Adorable Kids in Space: Lucky Wife is So Carefree
Chapter 34 The grilled fish and grilled sweet potatoes were so delicious!
Practicing calligraphy in the morning was a must, without fail. Even if Brother Le wanted to slack off, Brother Xi wouldn't allow it; they had to finish practicing before they could run away. They skipped breakfast, each with a hard-boiled egg in their pocket, and carrying the things Ru Xiu had packed, followed Brother Le to the back mountain.
Ru Xiu wasn't in a hurry. She knew that the two younger ones, Shi Jie and Xi Ge, would take care of them. She ate a bowl of porridge before walking behind, carrying a hoe and a kitchen knife in her hand.
Second Aunt and Caifeng arrived a little late. She walked much better than last time, steadily, and was even carrying a slaughtered chicken and a basket of potatoes.
Uncle Li and two uncles who came up from the mountain to help have already erected the pillars of the chicken coop. According to them, it can't be built too high because of the strong winds on the mountain; the roof also needs to be tilted quite a bit, otherwise it will easily collapse when it rains.
It was still early, so the children were allowed to play freely, but they couldn't go too far. Each of them had a stick and used it to tap and bang on things to prevent snakes and insects from escaping.
Ru Xiu followed them around, throwing herbs into her spatial storage whenever she saw them. Now she had more than a dozen kinds of herbs in her space, some of which had already flowered. If they could bear fruit, they could be planted on a large scale in the spring.
When Ruxiu returned, her second aunt had already built a stove with stones and was cooking porridge on it.
I sliced the pork belly into thin pieces, marinated them with oil, salt, and spices, and then skewered them one by one with the bamboo skewers that Mr. Li had made last night.
Lacking any tools for applying oil, Uncle Li cut down a bamboo stalk, split off a section, and then flattened one end with a stone to make a small broom. Although it looked crude, it should still be usable.
The children searched for larger clods of earth and gathered together to build a sweet potato kiln. Le Ge was too self-important and took it upon himself to lead Pingzi in building it. However, he lacked patience and the kiln collapsed repeatedly. After several attempts, he lost interest and went off to catch fish and shrimp.
In the end, it was Caifeng, Xige, and Shijie who patiently finished building it.
After burning the kiln several times until it was red-hot inside and out, they piled the sweet potatoes and potatoes inside, then smashed the red-hot sweet potato kiln on top and covered it with the kiln. They then shoveled wet mud around the kiln and sealed it with another layer. Finally, it was finished.
Finally, all you need to do is wait patiently for the sweet potatoes and potatoes to cook through.
The chicken was already marinated. Caifeng wrapped it in several lotus leaves. All that was left was to build a small kiln to make the kiln chicken. With the experience from the first time, Xige and Shijie worked together very skillfully and quickly, and the kiln was built in no time.
After cooking the porridge and bringing it down, Ruxiu placed a few raw bamboo strips on the stone stove and started grilling pork belly by hand.
My second aunt used large tree roots that she had dug up to start the fire; the charcoal left over from cooking porridge could be used for a long time. Ru Xiu could grill five skewers on each side at a time, not much worse than a modern barbecue grill.
The meat is already marinated, so all you need to do is brush it with oil. It's not complicated at all. But without chili peppers, the barbecue just doesn't feel like it's missing a bit of its soul.
Le Ge, Xi Ge, and Ping'er were in charge of catching fish and shrimp, while Ge'er, like a little adult, played and jumped around with Tao Zi.
"Brother Le, can you be serious? You always catch such small fish. If you catch a few more, you'll kill all the small fish."
"You even said that if it weren't for you, that big fish would have been mine."
"Look, I caught two more shrimp, they're huge!"
"Go away, I've already caught more than a dozen, your two aren't even enough to fill a tooth gap."
"Erdede, we can't kill the fish and shrimp, or we won't be able to come for barbecue next time." With better nutrition these days, Ge'er's speech has become much more fluent, and she can now speak in long strings, and her words are becoming clearer and clearer.
After burying the kiln chicken, Caifeng came over to help her second aunt skewer shrimp, gut fish, and marinate fish. They worked together quickly and efficiently.
Once cooked long enough, the pork belly sizzled and released its oil. The delicious aroma distracted the younger children from catching fish, and they all gathered around.
Ten skewers came out of the oven on the first batch. Youyou cut them into a bowl and taught them to wrap them in lettuce before eating them. It's a pity there was no perilla, otherwise, wrapping them in another sheet of perilla would have made them even more delicious.
The children ate with gusto, smacking their lips happily afterward: "Pork can be eaten like this? It's so delicious and fragrant!" They just wished the pork slices were a bigger piece, like braised pork belly.
Seeing the children enjoying their meal made everyone happy.
Mother's hands were too busy to move. Xige stuffed the first piece of pork belly he wrapped into her mouth before wrapping the second. Ge'er followed suit and stuffed a half-eaten piece of pork belly into her second aunt's mouth, and her second aunt didn't mind. Pingzi and Taozi were still a little shy. They looked at this and that, and then stuffed a piece into their mother's mouth as well.
With delicious food, the children stopped running around, and they had caught almost all the fish and shrimp.
They all squatted beside Ruxiu, watching her work, while her second aunt occasionally added charcoal. After watching Ruxiu grill two rounds, Xige and Shijie were eager to try and automatically joined in to help her. Both children were meticulous and patient, and they did a great job, their movements even more skillful than Ruxiu's.
In less than an hour, Ruxiu was squeezed out. Ruxiu was happy to be a hands-off manager, letting the children make a fuss and get their hands dirty, and having a good time doing things themselves.
Auntie and Ruxiu lay lazily nearby, chatting idly, while the children occasionally came to pass them a piece of fish or a shrimp.
"Have you really never thought about finding someone else?" Ru Xiu is only a few years older than Cai Feng. It would be too stifling to live like this for the rest of her life.
"Second Aunt, marriage is about fate. If you just want to lighten your burden and randomly choose someone you don't like, what's the difference between you and an animal?"
"That's true. You're such a good person, and you're so young. Now you're old and you don't even have anyone to talk to." Auntie Er reflected on her life and sometimes felt it was all for nothing.
"If I never meet someone I love in my life, I'll be content with these four children." Ru Xiu truly thought this way, both in her past life and now.
"Second Aunt, Mother, come quick! The sweet potatoes and potatoes are ready to eat, and the chicken is cooked too."
"Come quickly, come quickly, come quickly."
First, peel the roasted chicken; the aroma fills the air, and the chicken juices are flowing out.
Caifeng tore the chicken apart with her hands. The two younger ones each got a chicken leg, Le Ge and Pingzi each got a wing, and the rest were all torn into pieces. It was so delicious, fragrant and tender, but unfortunately there wasn't enough. Li Guye and the others didn't get any.
"Once the chickens are raised, we can each have one next year, and everyone can eat their fill."
"Hehe, that's great!" The younger children didn't know how long next year would be, but they were just happy.
A pile of dark, mushy sweet potatoes and potatoes were pulled out, and the children, not minding the dirt, grabbed them with their hands, peeled them, and ate them with great enjoyment.
The little ones had black mouths, noses, and hands, just like little black cats—they were incredibly cute.
Ru Xiu lived a life that exuded a sense of tranquility and peace.
