll talk after we eat!"
"Where's brother-in-law?" Cody picked up a spoon, took a sip, and gave Cora a thumbs up. "It's all thanks to your cooking, sister. This soup is delicious. Jimmy really hit the jackpot!"
"Hehe, he's probably home by now. He wasn't back when I came out!" Cora chuckled, cutting off a piece of salmon and handing it to him. "Has the workshop been busy lately? You must be exhausted?"
"It's alright..." Cody was indeed a bit hungry. He took a few big bites of bread to fill his stomach, then carefully took a bite of salmon, closed his eyes and savored the delicious taste. Only then did he feel much better.
"Sister, just tell me, what do you want? Do you need to borrow money? You know where I am, just take it yourself!"
Cody let out a long sigh and spat out a fish bone that hadn't been properly cleaned. He felt a pang of emotion, thinking that he needed to find a wife. The house was always so quiet and empty when he came home; he needed a woman to make it feel better!
He was only sixteen or seventeen years old, but according to the average lifespan in this world, he was not considered to be getting married early, or even late. In previous years, his older sister had been taking care of him, and the family didn't have much money, so he hadn't even considered getting married, and that's how it was delayed!
"Not exactly," Cora shook her head, seemingly wanting to say something but stopping herself.
Seeing his sister's troubled expression, Cody had a sudden thought: "Am I going to be an uncle?"
"What are you saying, you little rascal... ...Are you looking for a beating?!" Cora slapped Cody's head, both amused and exasperated.
"Brother, I heard that Master Lanny asked you to arrange an apprenticeship for that old book engraver. Is that true?" Cora hesitated for a long time before finally saying this.
"You heard it from your brother-in-law?" Cody frowned, his voice turning cold. There weren't many people present at the time, and only a handful of people heard the news. Jimmy, her brother-in-law, was the most likely person to have told her sister.
But he didn't understand. Besides his distant cousin Colin, did his sister have anyone else in the village who could recommend her? He had already planned to recommend Colin anyway, so why did his sister need to make a special trip to say it?
What does the master require? Reliability!
For him, who could be more reliable than Colin?
What's more, Colin is naturally skilled with his hands. In the past, when the villagers' furniture broke, they would ask Jimmy for help, but ever since Jimmy went to work for the lord, everyone started asking Colin for help!
Although Colin used an axe and old George used a carving knife, old George was also a carpenter and he was just as good with an axe. Was there any difference?
Cora clearly didn't want to lie to her younger brother, with whom she had relied on each other for many years. She nodded slightly and continued, "Your brother-in-law said that this apprenticeship is a little different, and the master is taking it very seriously, is that right?"
“That’s right,” Cody nodded, then looked at his sister. “You want to recommend Colin? Sure, that’s what I was going to recommend anyway!”
“Colin? He’s doing some carpentry work for the villagers now, and he’s still making a living. There’s no need to worry…” Even though Cody didn’t look at his sister, he could hear the difficulty in her voice.
But what does this statement mean? Isn't it an attempt to recommend Colin?
He sighed inwardly. This older sister finally had her own little family, and the days when the two siblings lived together were over. She also had her own little plans!
Although he knew this was inevitable, Cody felt uneasy and couldn't quite put his finger on what he was feeling!
Seemingly sensing her brother's sentiments, Cora gently patted Cody's head. "Honey, I'm very happy now, and Jimmy is very good to me too. Are you happy for me?"
"Hmph, he wouldn't dare... I'm in charge of him now!" Cody snorted, rolled up his sleeves, and looked ready to fight at the slightest provocation—in front of his sister, he was always a mischievous little monkey, so there was no need for him to put on airs!
"Haha, I know you love your sister!" Cora laughed happily when she saw her brother's familiar face again.
"Alright, alright, Jimmy meant to recommend his cousin, who's also sixteen this year, just right!"
After a long pause, she patted Cody again and changed the subject to get down to business!
Now that things were out in the open, she stopped hiding anything. Being a straightforward person, she had been holding it in for a long time.
“But… Master wants someone to learn carving, can someone like Reed do it?” Cody hesitated.
He naturally knew his cousin Jimmy; they were from the same village, so how could he not know him?
Putting everything else aside, this guy is exactly like the second Black Tiger, but he just doesn't have Black Tiger's guts. Back then, when the master recruited guards, he avoided going because he was afraid of the pain. Would the master agree to introduce someone like this?
Uh... Cora choked for a moment. She knew the suggestion was a bit far-fetched, but since Jimmy had brought it up, she knew she had to give it a try, otherwise Jimmy might have some ideas about her.
When Jimmy first approached Cora, Cora was clearly in a dominant position. She was a cheerful person and didn't look down on Jimmy for his malnourished appearance. It's possible that she had the idea of getting Jimmy to help raise her younger brother, which was a realistic consideration that she was aware of herself.
As her brother's status rose further, Cora, as the older sister, naturally became more assertive. However, Cora was a smart woman and knew that at this point, she should be more accommodating to Jimmy, as long as she wanted to continue living with him.
Otherwise, these small cracks will accumulate in life and eventually cause big problems.
That's why she still came to Cody even though she wasn't very optimistic about the chances.
However, this put her younger brother in a difficult position. Seeing Cody frown, Cora felt guilty, but what could she do?
She knew she was in trouble the moment Jimmy opened his mouth, but she agreed without hesitation, precisely because she had no other choice!
“Look, Colin still has work to do, while Reed is starving. It’s just a matter of a word from you. Anyway, as long as Reed studies more, he’ll eventually learn!” Cora continued to persuade him.
Cody glanced at his sister and sighed inwardly—Sister, you have no idea, what the master values most is reliability!
But he couldn't say it outright, so he could only shake his head stiffly and say, "Sister, no way!"
"You..." Seeing that her brother didn't even offer an explanation, only a curt refusal, Cora's temper flared up. She slammed her hand on the table and stood up. "Cody, if you still consider me your sister, you'll listen to me and recommend Reed, ah..."
After saying that, Cora turned around, slammed open the door, and stormed out of the house!
Watching her sister's retreating figure, Cody's face flushed red, her lips pressed tightly together, a mixture of anger and resentment...
In the end, Cody couldn't go against his sister's wishes, but he didn't listen to her completely either. He simply called Reed and Colin over and brought them to Lanny's side.
"Sir, these two are the apprentices of old Mr. George that I wanted to recommend!"
"This is Colin, he's seventeen years old. He occasionally does carpentry work for the villagers, and he's fairly reliable! Yes, he's my sister's and my cousin!"
"That's Reed over there, he's also seventeen years old, strong and hardworking! He's Jimmy's cousin!"
"Come up here and greet the lord!" Cody beckoned to the two men.
As Cody said, both of them looked like teenagers, but Reed was quite strong!
After glancing at the two men and then at Cody, Lenny's gaze was scrutinizing, but his mind was already racing with thoughts!
If he had just arrived, he would probably be furious by now—"I asked you to introduce me to someone reliable, and you brought back two cousins? Are you addicted to using connections?"
But now, after living as a lord for a while, he doesn't feel much about it anymore. What he wants is reliability, and a cousin is good, but a younger brother would be even better!
Instead, he was focused on Cody's introduction, and after thinking about it carefully, he found it quite interesting!
In the past, he probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference, but now he could hear it very clearly; Cody's explanation had already made everything clear!
What interested him was, since Cody had already decided on the candidate, how did Reed, who was just there to make up the numbers, come about?
Was Cody forced into this situation, or did he do it intentionally?
After thinking for a long time without any results, and realizing that he wouldn't be able to figure it out without further explanation, Lanny was too lazy to continue racking his brains and simply did as Colin wanted!
Even if Cody was forced into it, he didn't care. Cody had already laid everything out and hadn't intended to hide anything. Couldn't he bear this small responsibility?
