Chapter 49

I watched the man walking towards me under the light. He was wearing a black overcoat with a white sweater underneath, and his expression was unreadable in his dark eyes.

In a daze, he was already standing in front of me, coldly watching the man running towards me. His expression was indifferent, and the powerful aura he exuded instantly overwhelmed me.

"Why are you running away? Most of us came all the way here to find me, it's just because we owe... uh..."

Before the man could finish speaking, Gu Jinhuai kicked him to the ground.

In the brief moment I was stunned, Gu Jinhuai had already kicked me several times in succession. His expression was cold and hard, and he exuded a murderous aura that made people afraid to approach him.

Looking at the man on the ground who had just been wailing, now barely breathing, I was terrified that Gu Jinhuai had beaten him to death. This scene felt like it took me back to my high school days.

For Song Yuan's sake, he beat up the thugs next door who frequently harassed her, sending them to the hospital. He was disciplined by the school for this incident, becoming a celebrity at the school and a synonym for school bully.

I snapped out of my reverie and quickly walked over to stop him from continuing to hit people.

"Gu Jinhuai, that's enough. If you keep hitting him, you'll kill him."

I grabbed his arm, but the man didn't budge and continued kicking at the man.

I was furious and seeing that I couldn't hold him back, I hugged his waist tightly and said in a trembling voice, "Gu Jinhuai, calm down."

I have this strange feeling that he is really standing up for me, and my eyes involuntarily well up with tears.

Finally, Gu Jinhuai calmed down, regained his aloof demeanor, lowered his eyes to look at the man slumped on the ground, and said in a cold and ruthless voice: "Go home."

After saying that, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me away.

I subconsciously looked up at him. I'm not short among girls, I'm 1.7 meters tall, but Gu Jinhuai is a head taller than me, 1.9 meters tall, so when I looked up I could only see his sharply defined jawline.

I turned around worriedly to look at the man lying on the ground. I could only see him lying there, motionless. Before I could see him clearly, a large hand grabbed my neck, turned my head, and said in a cold, domineering voice, "Don't look!"

When I felt his fingertips touch my cheek, they were slightly cool. I instinctively flinched, my back stiffened, and a feeling of resistance rose in my heart.

"do not move."

The man gave a low growl, put his arm around my shoulder, pressed my head down, and shoved me into the car.

We drove back to the hotel in silence. The car came to a smooth stop, and neither of us got out. In the quiet atmosphere, I turned to look at Gu Jinhuai, my voice tinged with displeasure: "So you didn't stop me just now, and were already following behind me, watching me make a fool of myself?"

"What do you think?"

He seemed dissatisfied with what I said, and his eyes revealed anger as he looked at me.

I didn't say anything, but he still pulled me back to the hotel. I struggled a bit, but Gu Jinhuai crossed his arms, looked at me, and said indifferently, "Besides here, where else can you go?"

Instantly, I deflated and he pulled me back to the suite.

He's right. After living in Beijing for so many years, home is only where my grandmother is. But since she passed away, my parents have had constant conflicts. That home has long been destroyed for me, like a quagmire that I've always wanted to escape from.

"Sleep in the bed, no refusing allowed."

Gu Jinhuai pulled me onto the bed, then turned around and went back to the sofa. Instead of resting, he sat on the sofa with his laptop, looking focused.

The next day, Gu Jinhuai was gone again when I woke up. I didn't see him for three days in a row. One afternoon, Gu Zi contacted me, and we planned to go to Laojun Mountain together.

As soon as I arrived at the door, I saw Gu Zi roll down the car window and wave at me.

"Zhizhi, over here."

I looked at Gu Zi, who was beaming with joy. I hadn't seen her for half a year. She was wearing light makeup and had her hair tied in a high ponytail, which made her look very energetic.

I adjusted the scarf around my neck and walked towards her.

"Zhizhi, sit in the back."

Gu Zi winked at me. I was slightly surprised, but I didn't think too much about it. As soon as I opened the car door, I found Gu Jinhuai sitting upright with a laptop on his lap, looking focused on something.

After a while, I didn't get in the car. The cold wind from outside blew into the car, and the man subconsciously turned his head to look at me and said, "Get in."

I paused for a second, then bent down and sat down, deliberately keeping my distance from him, as if there were a Chu-Han border between us.

As soon as I entered, I looked ahead and saw a foreigner sitting in the driver's seat. He was handsome with regular features and deep eyes, especially his deep blue eyes, which looked like an endless deep sea. His skin was also very fair.

"Zhizhi, let me introduce you. This is Moss, a friend I met abroad."

After Gu Zi finished speaking, she started introducing me. I nodded to Mo Si, and we pretended to be acquainted.

I didn't expect that Gu Zi's friend would know Gu Jinhuai, otherwise they wouldn't be riding in the same car.

"Zhizhi, you haven't had breakfast yet, have you? Here, take this."

As Gu Zi spoke, she handed me the tote bag. I thanked her and took the breakfast from her.

As soon as I opened the lid, I saw a steaming bowl of congee with preserved egg and lean pork, its aroma filling the air. Immediately afterward, I noticed Gu Jinhuai's gaze on me. I instinctively turned around and our eyes met. My hand, which was holding the congee, paused, and my lips moved, but I didn't ask the question.

I lowered my head and ate my porridge. Fortunately, Gu Zi kept trying to find topics to talk about with me. I mostly listened, and Mo Si responded from time to time, so the atmosphere in the car wasn't too awkward.

As for Gu Jinhuai, apart from glancing at me once while I was eating, he didn't pay attention to anyone the entire way, nor did he say a word; his eyes were fixed on the computer screen.

Once the car was on the highway, I looked out the window at the gray sky, my vision gradually blurred, and I finally fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes, I was wearing a black overcoat. I looked at the familiar overcoat and then looked at Gu Jinhuai next to me. The man was sitting with his legs crossed, leaning back in his chair, resting with his eyes closed.

I was curious and took a few more glances, but to my surprise, Gu Jinhuai was very wary and suddenly opened his eyes to look at me.

His deep eyes were somewhat bewildered, but his gaze gradually sharpened and became imposing. Only when he saw that I was sitting next to him did he withdraw his sharp gaze.

I watched him lean over, and instinctively shrank back, my back against the corner. The man's handsome face was close to mine, and he stretched out his arm. In my panic, he rolled down the car window, and the glass slowly rose, shutting out the cold air from outside.

I then realized that the car window had been slightly ajar at some point, probably because I had accidentally bumped it while I was fast asleep.

The man sat back down in his seat, his expression cold, and my heart calmed down as well.

After a long pause, the man lowered his voice and said, "Lock the car windows."

Gu Zi, who was in the front passenger seat, witnessed everything through the rearview mirror. Her eyes met mine, and she gave a meaningful smile.

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of my mouth; Gu Jinhuai's actions just now had caused another misunderstanding.

I was too lazy to explain. I just heard a click, and Moss, who was driving, obediently locked the car window.

Gu Jinhuai relaxed and leaned back in his chair, pretending to doze off.

In winter, the ground was covered in ice and snow, so we didn't drive too fast. When we passed a service station, Gu Zi pulled me into the service area to use the restroom.

As soon as we came out, Gu Zi dragged me to buy food. I heard that the prices were almost twice as expensive as usual, so I pulled Gu Zhi to leave.

"I've prepared some food. If you're hungry, we can eat in the car."

"But I think this tastes delicious."

Gu Zi's eyes lit up as she pointed at the yogurt cake in the cabinet, reluctant to leave, wishing her feet were glued to the ground.

I pulled for a long time without success. Just then, Song Yuan's voice came from behind me: "Gu Zi, what a coincidence! You want to eat this? I'll buy it for you."
