Chapter 41
"Um……?"
I looked at him in confusion, and after a moment of stunned silence, I realized that he was asking me a question.
I nodded immediately, but Fu Yiran spoke up, "Nanzhi, go back and rest. I can handle things here."
Fu Yiran's tone was gentle, like the spring sunshine.
"No need, I happen to be free these days and can take care of it."
It's holiday time, and I don't want to go home so early. The school is closed, and although I have a place to stay, I'll be all alone. I'd rather stay with these little animals.
Finally, after my insistence, Fu Yiran relented.
"Mr. Gu, aren't you leaving?"
Fu Yiran's gaze fell on Gu Jinhuai, and my gaze followed.
The man's face was expressionless, but he exuded a powerful aura. His dark eyes held a sharp edge, and he didn't speak, instead staring at me.
I felt uncomfortable being stared at, so I asked Fu Yiran to leave first, and then went to take care of the cats and dogs, ignoring Gu Jinhuai.
By the time I finished my work, it was already 10 p.m. Gu Jinhuai was still there, but instead of standing, he was sitting on the sofa, looking down at his phone.
Noticing my gaze, the man suddenly looked up, his eyes meeting mine.
The man stood up and walked towards me. His tall figure loomed over me, and I instinctively tried to back away, but he grabbed my wrist.
The man's voice was deep and hoarse: "When did you find this job?"
"We haven't seen each other for months," were the first words Gu Jinhuai spoke.
"Not long ago."
Overwhelmed by his imposing manner, I had no choice but to obediently answer.
"Change jobs."
The man's tone was forceful, and his words were spoken calmly, making it seem as if he wasn't trying to discuss things with me, but rather giving me a direct order.
Feeling disgusted, I immediately retorted, "Why should I?"
Finding a job these days isn't that easy.
who do you think You Are?
I mentally complained, but Gu Jinhuai seemed to read my mind. He glared at me with cold eyes and said in a calm tone, "This was found for you by Fu Yiran. Do you know his relationship with the store manager?"
Without thinking, I blurted out, "I know, he's related to the store manager."
Meeting my clear eyes, Gu Jinhuai's lips twitched, and finally he flicked her forehead hard. I winced in pain, glared at him, and said unhappily, "What are you doing?"
Gu Jinhuai was amused by my appearance and chuckled softly, but his words were like a thunderclap, splashing water in my heart: "He and the store manager are mother and son."
"Mother and child?"
I looked at Gu Jinhuai with surprise, a hint of doubt in my eyes.
"Could you be mistaken? And even if they are mother and child, what does it have to do with you? You should leave now and stop causing me trouble."
Although I was surprised, I knew that Fu Yiran must have had his reasons for not telling me.
I tried to push Gu Jinhuai out, but just as we reached the door, he grabbed my hand.
The man's fingers were icy cold, which sent a shiver down my spine.
"Zhou Nanzhi, do you really want to get rid of me like this?"
Gu Jinhuai's voice was icy cold, and his gaze toward me was frighteningly cold.
"I need to rest. How can I rest if you don't leave?"
I instinctively shrank my neck, trying to break free from his hand.
After a long pause, the man gave me a deep look, released my hand, and turned to leave.
I watched his steady steps as his figure gradually disappeared into the distance, took a deep breath, then pulled down the gate and locked the door.
I huddled on the sofa, covered myself with a blanket, and made do for the night. I never expected my body to be so weak. The next day, I found my nose was blocked, and I couldn't speak clearly. My voice was hoarse and unbearable.
My head felt dizzy and I had no energy.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw Fu Yiran walking over with breakfast in her arms.
"You came so early?"
I had a smile on my face.
To my surprise, Fu Yiran frowned as he listened to me speak: "You're sick. It's been cold these past few days, and the shop hasn't turned on the heating yet. If I had known, I should have stayed yesterday."
Hearing the self-blame in Fu Yiran's voice, I said softly, "If you stay, can you guarantee you won't get sick?"
"You eat breakfast first, then go to the hospital today. I'll watch the shop."
Fu Yiran walked in carrying breakfast.
"No need, it's just a minor problem, it'll be fine in a few days."
Just as I was about to close the door, I caught a glimpse of a low-key black Maybach parked steadily across the street, which looked a lot like Gu Jinhuai's car.
Suddenly, I had a bad feeling.
The next moment, just as I was about to close the door, Gu Jinhuai walked in carrying some things.
When he saw Fu Yiran busy at work, his face darkened completely.
The man's gaze fell on me, and I instinctively shivered, quickly averting my eyes.
Gu Jinhuai's murderous gaze made me fear that he would fight with Fu Yiran. Given his recklessness, Fu Yiran would be the one who gets beaten up.
"Nanzhi, let's eat."
At this moment, Fu Yiran looked up and saw Gu Jinhuai's figure, and the smile on her face faded a bit.
"Mr. Gu, you're here. Would you like to have something to eat together?"
"Okay."
Before I could refuse, Gu Jinhuai had already pulled out a chair and sat down. Looking at me standing there dumbfounded, the man's voice was cold: "Come here."
Before my mind could process it, my legs had already reached the four chairs. My instinct was to get as far away from Gu Jinhuai as possible.
The man seemed to sense what I was thinking and coughed lightly. In the end, I obediently sat down next to him.
Only after the man looked away did I feel the air become more plentiful and the oppressive feeling on my body lessen.
With Fu Yiran present, I couldn't say anything offensive to Gu Jinhuai.
"Nanzhi, have a xiaolongbao."
Fu Yiran chose simple breakfasts, such as wontons and steamed buns, which are my favorites.
I happily accepted it, dipped it in vinegar and chili, and was about to open my mouth to eat when Gu Jinhuai snatched the steamed bun from my hand with his chopsticks.
"what are you doing?"
I glared at him angrily and watched as he opened his mouth and stuffed the xiaolongbao into it.
"Are you going to ruin your voice eating spicy food like this?"
The man's tone was cold.
I choked on my words, glared at him fiercely, and retorted in a low voice, "None of your business."
She immediately shut up when she noticed the man's gaze sweeping over her.
That's just how he is. He's extremely possessive and has a lot of rules. We've been married for five years, and you have to listen to him on everything, big or small. You can't say no to him.
"Since my voice is already like this, I don't mind it getting worse."
I said coolly, and looked down to drink the wontons, but Gu Jinhuai stopped me again.
"It's too oily, you can't digest it well, so eat this."
Gu Jinhuai snatched the wontons away and pushed a bowl of pumpkin porridge in front of me.
I was furious. I quickly picked up a small steamed bun, dipped it in chili and vinegar, opened my mouth and ate it, chewing quickly and swallowing it.
I ate a lot of chili peppers just now to vent my anger, and it's burning my throat.
I held back my cough, my eyes red and swollen. Finally, when Gu Jinhuai looked over, my eyes welled up with tears, and I coughed a few times in a low voice.
"Cough cough cough..."
"Nanzhi, are you alright? Have some porridge."
Fu Yiran frowned, her eyes filled with self-reproach.
"Deserved it."
Gu Jinhuai frowned, his face darkening.
I hunched my shoulders, took a sip of porridge, and only then did my throat feel a little better.
"Nanzhi, are you alright?"
Fu Yiran looked at me with a worried expression and a concerned tone.
"It's okay, don't blame yourself, your food is delicious."
I glanced at the wontons sitting next to me out of the corner of my eye, wanting to scoop up a spoonful to try, but Gu Jinhuai seemed to see through my thoughts and said in an icy tone, "You dare to try eating one."
"None of your business, I..."
Before I could finish speaking, Gu Jinhuai's large face appeared in front of me.
I instinctively stepped back to keep my distance from him.
"Eat yours."
After uttering those three words, Gu Jinhuai began to drink the porridge in his bowl, leaving the bowl of wontons aside.
I watched the wontons that were about to clump together. Several times, I tried to sneak a bite when Gu Jinhuai wasn't looking, but I didn't succeed.
I was dissatisfied, but I didn't want to make things too awkward in front of Fu Yiran, so I suppressed my temper and buried my head in my porridge.
But they discovered that the porridge tasted the same as the one Gu Zi had brought from home when they were in high school.
In high school, I rarely ate breakfast. Gu Zi would always bring her lunchbox to school so I could eat with her.
I looked at Gu Jinhuai, a new suspicion forming in my mind.
To verify, I looked at him and asked, "Where did you buy this porridge?"
