Chapter 5 Dogs

Listening to the soldier's retelling, Wutong felt dizzy and her heart ached as if it were about to explode.

She was too slow! She failed to save Abdo! She betrayed Commander Li's trust!

How could she possibly face Commandant Li?

Clutching Nanxing's clothes tightly, she took several deep breaths, feeling like her lungs were about to burst, before finally bursting into tears.

At the same time, something strange happened in Dagua Town; several cannon shots rang out.

Everyone looked up and saw a long pole slowly being erected on the city wall of Dagua Town.

On the long pole, the flag of Dong Qi fluttered in the wind, like an invader proclaiming his victory.

Their only hope was shattered, and the thousand people were speechless.

Wutong struggled to her feet, her back swaying unsteadily.

Nanxing tried to help her up, but she pushed him away.

She looked around and murmured, "Enemy countries have attacked, so why is there no movement from the imperial court and the southern border? Have these people been abandoned long ago?"

She always thought everyone was stationed here with honor, but in the end, they were just discarded pawns.

The wind blew her hat off, and her messy short hair danced in the air, making her look very sad.

Nanxing's lips moved, but she couldn't utter a single word of comfort. In the end, she clenched her fists tightly and lowered her head with a restrained expression.

The soldier spoke again.

"Lord Wutong, now that the army is gone, we either wait to die or have to return to the southern border. Please, have mercy and let me go home. I have elderly parents and young children to support. It seems we can't fight this war anymore. Please let me go back to farming."

His comrades all died, but he survived and escaped the battlefield.

In a strictly disciplined military, such a person would absolutely be considered a deserter and beheaded on the spot.

Wutong, however, could understand him quite well. Not everyone wants to be a hero. For him, fighting on the battlefield might not be as pleasant as farming in the countryside.

He delivered the message to everyone, which can be considered as fulfilling his mission.

She nodded in agreement, and told Nanxing to take him to get some dry rations, give him a horse, and send him on his way.

The other party was overjoyed and kowtowed to her several times.

Normally, Wutong would be extremely embarrassed.

However, she was in a state of utter confusion and couldn't feel any other subtle emotions. Her eyes were only on the town of Dagua, which was so close yet seemed so far away, as if she could never touch it.

On the other side, Nanxing, following her instructions, gave the man flattery and dry rations.

He led him behind some rocks, where their figures were hidden by the stones.

The soldier cupped his hands and said, "I'll leave you here. I can ride my horse on my own. Thank you."

Nanxing didn't say anything, her eyes fixed on him.

Unaware of what was happening, he mounted the horse, but before he could even finish the movement, blood gushed from his neck.

boom--

Upon landing, the horse kicked its hooves restlessly.

Nanxing expressionlessly sheathed her short sword and kicked the man.

"You bastard! You think you're worthy of protecting our country?!"

He spat at the man, left the corpse and the provisions, and led his horse back.

When Wutong saw him leading the horse back, she looked back curiously, but because of the rocks, she couldn't see the body.

"what happened?"

Nanxing said casually, "He can't ride a horse; he'll walk back."

Wutong hummed in agreement, not giving it much thought, her mind entirely focused on Dagua Town.

She had to go and see, she thought.

As the saying goes, seeing is believing, and even if that person saw Abdo die with his own eyes, it doesn't mean that no miracle will happen, right?

She herself is a miracle. She traveled from the 21st century to this place. Who can say that Abudu will definitely not come back to life?

The idea grew stronger and stronger in my mind.

Flags have been raised in Dagua Town, and Eastern Qi troops are stationed there. These thousand soldiers cannot go there, otherwise a battle will definitely break out, and they will be utterly defeated.

But she can go by herself.

If that person can escape from the town, then she can definitely get in too.

Wutong called Nanxing over and told him her plan, wanting him to stay here with the soldiers while she went to Dagua Town alone to investigate the situation.

Unexpectedly, Nanxing, who usually obeyed her every word, firmly objected: "No!"

"why?"

Nanxing said seriously, "The defeat is like a landslide. The most rational thing for us now is to go back to the southern border to ask for reinforcements."

Wutong deeply agreed, knowing that what he said made sense, but she was not convinced.

She changed her wording.

"You go back and get reinforcements, I'll go to town myself and see what's going on."

Live to see people, die to see corpses.

Abdo hated being insulted, and she did everything in her power to bring his body out and give it a proper burial.

Nanxing frowned unhappily: "Do you have to be so stubborn?"

With tears in her eyes, Wutong nodded: "I'm sorry, I have to go."

She had to go, but he couldn't just watch her go to her death.

Nanxing kept these words to himself. As Wutong was about to leave, he circled around behind her and knocked her unconscious with a single blow from his scabbard.

She collapsed softly beside Wutong, and he gently half-embraced her before handing her over to the other soldiers.

"Keep an eye on her and wait for me here."

"Yes."

Despite his young age, Nanxing exudes a powerful presence, displaying an undeniable kingly demeanor in his conversation.

The soldiers watched him leave, and knowing they had been defeated, they sat on the ground in silence, listless.

More than an hour later, it was getting dark.

The sky was overcast, without any glow of dawn, and looked like it was about to rain.

Wutong groaned and slowly woke up, covering her wound in a daze.

Why did she faint?

Remembering Nanxing's resolute face, she panicked and asked the soldier, receiving the same answer she had guessed.

Is he crazy?

Dagua Town is dangerous, she can't go, but can he go?

Wutong was about to give chase when the soldier stopped her, shook his head, and said, "He's been gone for a long time. Let us wait here."

How long do we have to wait?

Wutong squatted down, holding her head, feeling like a complete failure.

Even when she first transmigrated, she had never suffered such a blow.

Time was not up, Abdo could not be saved, and she couldn't even keep an eye on her only "follower." She was utterly useless!

Despair engulfed her, and darkness gradually enveloped her.

Suddenly, a soldier shouted, "He's back!"

Wutong immediately stood up and looked up, and sure enough, Nanxing's familiar slender figure appeared in her field of vision.

He walked over step by step, his face covered in dust, making his features unrecognizable.

He stopped in front of her and handed her what he was holding—Abdo's knife.

“This is all we have,” he said slowly and heavily. “I’ve searched the entire town of Dagua, but I haven’t found his body.”
