Chapter 10 The Courtyard

Upon closer listening, the sound did not come from the inner door, but from outside the main gate, accompanied by the sound of wheels. It was unclear who had arrived.

Wutong sat at the table, pretending to glance casually at the door. A moment later, a group of maids and guards escorted a richly dressed middle-aged woman into the room.

The woman had very fair skin, and although she had a few wrinkles on her face, her features were still elegant and beautiful, showing her charm in her youth.

Such a person, appearing in such a place, must not be an ordinary person.

I heard that the King of Southern Xinjiang's mother is still alive. Could this be his mother?

Wutong couldn't help but become curious.

The group of people rushed through the middle of the road like a gust of wind, their attention all focused on the woman, and no one had time to glance at her.

The woman was extremely frail, as if a gust of wind could kill her. Several maids hurriedly held up umbrellas and fans for her, shielding her head and face as she entered through the inner gate.

This person is clearly very particular and picky, and also very fond of beauty and lives a life of luxury.

Wutong had been here for so long, and this was the first time she had seen this type of person. She couldn't help but take a few more glances, feeling that even her back view was carefully dressed up.

As she craned her neck to look, she was suddenly patted on the shoulder, which startled her. Turning around, she saw a guard with a stern face.

"Are you Wutong?" the guard asked.

Wutong paused for a moment, then quickly nodded: "Yes."

The guard said mechanically, as if reciting a book, "Lord Li asked me to take you to your resting place. Please follow me."

Lord Li must be Li Deming. Although Wutong was a little disappointed that she didn't see Yinling return, she felt that it was already very good that the Prince's Mansion was willing to give her food and drink, so she obediently followed the guard.

The guards walked through the flowerbeds and led her into the large courtyard where servants and guests lived, proceeding with practiced ease.

There were so many courtyards and roads, one after another. The sycamore trees followed silently behind, their eyes looking around, trying their best to memorize the road conditions.

The guard walked for nearly fifteen minutes before finally stopping at the most secluded part of the courtyard. He took out his key, opened a wooden door, and pushed it open, saying to her, "This is the courtyard where you will be staying from now on."

Wutong asked in surprise, "Do I live in this courtyard alone?"

A private, self-contained house—such a great perk!

The guard nodded and said, "Lord Li knows you are injured and will send other servants to help you with your work. Just focus on recovering. Now come inside with me, and I'll show you around the courtyard."

Wutong didn't know whether the treatment she received was good or bad in the Prince's mansion, but for her personally, the conditions were already quite good, and her mood immediately improved as she followed the guard into the courtyard.

The courtyard is not very large, roughly thirty or forty square meters. A path is paved with blue bricks, and the rest of the ground is dry soil.

There are three rooms in the courtyard, totaling nearly 80 square meters. One of them is slightly larger and is used as a living room, furnished with tables, chairs, and benches.

The other two rooms are used as a bedroom and a kitchen, respectively.

It seemed no one had ever lived here. The tables, chairs, and stoves were all brand new, covered only with a thin layer of dust. Apart from the essential household items, there were no other miscellaneous items. The only greenery was the sturdy maple tree planted in the corner of the yard.

The maple leaves had long since changed color, turning golden and crimson, topped with a fiery sunset. When the cold wind blew, the leaves danced and fluttered, covering the ground within a five-meter diameter, even the well cover at the kitchen entrance.

The courtyard was in a very remote location, with no one living nearby. Even after being inside for a long time, I couldn't hear a single sound.

It's like a paradise on earth.

The Prince's Palace is a vast world, and this place is a world in itself.

And it will soon be a world that belongs only to her.

The guards were still diligently explaining the uses of various items and giving her instructions. Wutong stood outside the door and took a deep breath, feeling exceptionally wonderful.

She will work hard to save money, try to find Nanxing, and then buy a courtyard like this for herself, where she can live a peaceful and tranquil life.

A short while later, the guard finished his task and said to her, "The two servants will be bringing the doctor over in a bit. You can keep the servants here. If the doctor prescribes medicine, have the servants brew it. They will also prepare three meals a day. If you have any other matters, you can go to the Prince's steward or Lord Li, but they are both very busy, so it's best to handle things yourself."

Wutong thanked him gratefully and offered to see him out, but the guard waved his hand and said it wasn't necessary, then disappeared in a few steps.

Wutong peeked out from the door frame for a while, but not a single person passed by in the alley. If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes before, she simply wouldn't have believed that she was in the Southern Border Royal Palace.

I wonder how Yinling is doing. She must be so happy to see her beloved brother Fufeng.

Wutong withdrew her gaze, suddenly felt a pang of loneliness, touched her cheek, and walked back.

She couldn't sit still; the yard was unkempt. Wutong wanted to fetch a basin of water to wipe away the dust, but her hand injury hadn't fully healed, so she didn't dare touch the water. She tidied up the bed a little, took out the quilt and spread it out, and then picked up a broom to sweep the fallen leaves in the yard.

The fallen leaves were beautiful, but also very troubling. She swept them alone, but before she had even finished half of them, she was already so tired that she could hardly straighten her back.

Imagine, in the days to come, this will be her home, and no one will interfere.

Wutong perked up again, stretched, and prepared to continue sweeping.

Just then, the wooden door was pushed open, and two short servants walked in, followed by an old man carrying a medicine box.

The servants were probably under twenty, young and strong, with a hint of the slyness typical of young people their age. They came in empty-handed with the doctor, without helping him carry his trunk, and gave Wutong a loose bow: "Lord Wutong, we were sent by Lord Li to do your chores."

Wutong nodded, appearing indifferent, but in reality, she didn't know how to respond.

She had never been served before, and she couldn't think of what to call them, let alone how to order them around.

We all receive salaries from the people of southern Xinjiang, so let's just consider us colleagues.

She cleared her throat and asked, "What are your names?"

The shorter one answered, "This servant's name is Duan Bailiu."

After he finished speaking, he pointed to the tall man next to him and introduced him, saying, "His name is Duan Qiyi."

Wutong wrote it down and looked at the old man.

The old man had practiced medicine for many years. His medical skills weren't particularly outstanding, but he was wholeheartedly devoted to his profession. He treated patients honestly and prescribed medicine honestly. He had no interest in anything other than injuries and illnesses, which is why he was able to earn a living from the Prince's residence.

After he entered the room, his eyes were fixed on Wutong's bandaged hand and never left her. Wutong quickly bowed and said, "Doctor, please come in and sit down."

She handed the broom to the tall Duan Qiyi, welcomed the doctor into the living room, and quickly wiped out two chairs with a dry rag in one hand. She sat down facing the doctor, with a square table between them.
