Chapter 57 The General's Might

He stroked his beard, which was flying in the wind, and said, "You are all my soldiers. You must go and come back safe and sound, understand?"

Abdo doesn't speak official jargon and doesn't know how to write the word "politeness," but he climbed his way up from the lowest rank of the army as a menial soldier and treated everyone in the army as his brother.

The group nodded emphatically, and Lieutenant Li said, "General, we entrust the Moon Gate Pass to you. We will definitely go and return as soon as possible."

"Hahaha!" Abdo laughed loudly three times, quite confidently. He swung his broadsword in mid-air, then plunged the blade into the mud, and declared loudly, "One man can hold the pass against ten thousand, not to mention I have so many brothers. If those sons of bitches dare to invade, they'll have to step over my dead body first!"

Moved by what they heard, the three thousand soldiers raised their weapons in unison and shouted, "General, you are mighty!"

Lieutenant Li bowed in farewell, turned his horse around, and looked at the rising sun in the distance, saying, "Let's go!"

The procession began to move, like a long, winding dragon stretching straight into the distance along the road.

Abudo watched them go until he was all alone.

The autumn wind rises again, making the place exceptionally desolate.

"A bunch of idiots, they think they can fly just because they've grown wings. If they go out and embarrass themselves, I'll teach them a lesson when they get back."

He lowered his head, muttering to himself, when Big Yellow sneezed. He then laughed, patted its neck, and said, "Old buddy..."

A man and a horse entered Dagua Town, where the area outside the town was finally deserted.

In this world, traveling far from home is a very tough thing.

Wutong had already experienced this once before, but this time, the experience was still extremely painful.

After riding a horse all morning, her buttocks, which had finally healed, were chafed again. The chafed areas kept rubbing against the horse's undulating back, causing her to roll her eyes in pain.

But looking back, she was actually doing alright.

Some soldiers didn't have horses and had to walk the entire way. By the time they reached their destination, their soles would probably have developed a thick layer of calluses.

The only good thing is that the weather is still quite cool, neither too hot nor too cold, and there's a cool breeze blowing from time to time, making it feel especially pleasant.

However, this is the border region. Once we reach the Central Plains, those southern areas will probably get hot again.

Wutong switched to using his left hand to pull the reins, and wiped the sweat from his right hand with the back of his hand. The sweat wasn't from the heat, but from the pain.

We've only been gone for half a day, how are we going to get through the rest?

Nanxing, who was standing next to her, saw this, unscrewed the water bag, handed it to her, and stood there in front of her without saying a word.

"Thank you, I'm not thirsty." Wutong waved her hand.

Nanxing stubbornly shook the water bag, gesturing for her to take it: "You're sweating."

Too embarrassed to talk about the reason for sweating, Wutong could only take the drink and tilt her head back to drink a mouthful.

Nanxing took the water bag back, put the lid back on, and tied it around her waist.

A soldier riding next to her saw this and came over to tease her, "Hey, is this your brother?"

Wutong smiled and patted Nanxing's head: "Yes."

Nanxing initially flinched, but then realized the pressure was just right, so she obediently let the woman touch her, looking just like a cute little dog.

The soldier chatted casually with Wutong.

The incident last time made many people in the army know Wutong. They knew that she had saved Abudo's life and was also Abudo's personal bodyguard, so people would strike up a conversation with her wherever she went.

She welcomed everyone and was happy to make friends. On the battlefield, everyone was a brother who had gone through thick and thin together. Knowing more people might mean that one of them could save her life someday.

They ate their rations on horseback at noon and continued their journey for the rest of the afternoon. By the time they reached the western foothills, they had traveled about fifty kilometers and a stream appeared ahead.

The road was not safe at night, and it was easy to fall behind if walking in the dark. Commander Li ordered everyone to set up camp and rest by the stream.

The three thousand people were divided into ten battalions, each with three hundred people. Then, thirty people formed a team, and each team sat around a bonfire.

The cooks went to the stream to fetch clean water to cook for the soldiers.

Life on the march was naturally different from life in the prosperous town of Dagua, but after a whole day of marching, being able to sit down and rest was a happy thing.

The group chatted noisily, occasionally bursting into laughter.

Wutong unloaded the things from Fufu's back, saw Nanxing standing to the side, and asked, "Are you tired?"

Nanxing shook his head.

Wutong stretched, sat down on the ground, lazily swung her legs, and sighed, "Phew... I'm so tired..."

Her buttocks still hurt, so she couldn't sit properly and could only lean against the side with the intact skin.

Nanxing squatted down, rummaged through the package, pulled out a corner of red cloth, and asked suspiciously, "What are you doing with this?"

Wutong glanced at it and said, "My sister got married, I'll take it back as a gift for her."

"You said I'm your brother, will you give me a gift when I get married?"

Nanxing stuffed the red cloth back in and sat down, hugging her knees.

Wutong chuckled and poked his head: "You little devil, you're only a few years old, and you're already thinking about how to get something out of me?"

Nanxing frowned impatiently: "Just tell me if you're going to send it or not."

Wutong withdrew her hand and looked up at the starry sky: "Send it, if we're still together then."

Nanxing said, "I don't want red cloth, it's so ugly."

"Then what do you want?"

He was speechless for a long time before saying, "I haven't thought it through yet. I'll tell you when I have, but you have to promise me."

Here we go again, with that domineering tone.

Wutong glanced at the corner of her mouth and casually agreed.

Nanxing's complexion improved considerably.

Soon the rice was cooked, and its aroma wafted above the campsite.

Everyone lined up to get their food, and Wutong was among them, holding two bowls, one for her and one for Nanxing.

Nanxing said he wasn't tired, but his hands were blistered from the reins. Wutong couldn't bear it and told him to sit down and rest while she took care of him.

The queue gradually shortened until it was finally Wutong's turn.

Dinner was served in several large wooden barrels, consisting of various coarse grains and wild vegetables. While the cooks were washing the pots, they also caught two fish from the stream and added them to the pots to cook.

The taste wasn't particularly good, but it had a pleasant, refreshing aroma.

"Oh, it's Lord Wutong."

The cooks serving the food recognized her and said warmly, "How much do you want? Let me give you two extra spoonfuls."

Wutong quickly replied, "No, no, I have no appetite."

The cook insisted on filling both of her bowls to the brim, leaving almost no room for her hands to grab anything.

Wutong was grateful yet helpless, and carried the food toward her tent.

Nanxing had already prepared chopsticks, and the two sat down to eat.

The porridge was piping hot, and there was a bonfire blazing nearby. Wutong started sweating after only a couple of bites; it was really hot this time.

Nanxing silently drank her porridge, then suddenly remembered something, put down her bowl, stood up, ran into the tent, and came out with a handful of dried meat in her hand, which she stuffed into Wutong's face: "Here you go."
