Adorable Kids in Space: Lucky Wife is So Carefree

Chapter 31 Cai Feng and her son-in-law are back.

Now that it's decided that Xige and Lege will go to school after the New Year, Shijie's handicrafts will probably need to be done for a long time, and they definitely won't be able to take care of the housework. Ruxiu felt that she wasn't superhuman and definitely couldn't finish everything. It seemed that the seven acres of mountain land needed to be replanned. The only source of chickens, fish, and shrimp could be the mountain, which was secluded with a small pond and not many people walked there. The chickens' food could also be grown on the mountain, which would definitely require someone to guard it. As a widow with a family to support, she naturally couldn't go up the mountain to guard it. Ruxiu's head ached with worry.

When Ruxiu got home, in addition to the things she had bought, there were two more fish in her basket.

"Where is Second Aunt?" The children were a little surprised not to see Second Aunt Ruxiu, even though the door was closed properly.

"Aunt Caifeng is back, along with her uncle, brother, and sister. They don't seem very happy, so Auntie went back."

"Mother, don't worry, we've locked the door properly." Sister Shi was afraid her mother wouldn't be at ease.

She handed over half of the snacks and carried a fish, saying, "Brother Xi and Sister Shi, give the snacks to your younger siblings and teach them to practice their calligraphy. Mother is going to visit Auntie Er."

Every family has its troubles. My second aunt has helped us so much, and now that there's something going on in the family, I, Ruxiu, can't just stand by and do nothing. So I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help.

“Caifeng and her husband are back.”

Caifeng was a few years younger than Xiu, and was dark-skinned and thin, seemingly not in good health. Her husband, surnamed Li, was rather robust and a very hardworking man. He would usually help his second aunt plow the fields or gather two loads of firewood before returning home.

The family was talking when they saw Ruxiu coming over, so they all stood up awkwardly. Caifeng wiped her eyes, and her second aunt's eyes were also a little red.

The two children, Pingzi and Taozi, were timid, one six years old and the other five, and both thin and small. Their clothes were clean and unpatched, but very old and short, not much better than Ruxiu's family before the estrangement.

Their whole family knew that Auntie Er and Ruxiu had a good relationship, and they had only just learned that Ruxiu had broken off her marriage.

Ru Xiu looked radiant, unlike her previous sickly and timid appearance. Her delicate oval face was now much fuller and more beautiful.

"Pingzi and Taozi: These are snacks, you can take them and eat them." Pingzi saw that his second aunt hadn't touched them, and Taozi was very tempted and swallowed her saliva, but she didn't dare to take them. She just gently called out "Auntie".

"Aunt Xiu Niang isn't an outsider, so just eat it since she gave it to you. Take it and go play over there." Only after Aunt Xiu Niang spoke up did the two children happily take a small piece, then run to the side and nibble on it slowly, as if afraid of swallowing it whole.

"Second Aunt, what's wrong? Is there anything I can do to help?" Ru Xiu asked, putting the fish down.

"Sigh, no one can help us. It's even worse than what you were in back then."

"Caifeng's parents-in-law died of illness, and they sold their last bit of land. They have many brothers, and the vegetable plots they were given were not even as big as mine. Their house is also dilapidated and about to collapse. It seems they won't survive the winter."

"The son-in-law is thinking of leaving to make a living elsewhere, so he came to say goodbye." Auntie Er thought for a moment and wiped away another tear.

"Do we really have to go out? What about Caifeng and the two children? Should we take them with us? They're still so young."

"Life outside is probably not peaceful either." He's never left home and is unfamiliar with the place. He has no relatives or friends outside, so it's hard to say how he might die.

"What can we do? The vegetables and sweet potatoes here can last for two months, but it's not a long-term solution." Even someone as cheerful as Auntie couldn't bear to see her only daughter in this state.

"Then let's stay here for now. There's always a way. Let's think of something together." Aunt Caifeng and Aunt Xiao were both quick and efficient, and Uncle Li was also a hardworking man. Ruxiu thought that as long as they were willing to work, they wouldn't starve.

"Second Aunt, don't you always say that the vegetables I grow are delicious? Sweet and crisp. Today, the manager of Baixianglou really liked the vegetables I carried to sell. He offered five copper coins a pound and signed a contract with me to buy them. But I can't grow that many. I wonder if I could ask Caifeng to help you plant vegetables on your whole plot of land. Then we can haul them together. You can buy whatever price Baixianglou offers. I won't take any extra."

"Such a good deal? When did vegetables become so expensive?"

"Isn't it because I grow vegetables well? Even you praised me. No matter what, we can just use more fertilizer and water to grow the vegetables better."

There's a small pond next to my second aunt's plot of land, just enough to water the vegetables. If all else fails, Ruxiu can occasionally add some spring water, and the vegetables should grow about the same as in the backyard.

It is human nature to repay a drop of kindness with a spring of gratitude.

"Really? That's wonderful!" Mr. Li and Caifeng felt as if they had been given a new lease on life, their eyes regaining their vitality. Who would want to leave their hometown if they weren't so desperate?

Mr. Li still looked timidly at his second aunt, afraid that she would disagree.

"That's all we can do for now," Second Aunt sighed.

"Second Aunt, let's have dinner at my place tonight. I bought two fish and some meat, and I wanted to discuss something with you." Perhaps she could help Li's son-in-law and Caifeng, and also solve her own urgent problem. Ruxiu thought of raising chickens and fish.

During this time, Ruxiu seemed like a different person. She had come up with many ideas, which her second aunt noticed. If she could really resolve her daughter's problem, it would be a blessing for her.

"Alright, alright, alright. Seeing how thin and bony those two children are, it breaks my heart. I'll come to your place for fish and meat." Auntie finally smiled and picked up the fish.

"Take the children's clothes over too. Let them take a bath there tonight, so they can keep each other company with Sister Shi and Brother Le." Auntie's house only has two rooms. The other room only has a small bed, which must have been where Caifeng lived before she got married. I guess there wasn't time to clean it up today.

Upon seeing their second aunt's family, the children happily greeted them as aunt and uncle.

Ge'er is the least shy of strangers. Taozi is only a little taller than her. She grabbed Taozi's hand and called her to go see the chicks that had started to molt. No matter how many times I told her that she was the older sister, she wouldn't change her address and kept calling "Taozi, Taozi". It was so funny.

Le Ge then pulled Pingzi into the house, it was unclear whether they were there to learn to read or to hug a doll.

"Mommy, we found five eggs today!" Peach and Ge'er returned with their hands full of eggs. Three of them were small, somewhat like quail eggs. The three half-grown chickens, only a month old, had also started laying eggs.

"Ruxiu, I think you are very lucky."

My chickens used to never grow big, but lately they've grown so much they're practically inflating. We can't even finish all the eggs. I guess it's all thanks to you.

"Auntie, please don't praise me. People say I'm a jinx to my children and husband."

"Look at who's doing better than you now. You're living a smooth life, and you look much more radiant."
