Adorable Kids in Space: Lucky Wife is So Carefree
Chapter 16: Making dumplings caused a huge commotion.
It was a rare treat for the whole family to take a nap at noon, and everyone looked refreshed and radiant after their rest.
Ru Xiu kneads the dough. Besides dumplings, she also makes a lot of steamed buns after dinner. She needs to make sure there are enough steamed buns and rice for tomorrow. Sixth Aunt and the others will come over early in the morning to help. After eating, she will have to clean up. She needs to provide three meals a day.
To keep Xi Ge from getting lonely while he lay in bed all day, everyone simply placed the table at the entrance of the west room so that they could see him while making dumplings.
With the three little ones actively participating, things got chaotic. Even Auntie Er's efforts to roll out the dough couldn't keep up with the speed at which the three little ones caused trouble, and Ruxiu was in charge of cleaning up the mess.
"Mommy, oh, little bunny!"
"Who would dare eat the bizarre-looking bun that Brother Le makes? Haha!"
"Yours aren't as good as mine; the filling is all on the outside."
"Ge'er's bunny doesn't have ears!"
"Mommy, I'll give you seven."
"Second Aunt, look, Erdede has covered me in powder again."
"Haha, doesn't it look like a big tabby cat?"
"You're so naughty, you're bullying me."
Brother Le, who's neither too young nor too old, joined in the silliness for once.
"Oh dear ancestors, this flour is very precious, be careful not to spill it."
"If you don't stop, you'll be eating vegetable porridge tomorrow."
"Second Aunt, Erdede is naughty, eat porridge."
“Ge’er is the naughtiest, so we won’t give her any food.”
Unlike the two younger ones who made a complete mess, Sister Shi wrapped up the best items, just like her—neat, orderly, and not wasteful at all.
Because of the three kids' active participation, the dumplings turned into a pot of porridge. Luckily, the dumplings they made were cooked separately in one pot, otherwise we would have had to eat several large pots of porridge.
However, no one complained, since dumpling porridge was much tastier than meatless dumpling soup.
The three little ones ate with great enthusiasm.
"Next time I want to wrap a big black bear, and make it all black with ink."
"I'll make flowers and add chicken feathers."
The adults all agreed, so who would dare to eat dumplings next time?
"My stomach is going to burst." After eating a big bowl and adding two more dumplings, Brother Le leaned back with a contented and satisfied expression, pounding his stomach.
"I want to eat it all and save it for tomorrow." Ge'er is also a little foodie at heart.
"I wish I could eat like this every day." Brother Xi reminisced with great satisfaction.
"Seven dumplings, tomorrow Dede will give birth to a big dumpling."
"Hahaha."
All the leftover dumplings were steamed and will be eaten tomorrow.
Ru Xiu boiled two large pots of water, and added half a bucket of extra spiritual spring water from the space. Everyone had to wash themselves thoroughly tonight so they could wear new clothes tomorrow.
With the big bathtub, taking a bath couldn't be more convenient. Sister Shi was in charge of carrying the water. Ru Xiu first helped Xi Ge wipe his body, then washed the two little monkeys, and then tossed them to play with Xi Ge. They couldn't be allowed to cause any more trouble.
Sister Shi will definitely say she'll help make steamed buns, and that I can wash them later.
The dough rose more than three times more than usual. With Sister Shi's help, it was much faster. Moreover, Sister Shi cut the dough pieces to be just the right size and very even. She also kneaded the steamed buns to make them tall and round. My second aunt was responsible for putting each batch into the steamer and steaming them. By the time we finished making them, they were almost ready to be steamed.
Everyone tried another steamed bun, and a few of the younger ones, craving fried dumplings, ate two each.
Let Sister Shi take a bath first. Ru Xiu saw that it was too dark, so she lit an oil lamp and escorted Second Aunt back home, adding a lot of spiritual spring water to her water tank.
Sitting in the bathtub, Ru Xiu felt like she was dreaming. Since transmigrating, she had been spinning like a top without stopping. She hadn't thought about how to plan her life and was completely clueless. Oh well, she had to take things one step at a time. With four children by her side, the spiritual spring water by her side, and a 21st-century soul, she figured she couldn't do too badly.
Sixth Sister and Tang Li arrived at the appointed time of Mao Shi (5-7 AM) almost simultaneously, while Second Aunt arrived even earlier. Fortunately, Ru Xiu had the foresight to give Second Aunt a key to the front door. Second Aunt was sleeping so soundly that Ru Xiu didn't even notice her waking up until she knocked on the door. Ru Xiu was surprised that people in this era knew how to tell time, and she didn't see any timer in their house. Ru Xiu thought: I should check if they sell hourglasses in the city another day, and maybe I should buy one.
They started boiling water, sat together and ate two steamed buns, but it was still dark. Aunt Qin and Aunt Ba, who were doing needlework together, also came over to help.
My second aunt gave them two steamed buns and then dragged them to the west end to ask for ducks. It was a bit creepy to see them all alone in the pitch black.
As dawn broke, the pork and fish arrived. The pig's head was washed and immediately put into a large pot to boil. Tang Li-shi chopped the chickens and ducks cleaned their throats with ease, showing she was a capable person. After scalding them in hot water for a few rounds, several people quickly plucked the hair, gutted and cleaned them. Sister Shi and Brother Le got up when they heard the noise and greeted them sweetly, helping to wash the vegetables. They didn't even have new clothes to wear, but they were in very good spirits.
Sixth Aunt and her husband brought over the table, chairs, bowls, and chopsticks with their two children. Little Qiu, who is only two years old this year, was still carrying her little stool and wouldn't let go, swaying back and forth, which was so cute.
Ru Xiu sent the two children away to change their clothes. When they came out, all three children looked radiant in their new clothes. The bruises on their faces were gone, and they looked much fairer. They were so beautiful. Their task for the day was to take good care of the little guests.
After piercing the pig's head with chopsticks and finding no blood, several people carried it to the octagonal table in the main room. In ancient times, pigs were raised for more than a year, and the pig's head alone weighed dozens of kilograms.
Sixth Sister and Tang Li helped set out candy, melon seeds, and steamed buns, and poured wine. Second Aunt was a widow and felt it was inappropriate to help with these things. Ru Xiu, with her modern mindset, had no taboos, but it's no wonder others wouldn't think of it. Besides, she herself was a reincarnation, so she'd rather believe it was true!
Ru Xiu burned three incense sticks, called her three children over, kowtowed together, and burned paper money, which was considered a way to comfort their parents, if there really is a spirit.
Tang Zijie arrived first with his two sons and two nephews, followed by Tang Li's family and children. The children all ran off to play together, and the two grown men helped chop chickens, ducks, and fish much faster.
Zhu Tou Ru Xiu had them cut four large bowls of meat, and the rest had the men chop it into twenty pieces of roughly the same size, bones and all, to be returned as a gift.
After all that, it was past noon. We heated up two plates of dumplings, cooked half a pot of chicken blood and leek soup in meat broth, and gave each child two steamed buns. We had a hearty lunch, and the children happily played and frolicked like they were in kindergarten. Ge'er and Xiao Qiu ran around with them, while Shi Jie followed carefully, afraid that they might slip and fall.
After resting for a while, Second Aunt started measuring rice and cooking, Sixth Aunt and Ruxiu were in charge of stir-frying dishes, and the others started setting up tables and bowls, one table in the main room and three tables in the courtyard.
Several men went to the main room to drink tea and chat. In ancient times, most men did not go near the kitchen.
Braised pork belly with potatoes, stir-fried chicken with mushrooms, stir-fried duck with ginger, sweet and sour fish, stir-fried chicken (duck) giblets with bok choy, boiled pork head meat, crispy peanuts, chicken blood soup with chives, and two stir-fried green vegetables.
The table was overflowing with food, with plenty of meat. The rice and steamed buns could only be placed in the pot and steamer. In those days, most families would only serve meat slices according to the number of people when a daughter was getting married. The gifts were usually a few kilograms of rice, ten eggs, or five or ten coins. I had never seen anything so extravagant.
