Chapter 48 Insult
While Baili You was bathing and changing, Qiao Ran asked Xiao Zhuo to prepare a room for her, making a nest for the Moon Fox and its cubs, and putting the two little creatures in to raise.
The moon fox's wounds had almost healed, but for some reason its spirits were getting worse and worse, and it couldn't eat much. Qiao Ran even specially prepared some fresh meat for it, but it only ate a little bit. Except when feeding its cubs, it would crawl listlessly the rest of the time.
Qiao Ran didn't know what was wrong with it, so she reached out her finger to tease it, but it just lazily opened its eyes and looked around.
It doesn't seem to be doing very well.
Qiao Ran stroked Yuehu's fur and whispered to herself, "We've been through thick and thin together. We've come this far, so you have to be strong."
Xiao Zhuo peeked out from the doorway. Although he was in Yedu, he had never seen anything new or interesting. Curiosity prompted him to ask, "Young master, did you catch this fox? How come it's so obedient?"
Qiao Ran smiled at him, "It's my pet, so naturally it listens to me."
Xiao Zhuo was surprised to learn that people kept foxes as pets. She crouched down next to Qiao Ran to look at them, and couldn't help but feel envious. "The little fox is so well-behaved."
Qiao Ran corrected him, "Even the big fox is well-behaved."
As if understanding, the moon fox let out a soft cry, which made Xiao Zhuo's eyes light up.
"Young Master," Xiao Zhuo had just turned his head and called out to Qiao Ran, about to say something, when Liu Shu's panicked voice came from the courtyard.
"Your Highnesses, please forgive me. The Crown Prince is seriously injured and it is truly inconvenient for him to come out to greet you. Alas—Your Highness! Your Highness!"
Upon hearing this, Xiao Zhuo's face suddenly turned deathly pale, and his whole body began to tremble.
Qiao Ran slowly stood up. "The prince who used to bully your young master?"
Xiao Zhuo nodded fearfully, "Young master, please save my young master."
Qiao Ran stood still. Not only was she outnumbered, but the newcomers were also princes of Jin Chu, legitimate members of the imperial family. Her origins were unknown, and she couldn't afford to cause trouble.
So Qiao Ran continued to coax Yuehu to sleep, only frowning at the noise outside, without any intention of going out to show off.
Xiao Zhuo's eyes welled up with tears, and she could tell that Qiao Ran didn't want to help, so she took a step and ran out.
At worst, I'll get another beating. No matter how scared I am, I have to protect the prince.
"Go to sleep, sweetie." Qiao Ran pressed Yuehu's raised head back down and simply sat flat on the ground to listen to the sounds outside.
There were two different voices, both quite young, but they exuded an air of superiority and lawlessness. Qiao Ran guessed that it must be two princes who had come. Baili You had just returned to the capital, and they had already received the news and rushed over to bully him. They were really despicable.
It seems that few of the sons raised by the Jin and Chu emperors are intelligent. What's the point of having princes who don't think about how to distinguish themselves and recruit talented people to serve them? They're only focused on bullying a hostage from another country.
Perhaps because he found the house too shabby, the noble prince, afraid of getting his shoes dirty, refused to go inside and instead stood brazenly in the courtyard to insult Baili You.
"Tell your young master to get out here!"
Uncle Liu pleaded, "Your Highness, please spare my young master. Once he recovers, I will definitely accompany him."
"It's an honor for him to be invited to the banquet by His Highness, yet he's pretending to be sick here. He's always acting like a freak," the Third Prince mocked loudly. "Baili You, are you really not going to come out? You're going to offend His Highness!"
"Your Highness, this old servant begs you."
Hearing a "thump," it seemed Uncle Liu had knelt down, but this was immediately followed by a groan of pain and Xiao Zhuo's terrified scream.
"Third Brother, these two lackeys are such a downer every time. We might as well just kill them." It was another, even more arrogant and domineering voice.
The beating and kicking lasted for a while before stopping. Inside the room, Qiao Ran stared blankly, a fire suddenly igniting in her heart, burning the two contradictory figures within her to ashes.
They had all gotten up to get their swords, but Qiao Ran thought about it and decided to hold back.
She and Baili You were just strangers who met by chance. Once she found a way to get the travel documents, she would set off immediately and might never see him again in her life. When she returned to Daliang, she would probably forget everything here in just a few days, or even forget it completely. She couldn't possibly stay.
Since that's the case, she won't have any dealings with anyone from Jin and Chu, so why bother making trouble for herself? Anyway, it's none of her business. Baili You won't stop getting beaten up just because she intervened; this is his tragic fate.
Qiao Ran had no right to interfere.
Besides, she could fool the border guards, but she definitely couldn't fool these princes who took pleasure in bullying and humiliating Baili You all day long. They knew very well that Baili You still had several servants around him, and if they investigated her, it would be complicated for her to leave Jin Chu.
Qiao Ran calmed herself down and told herself, "Don't meddle in other people's business! Don't meddle in other people's business!"
Seeing that Baili You was still not coming out, the two princes in the courtyard frowned, kicked Uncle Liu aside, and said angrily, "I have to go in and invite you, Baili You! How can you still be so ungrateful? You really are a bastard from Pingjing!"
"Guards!" the Fifth Prince shouted. "Go and bring Baili You here. I want to teach him a lesson!"
Two servants immediately obeyed and went straight to the right wing of Baili. These servants knew the courtyard so well that they could find it with their eyes closed.
Uncle Liu and Xiao Zhuo hurriedly got up to stop them, but the Fifth Prince ordered two more people to restrain them.
"Fifth Brother," the Third Prince said with a grin, "didn't you hear what I said? Baili You is really seriously injured, isn't he? Could he have been injured while hunting with us?"
"Third Brother, you've reminded me. On our way back that day, we couldn't find that idiot Baili You anywhere. We waited for half an hour for nothing. I thought he had died in that forest. I didn't expect him to be so lucky and come back alive."
The two of them burst into laughter again.
Baili You was carried out of the house by his servants. He was injured and had been taking a long time to bathe. So when the Third and Fifth Kings came, he hurriedly climbed out of the bath tub. He didn't even have time to wipe the water droplets off his body. He was wearing a thin undergarment, the fabric of which clung to his body, faintly revealing his battered and bruised body.
The three kings and the five kings laughed even harder at the sight, causing the soaking wet Baili You to fall at their feet. They then stepped on his hair, which immediately became filthy from the mud on the soles of their shoes.
The Fifth Prince enjoyed seeing Baili You in a sorry state; the more disheveled he was, the happier he was. "Baili You, we came here specifically to invite you to the banquet, why are you in this state?"
The Third Prince teased, "Are you really going out looking like this?"
“It’s not impossible,” the Fifth Prince clapped and cheered. “We’re already late because we’re waiting for you. Anyway, it’s too late. If you just go to the banquet with Yong like this, I’m sure everyone will praise you.”
The two men sang in unison, making Uncle Liu and Xiao Zhuo's faces turn red with anger, but they were forced to remain silent and could only watch as their young master was humiliated to this extent.
The Third Prince spoke up, "What are you all standing there for? Carry our Prince Baili away!"
The servants pulled Baili You up from the ground again. His dripping hair covered his face, and his eyes, hidden in the shadows, were bloodshot. The venomous snake in his heart was snarling. He wanted to kill the person who had humiliated him, but he couldn't. He didn't even have the strength to stand up.
Like a dog without dignity, trampled on at will, repeatedly pushed deeper into the mud, one day it will be drowned.
Just as he was being dragged away, the air in the courtyard shook violently. A sword cry rang out from the heavens, piercing the eardrums and plunging heavily into Baili's right foot, the hilt trembling incessantly before finally settling down.
