Chapter 74 Good Brother-in-Law

Wutong didn't like him much; she only greeted him before dinner and then only talked to Ruolan. (Shanwu said)

Zhou Pan'an seized the opportunity to interject, and even put a piece of food on her plate: "Wutong, it must be tough being a soldier out there, right? Come on, eat more."

His tone was so concerned, and although he wasn't particularly handsome, he was dressed very well.

Anyone who didn't know better would probably think he was a good brother-in-law just by looking at him.

Wutong didn't want to talk to him too much. She always felt that he had ill intentions, especially now that she was married to Ruolan. In order to avoid suspicion, she shouldn't have too much contact with him.

She casually said, "It's alright, it's alright," and ate the piece of meat that had been picked up from her chopsticks. Before she could even swallow it, Zhou Pan'an picked up another piece of meat with his chopsticks.

She glanced at Ruolan, whose expression was normal, seemingly unconcerned.

She had no choice but to eat it again.

Zhou Pan'an laughed and said, "That's right, you need to eat more meat to grow bigger. You soldiers live a life of hardship, so don't be shy if you find something delicious."

Nanxing stared at him expressionlessly, while Zhao Sanyang stuffed the food into his mouth with even more rudeness, until his belly was bulging.

Wutong held her chopsticks and smiled faintly, "Actually, it's really not bad."

Zhou Pan'an said, "How can it get better? Some people in the village have been conscripted before, and it is said that they would drink their own urine when they were thirsty! Drinking urine, is that something a human would do? Luckily I am an educated man, otherwise I would have gone crazy if I had been conscripted into the army."

Drinking urine is for survival, isn't it? How is that something a human being wouldn't do?

Zhou Pan'an's words were clearly derogatory. Zhao Sanyang came from a family of soldiers, but luckily he was thick-skinned and didn't catch the implication. (Shanwu said...)

Wutong was even less inclined to chat with him, and chuckled twice.

Zhou Pan'an took her smile as encouragement and asked, "By the way, when are you planning to get married?"

Wutong lowered her head, not looking at him, chewing rice grains in her mouth: "I haven't decided yet."

"Haven't met the right person yet? If not, come find me. Let me tell you, there are several strong young men in the next village..."

Snapped!

Wutong slammed her chopsticks on the table, interrupting him.

Everyone looked at her. She took a deep breath, stood up, and said, "I'm going out to relieve myself..."

After saying that, he walked out of the tent.

The moonlight was bright, reflecting on the water, and she kept thinking.

Was Zhou Pan'an doing this on purpose?

Did they deliberately want to expose her identity in front of her friends?

Is he taking revenge on himself for leaving back then?

Ripples spread across the water's surface, and Wutong's heart calmed down with them, realizing that she had probably overthought things and that it was likely just an unintentional mistake.

Besides, she stayed here entirely for Ruolan's sake. What Zhou Pan'an did was none of her business. She could just avoid him in the future.

After calming herself down, Wutong walked back to the tent. As soon as she lifted the curtain, she saw Zhao Sanyang's sly smile.

"Hey, Wutong's back! Come on, put on a dress and let us see."

Her heart skipped a beat, but she asked, feigning normalcy, "What's wrong with you?"

Zhao Sanyang pointed at Zhou Pan'an: "Your brother-in-law said so. You've always been raised like a little sister, and you look prettier than a girl in a dress. There's a bunch of old bachelors over at Yuemen Pass. If they ever miss a woman, they'll have you dance in a dress to ease their lovesickness, haha..."

Bullshit! Would Zhou Pan'an even remember what she looked like back then?

Wutong gave him a cold look, sat down and said, "Stop fooling around, eat quickly."

Zhao Sanyang grumbled about how boring she was, then grabbed a chicken leg and started gnawing on it.

Ruolan poured Wutong a glass of wine. Wutong sniffed it, found it wasn't very strong, and then tilted his head back and drank it.

Zhou Pan'an didn't speak, but kept looking at her with a half-smile in his eyes.

After the meal, Ruolan asked her to stay and sleep with her that night.

Wutong could tell that it wasn't convenient for her here either, and that she really didn't want to have any new contact with Zhou Pan'an, so she said that her tent was ready and she could just find a place to pitch it.

Ruolan didn't insist, but gave her a lantern for her to use when she got up at night.

Wutong and Zhao Sanyang left and set up camp to rest in an open area on the hillside.

Zhou Pan'an stood in front of the door with his arms crossed, watching them, and said rudely, "You really can't tell this girl is like that. She can sleep soundly with two men. Do you think she slept with other men in the army? Are those guys blind? They can't even recognize a woman?"

Ruolan said, "Why should you care about her?"

Zhou Pan'an stroked his chin, his gaze lingering on the slender figure: "I think it's such a pity. A young woman, spending two years among a bunch of bachelors, is she even human anymore?"

Ruolan frowned, her face turning cold: "Don't even think about hitting on her. Isn't one maid enough for you to sleep with? You bastard!"

Zhou Pan'an grabbed her chin, his fingers almost rubbing her tender skin raw: "You called me a bastard? I'm your husband."

Ruolan was not afraid at all and snorted coldly: "I will not only call you a bastard, I will also call you shameless."

"I'm shameless only towards you, so how about it? Come inside with me and do something shameless?"

Zhou Pan'an licked her lips and rubbed his lower body against her abdomen intentionally or unintentionally.

Ruolan blushed instantly, cursed him as a hooligan, and went into the tent.

Zhou Pan'an knew her inside and out, and knew that she was not refusing because of this. He followed her in with a lewd grin, and then looked back at Wutong and shook his head regretfully.

The sycamore tree was as thin as a bean sprout and had no appeal. However, it was only when something that should have been yours suddenly slipped away that you felt resentful.

As the night passed, Wutong woke up and went out to fetch water to wash up.

Inside the tent, Nanxing beat Zhao Sanyang up again because the other man's loud snoring had kept him awake all night.

The villagers gradually got up and gathered on the shore to wash their clothes and brush their teeth.

Wutong didn't know what to talk to them about, but not talking would seem cold, so she simply moved to a corner.

Zhou Shan also came out to wash clothes, carrying a large wooden bucket filled with clothes belonging to the whole family.

She stood out from the other village women, but when she saw Wutong, her eyes lit up, and she ran over and called out, "Wutong...brother."

Wutong smiled and said, "You're really clever."

Zhou Shan squatted down with a grin and started washing her next to her.

The man's clothes were dirty and smelly, and too big for her hands to hold, so she used a wooden mallet to pound them hard, and soon she was covered in a fine sweat.

Seeing that she was working hard washing, Wutong offered to help and picked out a few larger items from her.

Zhou Shan was very grateful. After looking at her for a while, he couldn't help but ask, "Is the outside world fun?"

Wutong rubbed her clothes, wiped the water droplets splashed on her face with the back of her hand, and said, "I'm fine, why do you ask that?"

Zhou Shan shook his head and did not answer.

In a short while, the clothes were washed quickly with the help of the sycamore tree.
