Farming in the Magical World

Chapter 136 The Vanished Wright

"What's hindering the movement? No, no, no, it's not some god doing that..."

When Lanny actually started trying to teach Cody some basic physics, he discovered that it was much more difficult than he had imagined.

This is mainly because Cody's basic knowledge is severely lacking; he can't even read many words, making it difficult for him to understand how the world works, let alone the laws derived from physical phenomena and the methods for calculating forces.

Moreover, there is a big problem here, which is the units, such as units of length, units of weight, and so on.

This world has not yet developed industrialization, so there is a severe lack of unified units, and kingdoms or the entire continent have little interest in unifying these units.

When he was receiving compulsory education, he couldn't understand why history books placed such importance on the standardization of weights and measures and gave it such high praise.

But when he actually prepared and communicated these things, he deeply realized how important it was to unify units of measurement, and understood how great the person who standardized weights and measures was, truly deserving of the title of one of the greatest emperors of all time.

In an era where length units were primarily based on comparisons and time units on light, Lanny, wanting to explain these concepts, could only awkwardly translate some units into the language of this world. This resulted in many unit names sounding inexplicable, and many technical terms being even stranger, leaving Cody completely bewildered.

Fortunately, he was young and quick-witted, and had done some technical work at the castle for a while, so he had some practical experience, which allowed Lanny's popularization work to proceed with difficulty.

Even so, he found that if he were to teach solely through this dialogue method, the progress would be incredibly slow and completely lacked any systematic approach.

Ultimately, having no other choice, he opted to do this work in writing.

Three days later, Lanny found Cody, who was directing people to make sand molds in the workshop, through a small booklet bound in parchment.

The booklet contained some basic physics knowledge that Lanny could recall. He had forgotten most of the physics he learned in junior high school, so he pieced together some information and added some basic concepts to manage to put together about ten sheets of parchment. He really couldn't do any more than that.

"Take a look at this first, and come back to me if you don't understand anything." He beckoned Cody over and handed him the booklet.

Cody's expression was strange. He was stunned at first, but after understanding what Lanny said, he stretched out his hands with a sacred expression, as if he were receiving an extremely sacred relic, which left Lanny stunned as well.

Jimmy, who happened to be busy in the workshop, looked at the booklet in Cody's hand with envy, his eyes even reddening.

Lanny gave Hammer a standard process flow, and the two of them secretly called the booklet "The Forging Manual." Hammer immediately took it home and hid it away, saying he would keep it as a family heirloom, which made Jimmy extremely envious.

Now Cody received an even thicker portion, and judging from his expression, it was something good. But he didn't get any of either of them, so Jimmy could only look at Lenny pitifully.

When he first saw Iron Hammer's things, he thought he should ask the master for a copy of the manual, but he still didn't have the courage to ask Lanny. Today, after being provoked like this, he finally couldn't hold back anymore.

"Sir, could you... get me a carpentry manual?" Jimmy mustered his courage and approached Lanny hesitantly.

"What carpentry manual? What is that?" Lanny, who was about to leave, looked at Jimmy's aggrieved expression with a blank look on his face.

"Yeah, sir, the kind of thing you gave Hammer and Cody, I...I...I want a copy too." Jimmy lowered his head, constantly fidgeting with his clothes. It was clear he'd mustered a lot of courage, and he said pitifully, "They all have them..."

Lanny was even more confused. What he had given Hammer was a process standard, which was now almost useless. What he had given Cody was some basic physics knowledge, which had nothing to do with carpentry. Even if he gave it to you, you probably wouldn't understand it.

These aren't anything particularly precious, why are you so upset?

But looking at the aggrieved Jimmy, he couldn't bring himself to scold him. After all, he was the only one left among the old folks in the workshop, so it seemed understandable that he felt a little wronged.

But what should I draw in this booklet? I can't exactly draw the methods for making 108 kinds of furniture, can I?

I don't remember many furniture styles myself.

He slapped his forehead in frustration. "Don't worry, let me think about what would be suitable for you... sigh..."

He felt he might have gotten himself into trouble again, a very troublesome... thing!

Upon hearing that the master had finally agreed to make a separate copy for him, Jimmy's previously aggrieved expression immediately brightened, and he repeatedly bowed and thanked him, "Thank you, sir! Thank you, sir!"

Lanny glanced at the beaming Jimmy and pointed a finger at him. "You, you've found me a good job. Remember to get the camp up and running quickly, you hear me?"

"Don't worry, we've gained some experience now, so we're pretty fast." Despite being scolded by the master, Jimmy didn't seem worried at all; in fact, he was beaming with joy, which annoyed Lanny even more.

"By the way, how are those prisoners doing?" Lanny suddenly remembered that the prisoners had been assigned to Jimmy's side to help with the labor.

When Lenny brought up serious matters, Jimmy, knowing the gravity of the situation, immediately dropped his smile and replied seriously, "Everyone's doing alright, they're all working quite hard. It's just that new guy, Wright, he's always trying to slack off!"

There are currently three prisoners working for Jimmy: Nechka and Sancherov, who were captured during the defense of the castle, and Wright, the invader who was recently captured.

Nechka and Sancherov were both relatively honest. For the people of the Grumman Mountains, losing a battle and being captured by the enemy was nothing unusual. Not being beheaded by the enemy was already extremely lucky, so they naturally wouldn't have any extra thoughts.

Moreover, since Lanny had specifically instructed them not to scold or beat them as long as they didn't make mistakes, and their food was guaranteed, the two of them were actually quite happy and didn't want to leave. They obediently followed orders every day and didn't slack off much, looking like they were settling down in the castle.

The newcomer, Wright, was a different story. He was unruly and disobedient, and he would slack off whenever possible. Instead, he often complained about the poor food and accommodations. Tim wouldn't let him use the whip, which gave Jimmy a headache.

"Wright didn't try to escape?" Lanny was a little curious, wondering why this guy was so honest. As for Jimmy's laziness and complaints, he didn't care too much. After all, he used to be a nobleman, but now he's a prisoner. Can't he even complain a little?

"How could that be? He can't escape." Jimmy shook his head dismissively. "They're staying in the new camp, with so many guards watching over them. How could he possibly run away?"

"Sir, why does Lord Tim value Wright so much?" Jimmy glanced around, then lowered his voice and leaned closer, looking curious. "Not only are we not allowed to fight, but we're not even allowed to say a few words of abuse. Could it be that Lord Tim hasn't married because...?"

Hearing Jimmy's outrageous guess, Lanny was both amused and exasperated. He wondered what Tim would think if he knew such a conjecture.

Haha, that's funny!

To preserve some of the aristocratic dignity, those who knew Wright's identity did not tell their subordinates. Jimmy, of course, had no idea that the prisoner working under him every day was actually a nobleman.

"Alright, alright, stop asking around. It's not what you're thinking. I'm not telling you for your own good!" Lanny glared at him irritably and turned to go back to the study.

"Fine, don't tell me then!" Jimmy didn't dare complain in front of Lanny. He only muttered to himself after Lanny's figure disappeared at the workshop entrance.

With one hand stroking his chin, Jimmy looked thoughtful. "Since this guy has nothing to do with Tim, then who exactly is he?"

Jimmy is curious about Wright's identity, while back in the hotel in Elfen, someone is inquiring about Wright's whereabouts.

"Damn it, did Lai take the deposit and run away?" Fern Carter held up his glass, but had no appetite for drinking; he just felt incredibly annoyed.

The treatment I received this time in the North with Wright was completely different from the last time I came with Geno.

The last time he accompanied the young master on his travels, although he was just an attendant, he stayed in hotels and ate meals that followed the young master. He ate and drank well, stayed in nice accommodations, and was even flattered by some minor nobles from time to time. So he didn't have a bad time at all.

But this time, since I was nominally just a liaison and everything was subject to Wright's approval, my treatment was naturally much worse than before.

These things are nothing, he's not someone who can't endure hardship. When he completed the Knight's Travel mission, didn't he travel alone for more than a year, enduring wind and rain?

What he couldn't stand the most was that Wright was simply unreliable.

On his very first day in Elfen, he abandoned himself to find women, ostensibly to experience the tenderness of Northern women. And once he left, he was never heard from again, disappearing for several days.

If I hadn't been in such a hurry that I followed his trail and caught him in some woman's bed, he probably would have completely forgotten about the important matter.

That was bad enough, but what he didn't expect was that after refusing his request to follow him, the guy went to Castor alone and then disappeared again.

The agreed time had already passed, but the other party hadn't sent any message, making him even suspect that they had run away with the money.

Before leaving, the two made some agreements. If he were to be captured by accident, he would lie and say that he was a minor nobleman in the capital and that he was his follower, and that he would use the money to ransom him.

Although Wright had said at the time that this was a last resort and he would not do it unless absolutely necessary, and he also said with great disdain that he had been in the capital for many years, climbed into the Duke's room and crawled into the Earl's bed, and had never had any problems, he did not think that he would make a mistake in Caster Ridge.

Although he found the guy's boasting annoying, he still believed him to some extent.

Having traveled together to the North and stayed by his side for many days, he had already learned of the identity of this dark mage, Wright.

But what's going on now? Why haven't we heard from them since they left?

It's no wonder he maliciously speculated that Wright had run away with the money; he simply couldn't imagine what kind of problems the other party could have caused.

He actually had two missions in the North. First, he was to accompany and monitor Wright's actions. Second, after Wright succeeded, he would go to Lanny's place to retrieve the Dark Pattern Sword that Young Master Gino had ordered.

If the other party can produce it, fine. But if they can't, he will naturally reveal his identity and file a complaint with the Grand Duke of the North. So what if Lanny is the Earl's son-in-law? He is also backed by a Grand Duke, and he has a contract in hand.

According to the contract at the time, if Lanny failed to deliver the goods on time, he would have to pay ten times the order price as compensation. I don't believe the Wells family wouldn't go bankrupt.

According to Butler Randall, the possibility of the Wells family manufacturing the Dark Pattern Sword again must be completely eliminated. It would be best to strip them of their noble titles and then find an opportunity... well, to prevent future troubles.

But all these plans were stuck at the first step. As the agreed time passed day by day, and the delivery date agreed upon with the Wells family drew closer and closer, he became more and more anxious.

Could it be that this guy has already returned and is hiding in some tavern looking for women?

Thinking of this possibility, he could no longer sit still. He got up and prepared to go out and search. Anyway, Elfen wasn't very big, and there were only a few taverns with similar services. He could just go and search them one by one.

"Sir, are you going out?"

As soon as he stepped out of the room, a waiter greeted him warmly.

Fern wasn't in the mood for small talk, so he casually waved and stepped out of the hotel.

Ultimately, Fern did not find any trace of Wright in Elfen, even after searching every tavern and inn in town and even asking several prostitutes who frequented the taverns for information, but to no avail.

Only then did he have to face the fact that Wright had truly disappeared. And only then did he have to start considering whether Wright had really taken the money and run away, or whether he had been caught by the minor nobleman, Lanny.

Do we really have to make a direct trip to Castel Ridge?

Sitting in his hotel room, Fern rubbed his forehead in distress, unable to make a decision.

If I went to Castor now, what would I say to Lanny? I couldn't just ask him if he knew a magician named Wright, could I?

For Fern, a knight by birth, this was definitely not his forte. He had no problem wielding a sword to kill someone, but dealing with these kinds of situations was far more difficult for him than killing anyone!

After much deliberation, he finally decided to make a trip to Castel Ridge. Even if Wright had secretly run away, he couldn't explain himself to Young Master Gino if he didn't investigate.
