A Post-Apocalyptic Journey to Another World

Chapter 59 No Retreat, No Advance

At the foot of Maling Mountain, a chaotic and fierce battle is unfolding, with gunfire, the explosion of grenade launchers, and the howls of wild animals filling the air.

Xue Gang's expression was extremely solemn. After realizing he was being followed, he had set up a trap in advance, luring the other party into walking right into it, turning them into a sitting duck.

However, Xue Gang hesitated to act. He had only brought a little over fifty men, with nearly half of them scattered across Maling Mountain. They lacked heavy weapons. Even with only twenty-odd men, a firefight would be enough to wipe out the hundred or so idiots in his pocket. But it would certainly alert the orcs, wiping out the reconnaissance teams on the mountain and potentially killing those below.

He immediately ordered all reconnaissance teams on the mountain to retreat, but he hadn't expected the enemy commander to be such a ruthless and decisive person. He had so quickly made the decision to perish together; once the gunfire started, the battle would spiral out of everyone's control.

A soldier on the perimeter spoke to Xue Gang through the walkie-talkie: "Battalion Commander, I'm on the left flank of unidentified armed groups. A pack of black wolves, driven by werewolves, is attacking their makeshift position. Should I take advantage of the chaos to eliminate their forces? Please advise!"

“No, you provide sniper support from a distance to help them hold out a little longer. I need to use them to draw more orcs away, creating an opportunity for the reconnaissance team still on the mountain to retreat.” Xue Gang calmly ordered, “You yourself must be careful. Fire and move around. If you are discovered, retreat immediately!”

"Understood!" the soldier replied. "However, Battalion Commander, their tactical skills are very poor. They won't last long, and it looks like they're going to escape."

"Don't worry, they can't escape. I've cut off their retreat. They only have two choices: either continue to hold out or take our bullets!" A rare ruthless expression appeared on Xue Gang's face.

……

Faced with more and more black wolves and werewolves behind them, Huang Hansheng felt increasingly desperate. That bastard Xue Gang changed the direction of the ambush formation the moment the gun went off, and led his men to bypass him and expose him to the front line of the battle with the orcs.

Huang Hansheng was also an outstanding graduate of a military academy. Before deciding to fire, he gave the same order as Xue Gang. Both sides wanted to go around behind the other. The difference was that Xue Gang was accompanied by veteran soldiers who had been through many battles, while Huang Hansheng was accompanied by a group of thugs who could only bully the old, weak, women and children and were fond of fighting in the streets.

It goes without saying whose tactical intentions will be better executed!

After one of the escapees sent out for the third time was shot in the head, Huang Hansheng gave up his plan to attack Xue Gang's defenses. However, he discovered that although Xue Gang had blocked his retreat, he had not shot him in the back, otherwise they would have been dead long ago.

Not only that, the people surrounding his flanks would also provide him with fire support. Huang Hansheng immediately understood Xue Gang's purpose, and a glimmer of hope flashed in his eyes: "This Xue Gang really does love his soldiers as rumored. He can't bear to part with the people still left on the mountain! He hopes that we can hold out a little longer and leave a chance for the people on the mountain to survive! However, a merciful general cannot command an army. Xue Gang is one of your weaknesses."

Although unwilling, Huang Hansheng rallied his spirits and led his men in a full-scale battle against the orcs. His back was now completely exposed to Xue Gang, which would have meant certain death, but now he had discovered a glimmer of hope. If he could stall for time, he could find a chance to escape. The two groups, each with their own ulterior motives, reached a strange compromise on the battlefield, and humanity's defenses were temporarily stabilized.

Xue Gang's efforts finally paid off. Most of the investigation teams, which had not ventured deep into Maling Mountain, had returned within this short period of time.

Xue Gang checked and found that ten people were missing, including Long Wenzhang, Zhang Xi, and Xu Liang. He felt a sudden pang of heartache. Most of those who hadn't returned were highly skilled in reconnaissance and infiltration, and had gone too deep. In such situations, the more outstanding a person was, the harder it was for them to escape. Each of these dozen or so men was one of his most admired and beloved soldiers.

Xue Gang contacted the dozen or so soldiers one by one again, but only Long Wenzhang and Xu Liang responded. It turned out that Long Wenzhang and Xu Liang had already been discovered. Xu Liang, relying on his speed, carried Long Wenzhang and fled. For a while, the golden-maned lion-men couldn't catch up with him. However, his speed was still different from those monsters. In the end, he was forced to jump into the river, but he was swept away by the swift current and had already reached the downstream.

Xue Gang contacted the other people again, but there was no response. He felt heavy-hearted and called Zhang Xi several more times, but there was still no reply.

The situation was extremely critical. Golden-maned lionmen had appeared among the charging orcs, and evacuation was imperative. Xue Gang gritted his teeth and gave the order: "Attention all groups, take turns providing cover during the retreat. The first group and I will stay here! Hold on a little longer and buy the other groups more time to disengage from the battle."

The team members carried out Xue Gang's orders swiftly and without making a sound. Because everyone had left their grenades and grenade launchers to the first group before the retreat, the firepower was not diminished at all. It wasn't until the first group had thrown all their bombs and started to withdraw that Huang Hansheng realized something was wrong.

He immediately took a few trusted men and escaped from the group in the chaos. With the commander gone, the human defenses quickly collapsed. As soon as a gap appeared in the firepower network, the orcs broke in and tore it apart.

……

During his retreat, Zhang Xi encountered the same trouble as Long Wenzhang and Xu Liang. A gunshot rang out from below the mountain, and the orcs swarmed away, gathering near the foot of the mountain in such large numbers that it was impossible to sneak back. After several failed attempts, Zhang Xi suddenly remembered one of his treasures, and an idea formed in his mind. Then he climbed back up the cliff to the platform he had just been on.

By this time, the thirty-odd orcs on the platform had already left to cause trouble for the humans down the mountain, leaving only five bronze-rank and two silver-rank orcs. Zhang Xi, through his observation, had discovered that this small camp was led by a silver-rank orc shaman. The other two silver-rank orc warriors were the shaman's guards.

Orc shamans are the wise men among orcs. Although orcs are a type of human, their general intelligence is not high. However, some young orcs are blessed by the totems of their orc ancestors from birth. These blessed young orcs are more intelligent, and as they grow older, they will gradually awaken the shamanic magic buried in their blood.

The orcish tribes' command structure at all levels was almost entirely formed by shamans. It is well known that every spellcaster is a treasure trove, even orc shamans who rely on bloodline magic; they themselves are a small treasure trove.

Zhang Xi's target was this silver-rank orc shaman. Fortune favors the bold, and today he was going to make a small fortune off this orc shaman.
