Chapter 68
Zhou Yong sat down grumbling. A little while later, the waiter brought over two bowls of noodles. I didn't eat any; I placed them all in front of Zhou Yong.
"Are you hungry? Eat more."
I had no appetite when facing Zhou Yong, so I simply didn't want to eat and gave him everything.
Zhou Yong glanced at the noodles, his face showing displeasure, but in the end he said nothing, gave me a deep look, and then lowered his head to start eating.
They slurped and ate with great relish, and even ordered two more eggs and a beer at the end.
After eating and drinking his fill, Zhou Yong rubbed his round belly, stared at the scrutinizing fish tail, and asked sharply, "You really don't know where your mother went?"
"I don't know, and you know I came here right after the New Year. I need to find a job beforehand, otherwise how can I take care of you and give you a better life?"
I spoke softly and adopted a humble posture, trying to absolve myself of all responsibility.
"You better not be lying to me, or if I find out, don't blame me for being rude to you."
I was already used to Zhou Yong's threats, so I lowered my head and pretended to be obedient.
"I need to stay in Lincheng tonight. Can you find me a five-star hotel?"
Zhou Yong held the wine glass in one hand, downed the last sip of wine in one gulp, and looked at me with a flushed face and thick neck, his posture arrogant and commanding.
I knew his nature all along. I glanced at the sky and said directly, "It's very late now. I've booked a hotel for you nearby. You can go there directly. The location is excellent, close to places to eat, and easy to find. You won't get lost."
I put on an act of selflessness, and Zhou Yong gave me a satisfied look.
As we left the restaurant and passed a bar, Zhou Yong stopped and glanced at us. I pretended not to see him and continued walking.
Soon, Zhou Yong caught up, cursing and swearing, his tone unfriendly: "Walking so fast, in a hurry to be reborn?"
I listened to him without saying a word and led him all the way to the hotel.
"Okay, here's the room key."
I handed him the hair clip.
Zhou Yong continued to curse: "I've walked so far, I'm exhausted! You're such a grown man, don't you know how to be considerate? Couldn't you have called me a taxi?"
Looking at his appearance, I cursed him inwardly for being pretentious.
Zhou Yong looked at the magnificent hall, glanced at it with satisfaction, and stepped inside without caring at all whether it was safe for me to go back so late or whether the school had a curfew.
I gave a bitter smile, gripped my phone, turned and left, returning to my lodgings.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw that the living room was completely dark. I was suspicious for a moment, then subconsciously turned on the light by the door. There was a person sitting on the sofa, which startled me.
Gu Jinhuai noticed the blinding light and instinctively closed his eyes. After a while, he opened them again, noticed me at the door, and slowly moved his gaze over. His voice was hoarse as he said, "You're back."
Hearing his slightly nasal voice, I subconsciously walked over, gave a curt reply, and went straight into my bedroom.
The intense gaze behind me didn't disappear until the door was closed.
I took a deep breath, grabbed a change of clothes, and came out of the bedroom. As soon as I came out, I glanced at the sofa out of the corner of my eye, but no one was there.
I went to the bathroom, and half an hour later, after changing into my bathrobe, I came out and saw Gu Jinhuai drinking water in the kitchen.
I glanced at it and was about to leave when Gu Jinhuai called me back.
"Zhou Nanzhi, I need to talk to you."
I paused in drying my hair, looked at him, and then Gu Jinhuai walked over to me, took my hand, and sat down on the sofa.
In the moment I was stunned, Gu Jinhuai took the towel from my hand and placed his other hand on my head.
Long, slender fingers ran through my hair, applying gentle pressure, and with the movement of the towel, they lightly brushed it aside.
I sat there blankly, my hands gripping my robe tightly, my fingertips red, my back stiff, not moving for a long time.
It wasn't until Gu Jinhuai stopped what he was doing that I came to my senses. I didn't know when Gu Jinhuai had been standing in front of me, looking down at me.
With my back to the light, under the incandescent bulb, I stared blankly at Gu Jinhuai's indistinct outline, momentarily lost in thought.
As the man's handsome face drew closer, his warm breath falling on my face, I held my breath, leaned back, and asked in a trembling voice, "What do you want to do?"
Gu Jinhuai stared at me with a serious expression, his voice cold: "Don't move."
I instinctively stiffened, remaining completely still, my eyes fixed on him.
The next moment, Gu Jinhuai reached out and removed the hair that was stuck to my cheek.
"It's cold, let's get some fresh air, it'll help us rest better tonight."
As Gu Jinhuai spoke, he took out a hairdryer from the drawer and prepared to dry my hair.
Seeing his actions, I reached out and blocked his arm, my dark eyes coldly fixed on him: "What did you want to say? Please just say it."
"Is this what I'm supposed to do?"
Gu Jinhuai held my hand down and said in a low voice, "Don't move."
Immediately afterwards, I heard the hairdryer whirring, and in that instant, my heart was racing.
"All right."
After a while, Gu Jinhuai turned off the hairdryer, and the living room suddenly became quiet. The man's voice was deep, but his nasal tone was as heavy as ever.
"Thank you, I will reimburse you according to the shampoo shop's pricing."
I politely stood up and was about to take out my phone to transfer the money to him. I thought he would subconsciously get angry and refuse, so I planned to transfer it directly via Alipay. But to my surprise, Gu Jinhuai took out his phone, deftly opened the WeChat QR code, and his service attitude was excellent: "Scan the QR code with WeChat, 180 yuan."
I listened to his words, my eyes wide with shock: "What did you say? One hundred and eighty? Are you robbing me?"
"I'm worth this price."
Gu Jinhuai waved his phone and gestured with his chin at me.
"I think your service is worth the price!"
I quickly scanned the code and paid only half the price.
"Cut it in half, that's pretty ruthless!"
Gu Jinhuai raised an eyebrow slightly, his voice carrying a hint of mockery.
"Take it or leave it; if you don't want it, give it back to me."
When I argue, my cheeks inexplicably turn red, and my eyes reveal displeasure and anger.
"Alright, first time is fine. Remember to come find me next time."
Gu Jinhuai waved his phone at me and then turned and left.
During that time, I heard him sneeze, but I didn't pay attention. I went back to the bedroom, glanced at the pen and paper on the table, and subconsciously walked over to try again. But half an hour passed, and the paper on the table was still clean.
I frowned, finally threw the pen on the table, and sat down in the chair, looking dejected.
The next day, I got up early and went to school. I had plenty of time, and the morning passed quickly. I didn't have any classes in the afternoon, so I went straight home.
As soon as I got home, I heard a thud. I quickly glanced around the living room and kitchen and found no one there. Then I looked towards Gu Jinhuai's bedroom and saw that the sound was coming from there.
I instinctively walked over and knocked on the door, but no one answered. My mind raced with all sorts of terrible thoughts, and just as I was about to break down the door, it clicked open.
When I looked up, I saw Gu Jinhuai with a flushed face, looking listless and dejected.
"Is something wrong?"
Gu Jinhuai's expression was languid, his voice hoarse and slightly breathy. He gripped the doorknob tightly, as if he wanted to lean against the edge of the door frame.
"It's okay, are you okay?"
I asked a question instinctively.
"Care about me?"
Gu Jinhuai chuckled, raised an eyebrow at me, and said in a slightly amused tone.
"You're overthinking it. I'm just afraid that if you die here, it will implicate me."
For a moment, the air was silent. I met the man's dark and deep eyes, my eyes flickered, and I wondered if I had gone too far with my words.
Just then, the man's face suddenly loomed close in front of me, his eyes staring straight at me with a deep affection I couldn't decipher. For a moment, I didn't know what to do, and my words stammered, "You... what do you want to do?"
