A Post-Apocalyptic Journey to Another World
Chapter 29 The Alpha Wolf
The reconnaissance battalion of over 300 men surrounded the town government building, while the militia battalion organized the surviving civilians to evacuate to the main urban area. Road widening and demolition also proceeded smoothly. When several self-propelled artillery pieces finally arrived, the general offensive began.
The self-propelled artillery's heavy cannons used close-range direct fire to bombard the building's pillars and load-bearing walls.
But things didn't go as planned. After the smoke cleared, people discovered that although the load-bearing wall was riddled with holes, the main supporting structure remained intact. The pillars, which would take many people to encircle, were even more sturdy, having only suffered minor damage!
Long Wenzhang exclaimed in surprise, "So sturdy! Even if we emptied all our ammunition, it might not collapse!"
Li Liansheng looked at his country bumpkin squad leader with disdain and said, "What's so strange about that? Haven't you seen the news? Every earthquake causes houses to collapse and schools to crumble. When have you ever heard of a government building being damaged by an earthquake?"
"Alright!" Xue Gang interrupted them. "Now is not the time to criticize current affairs. Change to incendiary bombs and explosive bombs, and fire them straight in through the windows on each floor to burn them out!"
The incendiary bombs were incredibly powerful; after only a dozen or so shots, the entire building was engulfed in flames. The intense heat, thick smoke, and lack of oxygen in the inferno were unbearable even for a monster like a black wolf. One after another, black wolves leaped out from every door and window, pouncing on the humans who were already on high alert.
Interspersed among the black wolf pack were fire wolves, which were actually dire wolves. Like trolls, dire wolves fear fire; their half-rotten bodies are covered in grease, a natural accelerant.
The desperate black wolves appeared even more ferocious and crazed. They lined up in a single file, attempting to shorten the charge distance by using the lives of their brethren at the front. But they faced overwhelming crossfire, and the alpha wolf's scheme was destined to be futile.
Zhang Xi did not join the ranks of those slaughtering the black wolves. Instead, he carried a 'Xiongfeng III' man-portable missile and moved to the back of the line, silently waiting for his target.
The Hsiung Feng III missile has multiple guidance methods, making it a nemesis of low-altitude aircraft such as helicopters and low-altitude drones. Of course, most of these guidance methods are specifically designed for aircraft.
In this environment ablaze with flames and teeming with humans and black wolves, Zhang Xi couldn't possibly expect his missiles to track down a single black wolf, even if that wolf was much larger than the others.
Zhang Xi was drawn to the power of the 'Hsiung Feng III' missile; it was the most versatile and powerful individual weapon available to him. He had already decided to use the 'Hsiung Feng III' as a rocket launcher, disabling all guidance mechanisms.
Canines are among the most numerous of all wild magical beasts, and Zhang Xi has spent the most time interacting with them, knowing their habits inside and out. For example, right now, he can almost predict from which position the alpha wolf will break out.
The black wolves in the government building soon poured out, with five giant wolves at the back of the pack, each twice the size of an ordinary black wolf. Although these five black wolves tried to keep their bodies low, their enormous size caused their backs to bulge high. They moved erratically among the wolves like sharks in the sea, looking for an opportunity.
These black wolves were very conspicuous, and the heavy firepower in the human defenses began to focus on them. While everyone's attention was drawn to these giant wolves, Zhang Xi kept his eyes fixed on a corner of the government building's rooftop: "They're here!"
Just as those giant wolves were drawing artillery fire from the pack, a huge figure suddenly leaped out from the roof of the town government building. It was a massive black wolf, a full 7 meters long, the alpha wolf!
The charging wolf pack attracted most of the attention, but a small number of soldiers noticed the alpha wolf leaping in mid-air. People raised their guns and fired; the soldiers of the reconnaissance battalion were all skilled shooters, and a dozen or so bursts of blood instantly erupted from the alpha wolf's body.
The alpha wolf was shot repeatedly, seemingly in terrible condition, but Zhang Xi knew that the beast had only suffered minor scratches. This was because it exuded the aura of a Silver-rank beast. While Silver-rank one and Bronze-rank ten may seem to be separated by a thin line, the difference is actually quite significant.
Although the Bronze Realm represents a level far beyond the ordinary, its strength, speed, and reflexes far surpass those of ordinary people. One can easily snap steel bars, smash boulders, and chase after a galloping horse on foot. Control over one's own body is also greatly enhanced, most directly manifested in shooting accuracy. Anyone who enters the Bronze Realm, with a little training, can become a sharpshooter.
Bronze is ultimately still within the realm of ** (likely referring to a specific element or mechanic), but once you enter the realm of Silver, you enter another dimension. The most obvious characteristic of the Silver realm is that elemental energy truly participates in both attack and defense.
A magnetic field naturally formed around the Silver-rank alpha wolf's body. The dumdum bullets fired by the soldiers, after breaking through this field, had their kinetic energy exhausted, barely piercing the wolf's skin before exploding. So, although every shot drew blood, it was essentially just a scratch. This was only because canines are inherently weak in defense, resulting in a fragile protective field.
The alpha wolf's powerful leap from its high vantage point covered an immense distance, landing over sixty meters away, having already crossed the first line of fire. The distance was so astonishing that the soldiers on the second line of defense were momentarily stunned and did not fire. A flash of red light appeared in the alpha wolf's crimson eyes; seizing the opportunity, it locked onto a medic behind the second line of defense and activated its innate ability, 'Charge'!
The alpha wolf, in its charging state, was incredibly fast, leaving a trail of black streaks in its wake. Its series of displayed abilities far exceeded everyone's expectations, except for one person.
Zhang Xi was waiting for the alpha wolf to launch its charge, because only during the charge would the alpha wolf be unable to dodge the attack. He set the lead time and pulled the trigger.
The Hsiung Feng III missile, its blue body trailing a faint blue plume, flew out. On the battlefield, a blue line and a black line met as if by prior arrangement.
The alpha wolf had already detected the missile aimed at it, but it was helpless; its speed was extremely high during a charge. To hit it under these circumstances, one would need to know when it would charge and its charging speed precisely. At that time, it was almost impossible for anyone to know that much about it. Little did it know that Zhang Xi had been fighting the black wolf for many years.
With a loud "Boom!", the missile struck the alpha wolf in one of its hind legs. Even so, it did not stop its charge until it knocked the medic away.
Only then did people realize that one of the alpha wolf's hind legs was completely deformed, and half of its tail had been blown off, making it look extremely pathetic. It glanced back at Zhang Xi, the culprit, and limped into a small alley.
Wolves are known for their vengeful nature, and the alpha wolf clearly held a grudge against Zhang Xi for that arrow. However, it didn't expect its chance for revenge to arrive so soon, as Zhang Xi had already dropped his firing gear, picked up a rifle, and given chase.
"Zhang Xi, let me help you!" Xu Liang followed closely behind.
Behind them was the reserve team led by Battalion Commander Xue Gang.
The reserve team stopped after chasing for less than 200 meters. After chasing for 100 meters, the leader and Zhang Xi had already disappeared, and now even Xu Liang was nowhere to be seen!
The fastest runners in the reserve were dumbfounded. Xue Gang, panting heavily, asked Long Wenzhang, who was also panting heavily, "What's going on with those two soldiers! Are they even human? They run faster than dogs!" He caught his breath and continued, "I can run 100 meters in eleven seconds with my rifle!"
Long Wenzhang replied, "He broke the world record, right? I estimate Xu Liang's speed is around eight seconds for a 100-meter dash with a pistol. As for Zhang Xi, he's long gone. Anyway, he's even faster!"
Xue Gang's expression turned serious. He said, "Connect with the drone and find their location. We must continue the pursuit. We absolutely cannot let these two die at the hands of the giant wolves! Hurry!"
