Chapter 55 Rouge is a gift for you

Wutong brushed him aside, angrily saying, "Get away from me! Why are you shaving people's heads for no reason? Have you gone mad?"

Nanxing almost fell over from her push, and awkwardly steadied himself by holding onto the table. He looked at her nervously, not daring to breathe.

He looked so pitiful, like a child who had done something wrong.

But he was just a child; at his age, Wutong was still in school.

She was both infuriating and hateful, yet helpless, and irritably rubbed her head.

Nanxing asked cautiously, "Shall I go and call a doctor for you?"

Wutong said irritably, "No need!"

She stood up, rummaged through the cabinet and found a white linen bandage, then wrapped it around the wound.

When soldiers are on the march, they always keep such emergency supplies on hand. When Wutong saw them, she found that they were very useful whether used as a breast wrap or as a menstrual belt, so she asked the soldier in charge of the warehouse for a lot of them.

The wound wasn't big; once it was bandaged, the bleeding stopped.

She turned around and saw Nanxing still standing there pitifully, not daring to lift her head.

"You wash the sheets. If they're not clean, you won't be sleeping tonight. It's all your fault!"

Nanxing didn't complain at all. She lowered her head to pull out the bed sheet, hugged it to her arms, and prepared to go outside to wash it.

Just then, someone knocked on the door. He looked at Wutong with a sense of unease, becoming increasingly nervous.

Wutong pouted, put her injured hand behind her back, and went to open the door.

The visitor was Lieutenant Li.

Lieutenant Li said, "The general has already told me that you are also going to the Central Plains. I happen to be taking stock of supplies, so why don't you come along and take a look?"

Previously, Lieutenant Li handled all the military supplies. Abuduo was illiterate and never interfered, trusting him completely.

Lieutenant Li was also very capable and never made a mistake.

The fact that Wutong was chosen to assist with such an important matter clearly indicates that she was being specially trained.

Without hesitation, Wutong excitedly replied, "Okay!"

As she was about to leave, Commandant Li noticed Nanxing standing behind her and asked, "What's wrong with the child?"

Wutong glanced at him and said, "It's nothing, just a child throwing a tantrum. Let's go."

Lieutenant Li said nothing and led him to the warehouse.

Nanxing kept watching them until their figures disappeared around the corner, without blinking.

He longed for the sycamore tree to be his, and his alone.

She could be his older sister, his maid, or even his wife when he grew up.

But Wutong refused to grant his wish; in her heart, he was just a child who could throw a tantrum at any moment.

Nanxing lowered his head absently, his eyes reflecting the few drops of bright red blood, and clenched them tightly in his hand.

When Wutong arrived at the warehouse, he discovered that not only Commander Li was there to tally the supplies, but Abuduo was also there.

This is a very rare thing.

She went over to greet him, and Abuduo opened a large wooden box, grabbed a few pieces of dried meat from it, and tossed them to her. Wutong chewed them with relish.

The warehouse is very large; it is the largest room in the general's mansion.

The supplies that Lieutenant Li brought back this time, along with what they had brought back from the southern border, filled the entire room.

Of course, this is only part of it; the majority is at the camp, where it is guarded by designated personnel.

It seems that as long as there is no war, they will have no problem spending the winter in Dagua Town.

Li Duwei began to tally the supplies, mainly food for the journey. He planned to purchase these locally once they reached the Central Plains, which would be much easier than transporting them from there.

The floods won't last long, they'll just be rapid, and we should be back in about two months.

Each time he finished calculating something, he would report it to Abdo. Abdo would casually reply, and whether he remembered or not, he would frantically dig through the items like a dog. Finally, he dug out a jar of wine, opened it, smelled it, and exclaimed, "Lieutenant Li, you are truly my good brother, haha..."

Li Duwei looked helplessly at Wutong, who smiled knowingly, everything understood without saying a word.

"Hey, what is this?"

Abdo suddenly pulled out an exquisite box, which stood out incongruously among the rice and soybeans.

He opened the box, dipped his finger in the contents, and licked it; his fingertip was bright red.

"Pah, what is this stuff? It looks like lard..." he muttered, frowning.

Li Duwei couldn't help but chuckle and said, "That's not for eating, it's rouge for young ladies."

Abudo asked, "Why did you buy this? Is it a gift for your lover?"

Lieutenant Li was a very proper man, and he spoke with utmost seriousness. He explained to him, word by word, "When I bought frostbite cream at the general store before, the owner was short of money, so he gave me a few boxes of rouge as a bonus. If you can't find inkpad in the future, you can use this as a substitute."

Abudo examined the box from left to right: "Forget it, will this stuff even work? I'd rather take some to Jin Jiao'er..."

As he spoke, his gaze suddenly shifted to the sycamore tree. As if remembering something, he closed the rouge box and tossed it at her: "This box is open. She didn't like it, so I'm giving it to you."

Wutong hurriedly caught it, but a heavy stone seemed to have been thrown into her heart.

Now she could no longer console herself; Abdo most likely already knew her identity, but was just not saying it.

Why didn't he say it?

When will he say it?

These two questions overwhelmed her, causing her to be absent-minded for the next few hours.

After helping Lieutenant Li count the supplies, Wutong returned to her room to rest.

When she woke up the next morning, she saw Nanxing sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at her without moving.

She screamed in fright, wiped away her cold sweat, and sat up: "What are you doing? Trying to scare people in broad daylight? Nanxing, you've been getting more and more naughty these past few days."

Nanxing ignored her words and stared at her stubbornly.

Wutong ignored her and got out of bed to wash up. When she came back after walking around, Nanxing was still staring at her.

"My ancestor, I give up! I surrender! What exactly do you want?"

Being stared at by such big eyes all the time is really unsettling.

Nanxing finally spoke, his voice a little hoarse, as if he hadn't slept all night.

"You're going to the Central Plains?"

Wutong was stunned for a moment, then remembered that Nanxing was also there when Li Duwei came yesterday, and that's when she must have heard it.

It turns out he was keeping this matter to himself.

Wutong nodded: "That's right, I'm leaving tomorrow. Be good in the General's Mansion."

She reached out to touch Nanxing's hair, but Nanxing blocked her way.

"What are you going to the Central Plains for? I won't allow you to go!"

Despite his age, he speaks with the domineering air of an emperor.

Wutong remained silent for a long time before saying, "You can't stop me, and I've made up my mind."

Nanxing hugged her waist tightly: "Then I'll go with you!"

Anyway, he didn't want to break up with her.

Wutong said with difficulty, "I'm afraid that won't work. We mainly focus on flood control in the past. What would it be like to bring a child with us? What if you get swept away by the water? I'd have to come and save you."

Nanxing said, "I won't be washed away by the water."

No matter what Wutong said or explained, he wouldn't budge. In the end, Wutong had no choice but to take him to Abudo and ask if Abudo would allow him to go.
