A Farm Girl: Three Acres of Fertile Land Can Be Exchanged for a Country
Chapter 2, Burying One's Own Mother
Ruolan shook her head: "We don't know either, what do you think, Auntie?"
Auntie immediately said, "You can bury him anywhere on the mountain, or next to your father's grave. Don't bury him in the ground. If the two of you can't dig it up, you can ask Gen-ge to come and help. He's not working in the fields these days, so he has plenty of free time."
Ruolan said, "This..."
Wutong walked over and said, "Does it have to be buried outside? I can't bear to see Mother leave us. Can I bury her in the yard?"
The aunt's face immediately changed: "How could such a thing be? Is the yard a place to bury people? Absolutely not, absolutely not!"
Her attitude was so firm, and she even seemed to want to come in and move the body, so Ruolan quickly stopped her.
"Auntie, don't worry, Wutong was just joking. Let's help Mother change into a clean set of clothes first, and then we'll go out to bury her."
Aunt's expression softened slightly: "That's more like it. Wutong, you should learn more from your sister. When you have no parents, you'll have to rely on her."
After she finished speaking, she walked out, but after taking two steps, she couldn't help but turn back and remind them, "Let me tell you, you absolutely cannot bury anything in the yard, do you hear me?"
Ruolan said, "I understand, Auntie, don't worry."
Only then did she truly leave.
Ruolan closed the courtyard gate, walked back to the body, and looked at the sycamore tree.
"What should we do now?"
Yes, what should we do?
The two inexplicably traveled to this place, inexplicably encountered death, and didn't even know what dynasty or place they were in. They were both completely bewildered.
The only saving grace is that the villagers don't seem to have doubted their identities yet.
Wutong sighed and said, "She was still my mother, and she died such a tragic death. Let's bury her properly."
"Okay, I'll go inside and see if there are any suitable tools for digging."
After Ruolan finished speaking, she walked towards her room.
Wutong looked around, went to the kitchen, brought back a half-full basin of water, dipped a cloth in the water, and patiently wiped the blood off "Mother's" face.
The courtyard gate was pushed open a crack, and a figure peeked out from outside.
Wutong looked up and saw her, recognizing her as the girl who had informed them of the earlier incident.
This was a good opportunity to gather information; children are never so guarded. She immediately spread out a cloth to cover the corpse's face, went over, and pulled the girl inside.
"Have you seen Auntie?" Wutong asked.
The girl scratched her head, her hands thin like chicken claws, covered in scars: "Are you talking about my mother?"
"Uh...yeah."
That aunt looked rough and uncouth, and her son wasn't good-looking either, but her daughter was quite beautiful, Wutong thought.
"She went to the field to pick vegetables."
Wutong recalled what her aunt had said earlier; it seemed that her family also owned land.
In such remote and impoverished areas, land and manpower are undoubtedly the greatest assets.
A thought struck her, and she asked, "Could you take me to my field? I'd like to pick some vegetables, but I can't walk any further now."
The girl was very innocent: "Okay, okay."
"Hold on."
Wutong went back into the house, where Ruolan was staring blankly at a closet full of tattered clothes.
She explained her plan, and Ruolan had no objection: "Okay, go ahead."
Wutong asked, "Aren't you coming along?"
In this unfamiliar village, being alone with a corpse would scare anyone, wouldn't it?
Ruolan used to be someone who would scream in fright if there was a cockroach in her dorm room.
Ruolan rubbed her cheeks, sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), her eyes somewhat numb: "I don't know either. Maybe what happened today was too unbelievable. I need to calm down..."
She looked up at Wutong and said, "Don't worry, I'll be fine."
Wutong could understand her feelings. Wutong considered herself to be thick-skinned and quick to accept things, but Ruolan had always been the type who needed to be protected.
She must have been really terrified.
"Oh right, I remember when that car came rushing towards us, you seemed to have something to say to me, didn't you?" Wutong suddenly remembered this.
Ruolan looked away in alarm, not daring to look at her, and said in a low voice, "No, you must have misheard."
"Really do not have?"
"Ah."
"Okay then, take care, I'll be back as soon as possible."
Wutong gave a brief explanation and then walked out of the courtyard with the girl.
After chatting for a while, Wutong learned that the girl's name was Zhou Shan, and she was the daughter of that aunt, who was their mother's sister.
This village is called Zhoujia Village. It is located on the edge of the dam and surrounded by mountains on the other three sides, making it very difficult to climb. The mountains have basically never left the village since they were built.
After walking around for a while, Wutong found that the village was even more backward than he had imagined, with no public facilities and no shops whatsoever.
She couldn't help but wonder, how did that group of people get in here, given how remote the place was? And what were they there for?
The handsome, cold profile of the leader flashed through Wutong's mind, and she was momentarily lost in thought.
There are many handsome male celebrities in the 21st century, each with their own style, but none of them can compare to the ones we see today.
"We've arrived, Sister Wutong..."
The sound of the mountain brought her back to her senses. Wutong rubbed her eyes and looked closely: "This is our land?"
Shan nodded: "Yes."
"..."
The land area is large enough; I estimate it can accommodate two houses.
But the field was overgrown with weeds and there was nothing there.
That makes sense, since there are no men in the family, farming is naturally more difficult.
The deceased mother didn't seem to be in good health either, and she had to raise two daughters, no wonder she was so poor that her house was bare.
"Thank you for your trouble. Let's go back now."
Wutong pulled Shan around and walked back, but out of the corner of her eye she caught sight of a rather large tiled house standing at the end of a side road.
Although the building materials used were similar to those of theirs, the house was neatly decorated, with blue bricks paving the ground, and a corridor visible from the open courtyard gate.
There were cows tied up outside the courtyard and flowers planted inside, making it much better than the houses of the villagers she had seen along the way.
"Whose house is this?" Wutong asked curiously.
Shan exclaimed, "Sister Wutong, how could you be so tired that you forgot about this? This is Master Zhou's house. We have to deliver rice to his family every year."
Isn't this similar to the nature of a landlord?
How could such people exist in such a backward place?
Wutong was a little surprised.
Shan looked at her expression, puzzled: "What's wrong, Sister Wutong?"
Wutong composed herself and shook her head: "It's alright, let's go back."
The two returned along the same route.
Wutong came back empty-handed, having brought nothing from the fields, but she had gathered a lot of information, so she was in a pretty good mood.
I never expected to run into my great-aunt again when I got back.
Her great-aunt stood at her door, as if she were specifically guarding them. As soon as she saw the two of them coming, she asked, "Where did you two run off to?"
