chapter eight
Realizing I had touched a nerve, I pulled myself back to reality, looked at the candy in my hand, and with a cold face, threw it straight into the trash can.
Out of sight out of mind.
The next day, when I went out, I found the living room in a mess, with broken glasses scattered on the floor. Just as I was about to leave, the door to the master bedroom opened.
My mother came out of there with a red and swollen face, and immediately started cursing at me.
"Why didn't you come out yesterday? Did you want him to beat me to death? Zhou Nanzhi, how can you be just like your father, heartless and ungrateful?"
Looking at the bruises on her face and the burn scars on her arms from cigarette ash, I showed no expression.
One is willing to hit, and the other is willing to be hit. What can she do? I'm too weak right now; it's already good enough that I can protect myself.
"Mom, do you still love him?"
I stared at my mother. She seemed surprised by my question, her expression blank for a few seconds before she glared at me fiercely: "What do you know? I've known your father since we were little. Your father is just..."
As my mother finished speaking, she choked up. I was deeply moved and was about to go up and say a few words of comfort when I saw her glaring at me with disgust, her voice filled with deep hatred: "Zhou Nanzhi, why aren't you a man? If you were, I wouldn't have to suffer so much. It's all your fault. Why are you alive? Why do you make me suffer? Before you were here, my relationship with your father was very good. It's all your fault. Why don't you just die!"
My mother grew angrier and angrier as she spoke, and finally grabbed an empty wine bottle from the side and threw it at me. Caught off guard, I was hit hard and felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. I cried out in pain.
The wine bottle fell to the ground and shattered, showing how much force was used.
The flying glass shards splashed onto my pants, but luckily I was wearing long pants.
I watched her go crazy with cold eyes, but my heart remained remarkably calm.
"Zhao Fang, does my dad know you cheated on me last night?"
My words instantly froze her in place. A look of surprise flashed across her eyes, but she quickly snapped and threatened, "What nonsense are you spouting? What do you know? If you dare tell your dad, I'll never forgive you!"
Hearing her roar, I really wanted to argue back, but thinking that I still had to stay at school for two more weeks, I forced myself to hold back and softened my tone: "Mom, don't worry, I won't tell anyone about this. Actually, I want you to be happy. Since you have someone you like, just divorce Dad. He's not good enough for you."
I saw my mother standing there, stunned, and then I left and went to school.
As soon as I entered the corridor, I saw Gu Jinghuai leaning against the wall with a gloomy face. When he saw me, he stormed over.
I don't know what's wrong with him, but having known him for so long, I know he's angry.
Looking back on this period of time, I realized that I hadn't angered him. Soon, his tall figure loomed over me.
A cold, emotionless voice rang out from his mouth: "Zhou Nanzhi, apologize to Song Yuan."
I was completely confused, but seeing the people he was protecting crying and sobbing behind him, I didn't understand what was going on, but my heart sank.
"Why?"
I glanced coldly at Song Yuan.
"Jinghuai, don't be like this. Don't scare Nanzhi. Maybe she didn't mean it. Let's talk things out. There are so many people here. It's not a good thing."
Song Yuan choked up, her gaze towards me filled with silent condemnation.
Looking at the triumphant smile in her eyes, I felt a surge of anger. I clenched my fists tightly, wondering what had happened.
Suddenly, Gu Jinghuai grabbed my wrist, pulled me in front of Song Yuan, and ordered me in a cold, unquestionable tone: "Apologize."
"Before you ask me to apologize, shouldn't you tell me what happened first?"
I suppressed my disgust, shook off his hold, took a step back, and kept my distance from him.
"Do you really want to humiliate yourself in front of so many people?"
Gu Jinghuai looked at me coldly, his tone impatient.
"Please, get to the point, I'm in a hurry."
I frowned. A crowd had already gathered around me, including Song Yuan's girlfriends, all with their arms crossed, ready to watch the show.
Gu Jinghuai was taken aback for a moment upon hearing my words, then looked at me with displeasure. After a long while, he finally reacted, frowning and saying, "Can't you be a little more polite?"
"Do I need to be polite to you?"
I gave a light sneer, my eyes indifferent.
"How dare you ask?"
Song Yuan's friend stood up for her: "Yuan Yuan just wore a necklace yesterday, and it's gone today. If I remember correctly, you were the last one to leave last night. We found it in your desk. How else do you want to explain this?"
“I told you she came from a mountain village, that she was dishonest, and that she would do anything for money.”
As I listened to the voices around me, my face paled. This was clearly a frame-up, yet Gu Jinghuai believed Song Yuan without a doubt.
"There are surveillance cameras in the classroom."
My voice was hoarse and barely audible. To them, it seemed like I was scared because I had been caught stealing, but actually I was just resentful.
I blame myself; I must have been blind in my past life to waste my time falling for someone who is both blind and heartless.
"Stop pretending. Everyone knows the security cameras in the classroom were broken the day before yesterday."
Song Yuan's friend looked at me with disdain, her tone contemptuous.
I looked at this group of idiots and said in a nonchalant tone, "If the ones in the classroom are broken, are the ones in the hallway broken too? Can any of you prove that no one else passed by last night besides me?"
As I said this, my eyes were fixed on Song Yuan. Soon, I noticed that her expression became flustered, and her hands nervously clutched the hem of her clothes.
Compared to me now, she is indeed a bit naive; a single sentence was enough to expose her weakness.
Gu Jinghuai, who was beside her, naturally noticed that something was wrong with her. His eyes narrowed and his face became even more gloomy.
"No need, it's such a small matter, there's no need to bother the teacher. Besides, the necklace has already been found, I think we should just let it go."
Song Yuan looked nervously at Gu Jinghuai, hoping that if Gu Jinghuai nodded, the matter could be dropped.
Watching the interaction between the two, I spoke first before Gu Jinghuai could, my tone playful: "How can this be left unresolved? The school values the atmosphere the most. If there are petty thieves or people with malicious intentions who bully classmates in the class, I don't think the homeroom teacher will stand idly by. Besides, the college entrance examination is just around the corner. If someone's college entrance examination results are affected because of misunderstandings or isolation from the school, can you bear the responsibility?"
My words almost brought up Song Yuan's name. My classmates aren't stupid. Although they don't like me, this country girl, they also despise Song Yuan, who is two-faced.
"Maybe I remembered wrong, so let's not bother the teacher. Besides, the college entrance exam is just around the corner, and the teacher has a lot of things to do."
Song Yuan looked at me pleadingly, hoping this matter would end here, but I didn't want to tolerate it anymore. If this matter wasn't investigated thoroughly, I wouldn't be able to have any peace and quiet for the next two weeks.
I looked at her with a cold smile and said seriously, "Song, if you really remembered wrong, why did you pretend to be deaf and dumb when they were slandering me just now? Don't blame me for overthinking, I also think that you orchestrated this whole thing yourself."
Just as the group was at an impasse, the homeroom teacher walked over from a distance. He looked at the students gathered in the corridor and, upon closer inspection, realized they were all from his own class. His face immediately darkened.
Seeing that the homeroom teacher was about to launch into a long and rambling lecture, I quickly and deliberately recounted what had just happened, word for word, including all the slanderous things my friends, Song Yuan and her friends, had said about me.
