Chapter Six
Gu Jinghuai pondered for a moment, then suddenly asked, "How many do you want?"
I paused for a moment, then blurted out before I could think: "Five hundred thousand."
Upon hearing this, a hint of surprise flashed across Gu Jinghuai's eyes, and he sneered, "You dare to ask for it."
I smiled and said nothing.
Just then, Song Yuan's voice came from not far away.
"Jinghuai, could you help me put this necklace on?"
Song Yuan appeared in front of me, and I looked at the necklace in her hand, feeling that it looked somewhat familiar.
Oh, I remember.
It was a gift from Gu Jinghuai after we got married. Although it was an older style, I always liked it because it was the first gift he ever gave me. I cherished it, and I still wore that necklace around my neck until the day I died.
It turns out that Song Yuan didn't want it.
I stared blankly at the two of them, my heart aching as if pierced by needles again, making it hard to breathe.
I don't know how I left. When I got home, the house was pitch black. I didn't turn on the lights, but turned on my flashlight and went straight to my bedroom. As I passed the master bedroom, I heard strange noises coming from inside.
My ears turned red. I quickly walked past, went straight back to my bedroom, closed the door tightly, and leaned against the door to calm myself down.
In my past life, my mother couldn't stand my father's emotional abuse and beatings, so she had an affair. But that man wasn't a good person either. One day, when it was just the two of us at home, he tried to do something to me, but luckily Gu Jinghuai came and saved me.
I am still very grateful for that.
But in this life, I only have myself, and I can only rely on myself.
Nothing happened that night, but because the soundproofing was poor, I could always hear the mother screaming and the man enduring sounds from next door.
I was feeling irritable and stayed up until dawn. I got up early to pack, grabbed my backpack, and quietly left. I left in a hurry, and to avoid unnecessary trouble, I didn't even have time to eat breakfast.
As soon as I entered the classroom, I saw a lot of classmates gathered around Song Yuan's desk, their eyes fixed on the necklace around her neck.
Well, he's showing off again.
I walked to my seat, and before I could even sit down properly, I heard her girlfriends start making sarcastic remarks.
"Tsk tsk tsk, Yuanyuan, Gu Jinghuai is so good to you. This is a new design by Xinhai. Gu Jinghuai actually spent a fortune just to make you smile. You and him are a perfect match, a match made in heaven. Some people should also face reality. An ugly duckling can never become a golden phoenix."
"That's right. In the whole class, Yuanyuan is the only one who is worthy of the Gu family's status. She and Gu Jinghuai are childhood sweethearts. I heard that Gu has already received an admission letter from a top university in the capital. He still came to school, clearly just to be with Yuanyuan."
I couldn't help but chuckle at their words and ignored them.
The college entrance examination is a huge watershed moment. Four years later, who will even recognize whom?
I ignored him and focused on my studies. When the bell rang, everyone returned to their seats, and the area next to me was empty again. I thought he wouldn't come, but to my surprise, Gu Jinghuai appeared again.
I only glanced at him before looking away. Gu Jinghuai was as arrogant as ever, but he had the right to be arrogant. Even if he slept in class, the teachers wouldn't say anything because he could still get first place even if he didn't listen to the lectures.
During class, Gu Zi, who was sitting in the back seat, suddenly threw me a small piece of paper. I was stunned for a moment, then opened it and saw the words on it.
[Nanzhi, do you really not like my brother anymore?]
【Um. 】
Without the slightest hesitation, I quickly wrote a word with my pen, and then, taking advantage of the teacher's inattention, I threw the crumpled paper to Gu Zi.
After not receiving a crumpled paper from Gu Zi for a while, I began to concentrate on the lecture. However, the man who had been sleeping with his eyes closed suddenly opened them and stared at me with deep eyes. I noticed his intense gaze, pretended to be calm, and continued to listen to the lecture.
Suddenly, Gu Zi's note flew from behind again, but this time it missed and hit Gu Jinghuai directly in the face.
He frowned unhappily, and my heart tightened. I glanced at Gu Zi behind me and saw the fear in her eyes, knowing that she didn't mean it.
Instinctively, I reached out to grab it, but the next moment, a large, well-defined hand held the crumpled paper and slowly opened it.
I thought about what was written inside and stopped trying to steal it.
I kept an eye on his reaction and suddenly felt the temperature drop. The man's face darkened. I moved my lips but didn't say anything more.
The next moment, Gu Jinghuai tore the unfolded paper ball into pieces with a ripping sound.
With a screeching sound, the chair legs scraped against the ground, and his tall figure stood up and left the classroom without saying a word.
Everyone was shocked by his sudden outburst, but considering his bad temper, no one said anything. Even the teacher was only stunned for a moment before continuing the lesson.
Gu Jinghuai did not return, but Song Yuan's gaze lingered on me, her eyes filled with displeasure.
After class, Gu Zi kept apologizing to me.
Soon, Song Yuan walked towards me, and her girlfriends surrounded my desk with their arms crossed, looking like they were there to interrogate me.
"Didn't you say you didn't like Gu Jinghuai? Why did you go back on your word? What did you write that made Gu Jinghuai angry and caused him to leave halfway through?"
"Zhou Nanzhi, you're two-faced! Have you no shame? You're just a country bumpkin, and you think you can rise above your station and become a phoenix?"
"Alright, don't say that. I think she didn't do it on purpose. Maybe we misunderstood. She must have her own reasons."
Song Yuan's eyes were red, and she looked like she had been wronged.
"Shut up, all of you. I wrote the note. If you have any complaints, come at me."
Gu Zi's protective mother hen-like demeanor made me want to laugh.
"Alright, let's not argue with someone who's mentally challenged. The next class is about to start. Since you're so worried, hurry up and go find your sweetheart. Be careful he might do something rash and jump off a building."
I glanced at the delicate little white flower indifferently, then sat down and lowered my head to read.
Song Yuan bit her lip, a hint of disgust flashing in her eyes, but she still ran out. Everyone else knew who she was going to see, so no one chased after her.
Anyway, this isn't the first time. Before, someone from the neighboring No. 2 Middle School had a crush on Song Yuan and wanted to pursue her, but Gu Jinghuai chased and beat him for three blocks.
They had all seen his ruthless demeanor; no one could see Gu Jinghuai without feeling intimidated.
Sure enough, Song Yuan didn't come back after class started. I gave a cold smile and focused on the lesson.
During the lesson, I felt a sudden discomfort in my stomach and instinctively clutched it to try and ease the pain. However, the pain only intensified, and fine beads of sweat began to appear on my forehead. Eventually, I hunched over, unable to concentrate on the teacher's lecture, and felt a wave of dizziness.
"Zhou Nanzhi, what's wrong?"
This class happened to be taught by our homeroom teacher, Mr. Wang. He noticed something was wrong with me and asked me what was wrong.
I staggered to my feet, the pain leaving me weak. My mouth was slightly open, but I couldn't say a word. Everything went black, and I fainted.
I don't know if it was just my imagination, but I heard a ringing in my ears, and I thought I saw the figure from my past life rushing towards me.
"Zhou Nanzhi, what's wrong? Wake up!"
Gu Zhi's crying rang in my ears. I could feel that I was being held, but I couldn't see the person's figure clearly. However, I could still smell the cool mint scent on the man.
