Chapter 9 Spring Chill

Qiao Ran was also tied up, tears welling up in her eyes, and her hair was also messed up.

"Qiao, don't be afraid," Qin Huai spat at Xie Laoshi, "What kind of person hits a woman? I, Qin Huai, despise that the most. Hit me then! Come on!"

As soon as Xie Laoshi raised his whip, Qiao Ran's large tears started falling. Her delicate body was so fragile that if the whip struck her, it would surely tear her skin apart.

Qin Huai shouted hoarsely, then called out again, "...Qiao."

Old Master Xie frowned deeply, staring at Qiao Ran for a long time, but for some reason he couldn't bring himself to whip her. Instead, he lashed out at Qin Huai in front of Qiao Ran.

Qiao Ran screamed and bit her lip until it bled.

She's the one who ruined Qin Huai.

Qin Huai finally couldn't hold on any longer and fainted. Qiao Ran was so anxious she wanted to eat someone alive.

At this moment, a servant came to report that the young master had woken up and that the tenth brother of the family should be summoned.

Xie Laoshi glanced at Qiao Ran, whose eyes were streaked with tears but who was glaring at him fiercely, and ordered, "Keep a close eye on her."

Qiao Ran turned to look at Qin Huai beside her, her tears flowing even more, and whispered, "Qin Huai? Qin Huai, wake up."

After Xie Laoshi left, the others stood around like wooden stakes, refusing to help Qin Huai no matter how much Qiao Ran begged for mercy. Qiao Ran secretly vowed in her heart that if she survived this ordeal, she would make sure these people stole even their underwear!

Qiao Ran didn't know how long she had been tied up, but her limbs were numb and her breathing was becoming increasingly difficult. Just as she was about to collapse, Xie Laoshi returned. Qiao Ran barely opened her eyes again, thinking that if he was going to kill her, he should do it quickly. This feeling of having a knife sharpened but hanging over her head for so long was making her feel like she was living a life worse than death.

The expected instruments of torture were not used on them. Instead, Xie Laoshi had them untied and ordered Qiao Ran to be taken away.

Qiao Ran looked at Qin Huai and asked, "What about him? What are you going to do with him?"

Xie Laoshi did not explain, but only said, "Take him away."

Qiao Ran wasn't locked up with Qin Huai. She was kept alone in a guest room in the villa, where she had food and sleep in a secluded and elegant environment, but she didn't know how Qin Huai was doing.

She tried several times to escape to find Qin Huai, but all attempts ended in failure. Xie Laoshi had people keep a close watch on her, with someone watching every five meters around the house, so she couldn't escape even if she had wings.

Qiao Ran was detained here for ten days.

Every day, a maid would come in on time to deliver the food. As soon as she put the food on the table, Qiao Ran would overturn it, spilling soup and water all over the floor.

"I'll go get you another one, Miss. Please wait a moment." The maid was not annoyed at all, but spoke very kindly, which confirmed Qiao Ran's suspicion that Chen Jiu did not intend to kill her.

She said, "Even if you give me ten more servings, I won't eat them. Tell your young master that I want to see Qin Huai."

The maid said, "Don't worry, Miss, Young Master Qin is fine."

"I don't believe it." Qiao Ran kicked away the food box and insisted, "I have to see it with my own eyes, otherwise I will go on a hunger strike. I suppose your young master is feeding me well and doesn't want me to die, does he?"

The maid was in a dilemma, but said politely, "Miss can't see the young master yet, let me go and get you another one."

Qiao Ran shouted, "Even if you change it ten more times, it won't work. I'll smash them all. Let me see Qin Huai. I need to make sure he's really alright."

After the maid left, she closed the door. No matter how hard Qiao Ran tried to push it open, she couldn't; the lock was on the outside.

The food on the ground still smelled delicious, but Qiao Ran had no appetite. Qin Huai had been so badly injured that day; if he had been left to fend for himself in this courtyard, he certainly wouldn't have lasted more than a few days.

Before long, the maid brought in steaming hot food again, but Qiao Ran didn't even glance at it and slammed it against the door, shattering the dishes all over the floor. For two days in a row, she truly kept her word, not eating or drinking a drop of water, and smashing countless breakfasts and lunches.

At mealtime again, Qiao Ran licked her dry lips and snapped, "Send more food! I'll smash it all if you bring it in. If you know what's good for you, get out of here!"

The door was pushed open anyway. Without looking up, Qiao Ran picked up a stool and was about to throw it. Just as she was about to drop the stool, the person in front of her, who was holding a food box, dodged and said with a smirk, "Heroine, don't hurt anyone."

"Qin Huai!!"

Qiao Ran put down the stool, went over and hugged him, her voice several octaves lower, and asked worriedly, "Are you alright? What did they do to you?"

Qin Huai sighed. How come he hadn't realized before that Qiao Ran was a real paper tiger? She seemed sharp-tongued and unforgiving, and imposing, but when it came to life-or-death matters, she would shed tears without restraint and was incredibly cowardly.

"I'm fine," Qin Huai said, turning around in front of Qiao Ran before placing the food box on the table. He then said, "I heard you were on a hunger strike for me, so I rushed over here. I was afraid you'd really get sick from starvation."

Qiao Ran sat down as well, her big eyes staring at him, her eyelashes fluttering, looking extremely aggrieved.

"Are you really okay?"

Qin Huai said, "I'm really fine. After I was taken away that day, they had a doctor treat my injuries. I've been recuperating these past few days, and they've been using the best medicines on me, so my injuries are healing quickly."

Qiao Ran was skeptical. "Really?"

"Really." Qin Huai handed over the chopsticks and smiled, "I feel bad for using such good medicinal herbs for free. I'm thinking of exchanging them for cheaper ones, but it would be better if I could exchange the expensive ones for silver."

Qiao Ran finally smiled slightly, "How's your injury healing? Does it still hurt? I'm the one who dragged you into this."

"Eat first, look how thin you've gotten from hunger," Qin Huai urged. "Don't talk about implicating me or not. I came to find you myself and that's why I got caught. It has nothing to do with you."

Although Qiao Ran was starving, she had no appetite. As long as she was sure that Qin Huai was safe, she would be at ease.

"How could it have nothing to do with me?"

"It's not like I've met Qiao Er. When did I become so sentimental? They've been taking good care of me with good food and medicine, and my injuries are almost healed. I'm enjoying myself. I've never lived like this before," Qin Huai said self-deprecatingly. "I wish my injuries would heal more slowly so I could enjoy myself for a few more days."

Qiao Ran took a bite of rice and said, "It's good that you're alright."

Qin Huai glanced at the door and lowered his voice, "It's strange, what's this young master Chen up to? One minute he wants to kill us, the next he's treating us like royalty. What's going on?"

Qiao Ran shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe the sickly person has some mental problems after being sick for so long."

Qin Huai: "...Then what should we do?"

"You should take good care of yourself. Once you're better, we should leave here as soon as possible," Qiao Ran said.

Having met Qin Huai, Qiao Ran was completely relieved and resumed her comfortable life in captivity. Before she knew it, half a month had passed, and the biting chill in Sichuan began to dissipate, making the villa even warmer.

Once outside this courtyard, it won't be long before you find yourself in a peaceful scene of spring warmth and blooming flowers. It's just a pity that Qiao Ran can't get out.

The villa was heavily guarded, and she and Qin Huai could not find a chance to escape.

There were footsteps of maids coming and going in the courtyard. Qiao Ran opened the window. The number of people guarding her had not decreased. Not far away, two maids were sitting lazily on the porch, playing with newly picked peach blossoms. The delicate branches made them look elegant and graceful.

One of them lowered his head and sniffed the blossoms, then said playfully, "We'll go to the back mountain and pick some more later, so we can make some peach blossom pastries for everyone to try."

The other person was more composed. He brushed a stray hair from his forehead and instructed, "Don't go out and wander around. The head guard just told us not to leave the courtyard casually. Besides... with the young master in this state, who would be in the mood to eat peach blossom pastries? Just be careful and do your job well. Hurry up and put away these flowers so the head guard won't be unhappy if he sees them."

"Isn't the young master feeling much better? I was thinking that eating some spring food would lift his spirits."

“Every bite that the young master eats must be strictly screened. How can he eat whatever he wants?” The more composed maid stood up and urged, “Hurry up and get to work. You need to get rid of this gluttonous habit.”

The younger, more mischievous maid pouted and said, "I understand."

Qiao Ran overheard their conversation. She couldn't help but sit by the window and think, "The young master in the villa is undoubtedly Chen Jiu. Is it because his illness has worsened?"

It's understandable that the Chen family would blame themselves for Chen Jiu's worsening condition, but what's the point of keeping them locked up like this?
