Chapter 6 Gathering and Dispersal

Qiao Ran entered Qin Huai's room, glancing back every few steps. Inside, a group of people sat around, all with somber expressions.

Hearing the news brought back by his brothers, Qin Huai was preoccupied. When he saw her come in, he said, "I have already told the others to evacuate first. They will go separately and reunite when it is safe."

I didn't discuss this with Qiao Ran.

Qiao Ran paused for a moment, her expression stiffening slightly, then nodded and said, "Okay."

The atmosphere suddenly became a little awkward.

The few remaining brothers nearby tried to mediate, "Hey, Second Boss...?"

"You guys should leave too." Qiao Ran interrupted, ordering curtly, "Stop dawdling, get out of the mountain now, listen to Qin Huai, and we'll meet up later."

Everyone looked at each other.

Qin Huai looked up and said, "Some people in the village have noticed something is wrong and have probably already contacted the government troops. Qiao Ran, you really didn't inform everyone beforehand about this kidnapping. We agreed not to provoke the imperial court."

This is Qin Huaili's rule.

Qiao Ran was used to doing things her own way and thought nothing would happen, but she didn't expect...

She pursed her lips. "It's my fault, Qin Huai. I'm sorry."

Qin Huai choked, "Do I need your apology? Qiao Ran, I know you have your own secrets, but I've never pried into them. Although we haven't known each other for long, who among us doesn't genuinely call you 'Second Boss'? This time!"

"This time, I was careless." A small band of thieves like Qin Huai would surely die if they encountered the imperial court. The reason they have been able to live peacefully all these years is because everyone is clear-headed. Qiao Ran broke the rules and even offended the prime minister. She bowed to everyone and said sincerely, "It was my fault that this has escalated. I shouldn't have dragged everyone into this. Qin Huai, you should take the rest of the men and leave the mountains now. It's a good time to leave Sichuan. The money you have is enough for you to rest for the winter."

Qin Huai frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Let's find a place where everyone can have a good time and enjoy themselves for a few months without any worries," Qiao Ran said. "After this storm passes, Qin Huai, you can lead everyone to find a way to make a living. That would be the best way."

Qin Huai jumped up. "Qiao Ran, explain yourself! What do you mean I should lead everyone away first? What are you still doing here?"

He admitted that in the past, no matter how cold the winter was, Qin Huai would have to work because his savings were not enough to support everyone. But this year was different. Every job that Qiao Ran and the others did was enough for everyone to get through the winter safely.

Qin Huai meant that the government troops might arrive soon, and it was still possible to withdraw now.

If we're going to leave, we'll leave together.

Qiao Ran hesitated for a moment, then slowly said, "But things have already escalated, and we haven't even received the goods yet. I'll wait a little longer."

Qin Huai slammed his fist on the table and said seriously, "We can't get the things from the imperial court, and even if we did, we wouldn't be alive to spend them, do you understand? Qiao Ran, if you want more money, you can get it anywhere with your skills, why do you have to lick blood off the edge of a knife?"

Qiao Ran didn't know how to explain to Qin Huai, so she frowned and said, "I don't necessarily want money, and I can't explain it to you anyway. Just go first."

"You want me to abandon you?" Qin Huai roared. "How could I possibly do that!"

Qiao Ran felt a bit cold from the wind blowing at the door, and the tips of her ears turned slightly red. She forced a smile and said softly, "Qin Huai, we were just strangers who met by chance, weren't we? Like you said, no one knows anything about me. Because of me, you've made enemies on all sides. The gathering of heroes in Shu this time was ultimately to punish me. Now, because you've offended the imperial court, I've brought you too much trouble."

Qin Huai's breathing became labored, and he couldn't speak for a long time.

Qiao Ran continued, "To be honest, I don't know if we'll ever see each other again after we part ways here, or even if we're planning to see each other again."

Qin Huai's hands trembled slightly. "Qiao Ran, are you serious?"

"We met by chance, and our meetings are destined to end." Qiao Ran said, "Thank you all for taking care of me during this time."

"Second in command..."

Qiao Ran: "Don't say anything more. I shouldn't have broken your rules. People like me are naturally averse to being restrained, and I'm bound to do a lot more reckless things in the future, so I won't involve everyone else."

Qiao Ran smiled slightly. She was all alone and fearless, but Qin Huai was different; he had a whole group of people to take care of.

The mere mention of the 'Spring and Autumn Annals' has already attracted the pursuit of soldiers from all over the city. If she were to obtain the 'Spring and Autumn Annals' this time and figure out the reason for her rebirth, and even try every means to return to her original place, who knows what kind of perilous path it would be.

She is the only one who can walk this path to the end.

She couldn't tell anyone where she came from; no one would believe her.

"Qiao Ran," Qin Huai said, his eyes reddening, "you were already planning to leave before you kidnapped the young master of the Chen family, weren't you?"

Qiao Ran nodded in agreement, "All good things must come to an end. We were never meant to be together."

Qin Huaihan felt a chill in his heart. "Thieves are not all the same kind of people. Then who are you on the same kind of people with? I thought we treated each other with sincerity."

They treated each other with sincerity, but Qiao Ran and this era were on different paths, so how could she possibly reach the same destination as the people of this era?

Lowering her eyes slightly, Qiao Ran urged, "Let's go first. With my skills, I'll be more capable on my own. I'll be fine."

Qin Huai stood still, staring intently at Qiao Ran, this mysterious woman he had only known for less than a hundred days.

Why should our brothers risk their lives for her sake?

"Until we meet again," Qiao Ran said first, her smile filled with determination.

Qin Huai paused, his voice hoarse: "Until we meet again."

Qiao Ran watched Qin Huai and his group carefully leave the village. The brothers were right; some villagers had indeed gone to lead the soldiers. When Qin Huai and his group left, several honest villagers tried to stop them, but Qin Huai was in a bad mood. He drew his sword, and the villagers made way for him.

Qin Huai glanced at Qiao Ran one last time, but Qiao Ran didn't move.

When the villagers saw that only one woman remained, they immediately began to whisper among themselves.

Chen Jiu listened intently to the commotion outside, wondering what kind of medicine the country doctor had given him last night. He had only tried anything to keep him going until now, and was just calculating when reinforcements would arrive when the door was pushed open again.

Chen Jiu remained seated on the edge of the bed, quietly watching the person who entered. He asked, half-guessing and half-probing, "Your companions have all left, what are you still doing here?"

Qiao Ran hadn't expected that the delicate-looking girl was physically disabled but not mentally challenged. She rolled her eyes and didn't answer him, instead introducing herself as "Qiao Er."

Chen Jiu realized what was happening and said, "What girl has that name?"

Qiao Ran sat down by herself. "I can call myself whatever I want, it's none of your business."

Interestingly, with the tension gone, Chen Jiu began to carefully examine Qiao Ran. She possessed a vibrant energy, an energy he had never been able to possess.

Humans are strange like that. Once you take life and death lightly, even if it's an enemy holding a sword to your throat, you can still feel a bit of envy for their beauty.

Chen Jiu asked kindly, "Are you really not leaving?"

Qiao Ran only said, "I want 'Spring and Autumn Annals'."

She had already alarmed the Prime Minister's residence, and she dared not return to the capital. If she couldn't obtain the Spring and Autumn Annals this time, she would have no chance in the future. She might as well take a gamble.

"Why 'Spring and Autumn Annals'?" Chen Jiu didn't ask her how she knew Spring and Autumn Annals was in the Chen family. The truth couldn't be hidden forever. It was likely that many people in the capital knew about this, but no one dared to ask the Chen family for it.

Qiao Ran laughed: "Who wouldn't want a treasure that can bring the dead back to life and heal the wounded? Young Master Chen, I'm a thief, born for treasure. Tell me, why would I want it?"

"To bring the dead back to life and heal the wounded..." Chen Jiu paused for a moment, then laughed out loud, her face becoming even more charming. "It's just an inanimate object, it doesn't have that much power."

With a "tsk," Qiao Ran didn't bother to explain. She patted her knees, stood up, and said, "Are you rested enough?"

"What?" Chen Jiu didn't understand for a moment.

Qiao Ran said, "Do you really think I'm stupid? I'm not sitting here chatting with you because I'm bored."

"..."

“I am concerned for your health, Young Master Chen, and I am afraid that you will die soon after you leave home. I want you to rest for a while so that I can take you on your journey.”

Chen Jiu was stunned and didn't know what to say.

"You were quite quick-witted just now, you should be able to hold out for a while." Qiao Ran said, reaching out to help, "Get up, let's go."
