Chapter 63 Night Market

Cheng Kaiji called everyone into the room. Qiao Ran didn't sit down, but leaned against the corner by the window, listening to everyone talk about what happened that day.

Wu Yang sent Qiao Ran to retrieve the relic, but the wind and snow almost instantly blocked out all visibility. A hurricane even rose up on the slope, and the snowflakes became deadly weapons.

They fought the snow wolves that were not afraid of the storm and were soon at a disadvantage. Just as Wu Yang ordered everyone to evacuate, no one could find Qiao Ran. They only remembered that they had to shout to pass on the message and no one had seen Qiao Ran.

During the evacuation, the others who had come with them also arrived. Seeing that Tuoyue Pavilion was surrounded by snow wolves, they each had their own agendas and took the opportunity to snatch the snow soup. The snow soup was still soaked with the blood of the moon fox after giving birth. Their fierce struggle scattered the soup pool, and the snow wolves smelled the scent and suddenly went mad. Wu Yang was targeted by the alpha wolf and could not get away for a long time. Cheng Kaiji simply led the people on the hilltop down and everyone formed a circle to kill the wolf pack.

However, they were still outnumbered. The crazed snow wolf had become much stronger and ate many people. It seemed that they would not be able to escape. Da Yue and Lao Pi desperately held back the alpha wolf so that they could retreat first.

Wu Yang naturally refused, but the number of wolves on the snowfield kept increasing. Da Yue had half of his body bitten off by the alpha wolf, but he still roared loudly to tell everyone to leave.

They could only try to retreat, killing as they went, and walked towards a sheltered place. They stayed in a cave for a day and a night before the wind and snow gradually subsided. When they returned to Tangchi, they could no longer find any trace of Dayue and Laopi.

They packed up the snow soup and searched everywhere for Qiao Ran, but to no avail. Instead, they ran into Ying Yan.

Yingyan told them that Qiao Ran had been killed deep in the snowfield. Wu Yang was furious, and everyone fought fiercely with the Eagle Capture Gang. However, for some reason, Yingyan's power suddenly increased.

Tuoyue Pavilion had fought all night and was exhausted. Wu Yang was no match for Ying Yan and was seriously injured. They left the snowfield only after their lives were hanging by a thread.

After hearing the whole story, Qiao Ran hated herself even more for not killing Ying Yan on the arena. Perhaps sensing her thoughts, Cheng Kaiji reminded her, "Qiao Qiao, Ying Yan must die, not on the black market."

Qiao Ran lowered her eyelids. "I know," she said after a moment of silence. "If he's so capable, let him stay in the underground black market for the rest of his life and never come out."

Later that evening, Wu Yang woke up, and Qiao Ran went to see him. She sat with him for a while, and when she told him that her Bi Chan had passed the fifth level, Wu Yang was overjoyed. Despite his illness, he talked to Qiao Ran for a long time, asking her to pass on Bi Chan no matter what.

By the time Qiao Ran left the black market, the moon was high in the sky. She wandered aimlessly down the long street. In the distance, the sound of the night watchman's drum could be heard. Few people were out at night in Sichuan, and the streets were deserted. Qiao Ran kicked the pebbles under her feet, sending them flying far away along the street.

When a person has something on their mind, they feel as if they have lost their strength to walk. Qiao Ran belatedly realized that she couldn't walk not only because she had something on her mind, but also because she hadn't eaten all day!

Qiao Ran's stomach rumbled a few times, making her already depressed mood even worse. She stomped her feet hard on the ground in a fit of temper. When she looked up, she saw Chen Jiu's carriage stopped a few steps away. The horse was mimicking her and hooking its hoof backward. Chen Jiu was lifting the curtain with one hand, watching her with a mixture of amusement and helplessness.

Qiao Ran: "..."

Is her mind not working properly, and her hearing is failing too?

A carriage stopped in front of her, but she didn't hear a sound.

Awkwardly retracting her foot, Qiao Ran straightened up a bit and walked over slowly, asking, "Why are you still outside?"

What time is it? Chen Jiu should have been asleep long ago.

"Get in," Chen Jiu beckoned to her, and Qiao Ran quickly climbed into the car, which was warm and cozy inside.

He said, "I got into a fight in the black market today?"

Qiao Ran was surprised for a moment. Chen Jiu was familiar with the underground black market, so it wasn't surprising that he knew. She nodded and said sullenly, "I went a little too lightly. I regretted it all the way here."

Chen Jiu's eyes crinkled into a smile. "Have you eaten?"

He quickly changed the subject, showing no extra curiosity about Qiao Ran's private affairs. It felt like he was just mentioning it casually. He was more concerned about whether Qiao Ran was hungry than why she got into a fight.

Qiao Ran said, "No."

"I'll take you to a good place," Chen Jiu said to Xie Laoshi outside the car, "Let's go to Shili Lane to get something to eat."

Xie Laoshi answered "Yes," and the carriage turned a corner ahead, heading towards the Muslim Quarter.

Qiao Ran glanced at the high-hanging moon through the car window. "At this hour, is there still anything to eat in Shili Lane?"

"The dozen or so alleys are really lively right now, you'll see when we get there." Chen Jiu urged Xie Laoshi to hurry up, since there were no people on the streets at night and the carriage didn't need to control its speed, they would arrive at the Muslim Quarter in no time.

After coming down from the street corner, it takes a while to reach the innermost Shili Lane, a short alleyway that intersects at a crossroads. Qiao Ran only believed it when she arrived; Chen Jiu hadn't been making a fuss. The dozen or so alleys were indeed bustling with activity.

"We close during the day and open at night," Chen Jiu said, wearing a thin cloak to keep warm. He walked slowly beside Qiao Ran and told her, "It's a small alley, located at the very end of the Muslim Quarter. Outsiders usually don't know about it."

The aroma of various foods mingling in the air intensified Qiao Ran's hunger, and her mouth was practically watering.

Isn't this just a night market street hidden in the bustling city? It's full of all kinds of small vendors, pulling their homemade carts around the corners of the streets and calling out their wares.

Qiao Ran stood in front of the stall, unable to move her legs. Before she could even see what they were selling, a gentle voice came from the side: "Boss, one order of Four Happiness Meatballs, please."

"Alright, young master, just a moment, it'll be ready soon." The shopkeeper smiled kindly, taking out a bowl to serve the meatballs while chatting with the old lady next door.

Qiao Ran looked at the food at each stall as if she had discovered a treasure, and she had to buy one of the dishes she liked. After walking around, her belly was quite full, but she didn't spend a penny. Chen Jiu was with her, and he consciously acted as her money bag, spending money on Qiao Ran without complaint.

Although it wasn't much, Qiao Ran inexplicably felt extremely comfortable.

Qiao Ran didn't stop until she couldn't eat another bite. She turned to Chen Jiu and asked, "You actually accompanied me for so long. If Old Master Qu finds out, he'll glare at me to death."

Chen Jiu said gently, "Old Qu has been busy researching new prescriptions these past two days. He got the Moon Fox Relic and is so happy that he can't stop smiling even in his sleep. He thinks he can definitely cure me. He is too grateful to glare at you."

Qiao Ran smiled happily. Whether in her past life or this one, food always heals her. When she is feeling down, a stroll through the food street helps to dispel much of the gloom in her heart.

Unexpectedly, Chen Jiu easily figured out this little habit that only she knew about.

She patted her round belly as she walked out, still curious, "How did you end up on the street? If it weren't for the coincidence, I would have been narcissistic enough to think you came out to pick me up on purpose."

Qiao Ran thought that Chen Jiu probably had something to do and finished late, which is why it had been so long.

So when Chen Jiu calmly said, "I came out specifically to pick you up," she was instantly thrown into a panic. Her heart pounded and her scalp nearly stood on end.

What does Chen Jinzhou mean by that?

After she had eaten and drunk her fill, her mind started working much faster. Qiao Ran's thoughts began to wander again because of someone's simple words. She blinked at Chen Jiu, then suddenly looked away, trying to hide her wandering thoughts. "If I get back late, you can just have Zhou Mu or someone else come out and look for me. Why do you have to go out yourself in the middle of the night? It's so tiring."
