Chapter 4 The incident happened

After narrowly escaping from Kyoto, Qiao Ran never returned. Although she kept inquiring about the massacre of the Qiao family, she could only obtain very little useful information. Moreover, she knew that she was now at least a wanted criminal and dared not approach Kyoto.

During her time on the run, she never lacked money. She passed through countless households along the way, all of whom were wealthy. She never stole from the poor; her professional ethics were impeccable.

According to her understanding, the place where she was miraculously reborn after her death was not the territory recorded in historical books. The land she was standing on was the Liang Dynasty, which had been peaceful and prosperous for more than 30 years. The current emperor was surnamed Li, and the government was enlightened and the people praised it.

After safely leaving Kyoto, she intended to settle down somewhere first before making long-term plans. However, by sheer coincidence, she kept seeing counterfeit goods being sold on the streets. When she saw vendors openly displaying Spring and Autumn Jade, Qiao Ran was stunned!

"Big brother!" Qiao Ran walked over in shock, picked up the deliberately aged jade, and asked, "What is this?!"

The stall owner, thinking Qiao Ran was ignorant, immediately began to deceive her, saying smugly, "You don't know this, young lady, it's divine jade."

God my ass!

Qiao Ran couldn't tell if it was real or fake, so she immediately slapped it hard and demanded, "What's this thing called?"

The stall owner was quite honest, saying, "Spring and Autumn Annals."

It truly is a 'Spring and Autumn Period'!

"Spring and Autumn, Heaven and Earth." This was Qiao Ran's last mission. The treasure she stole from the building was secretly escorted back from a top auction house abroad. Her sugar daddy wanted it and offered an astronomical price to hire Qiao Ran. Qiao Ran planned to disappear from the world after this job.

I really didn't expect that I would die for the treasure before even getting close to the Spring and Autumn Period.

Before going, she carefully studied the 'Spring and Autumn Annals', which is said to have been made from the stone left behind when Nuwa mended the sky. Over thousands of years, it has absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, developed divine power, and can bring the dead back to life, break through the cycle of reincarnation, and forcibly prolong life.

Qiao Ran didn't know whether it was true or false, and she never had a chance to find out before she died.

Unexpectedly, news of 'Spring and Autumn' came from here, and Qiao Ran's feelings were... indescribable.

The stall owner was from Kyoto. He had once heard a colleague describe this treasure in Kyoto. Since he was a jade replica craftsman, he figured that no one would recognize it anyway, and it was quite beautiful, so he made a replica and put it on display.

I never expected to run into Qiao Ran.

Qiao Ran adopted a show of spending lavishly, which prompted the stall owner to whisper, "It really is in the hands of the Prime Minister of the capital."

Qiao Ran raised an eyebrow.

Could her rebirth be related to the 'Spring and Autumn Period'?

That's too far-fetched. Could the legend be true?

With her decisive nature, she'd get her hands on it even if it was fake! She'd been wronged by this in her past life and was still feeling resentful. A gentleman takes revenge even after ten years, and Qiao Ran was determined to have 'Spring and Autumn'!

Just as Qiao Ran was pondering something while poking at the charcoal in the brazier, there was a knock on the door.

Qin Huai said from outside, "Qiao Er, Young Master Jiao is awake."

Qiao Ran stood up instantly, shook her head, took two steps to open the door, and met Qin Huai's big face. To be honest, Qin Huai was nearly twenty-five years old, a lonely old bachelor. When he was serious, he was quite good-looking and a good conman for young girls.

Upon seeing Feng Qiaoran, she shivered involuntarily. She clutched her chest tighter and squinted as she asked, "Finally awake?"

Qin Huai said sourly, "If he doesn't wake up soon, I'll really think this guy is dead."

Qiao Ran burst out laughing.

"Shall we go and see him?" Qin Huai stepped aside at the doorway. "I suspect he's mentally unstable. He doesn't cry or make a fuss, and he won't say a word. If you stare at him, he'll stare back at you. It's really unsettling."

Qiao Ran naturally had to go and see, asking as she walked, "What did the doctor say?"

"As soon as the person woke up, she wouldn't let the doctor touch her. Her gaze made the doctor feel uneasy, and he ran away with his medicine box and disappeared."

"...What's wrong with this guy?" Qiao Ran raised an eyebrow.

Qin Huai: "Who are you talking about? A doctor or a delicate lady?"

Qiao Ran didn't react for a moment. What kind of ridiculous nickname was this? It was all nonsense.

However, after recalling her delicate appearance and frail body, Qiao Ran had to admit that it was indeed suitable.

She said, "The one I kicked unconscious."

"Who knows what his bad habits are?" Qin Huai said. "Besides, the doctor in this shabby village isn't really skilled. He can't figure out anything in half a day. As long as he wakes up, it's a blessing that he didn't die at our hands."

Qiao Ran said bitterly, "If word got out that I, Qiao Ran, kicked a rich young master to death, no one would believe it."

But the truth is, she almost got kicked to death.

There were brothers watching at the door. Qiao Ran pushed the door open and went in. There was no brazier in this room, and it was much colder than her room.

Qin Huai was right, this person is indeed a bit... strange.

The moment Qiao Ran entered and their eyes met, her heart skipped a beat. Those enigmatic, soulful eyes stared intently at her, a chilling smile pressing down from within, blending seamlessly with that intimidating appearance. She felt instantly frozen in place. Cold…

Qiao Ran looked away first, then leaned closer and said the first thing, "I'm so out of touch with the world that I've never heard of the Chen family having an eldest son. My apologies."

The person sitting upright on the edge of the bed was still staring intently at Qiao Ran, as if trying to see right through her.

Qiao Ran moved even closer. The room was a bit dark, and she felt inexplicably irritable. She said stiffly, "Can't we light a few more candles? It's not like I don't have money to buy sparks."

Qin Huai waved his hand, and the room was immediately brightened up.

Qiao Ran pulled up a stool and sat opposite Jiao Didi, only then realizing that his face was completely bloodless and he didn't look like a normal person at all.

She tentatively asked, "A mute?"

Everyone knows that the Prime Minister's family has a daughter, which made her double-check. The carriage that was hijacked that afternoon belonged to the Prime Minister Chen family, so there's no mistake. Could it be that the Chen family kept it a secret because their only son is sickly and mute?

"Can you even speak?" Qiao Ran, unusually patient, smiled, resting her chin on her hand, and asked, "If you can, then say something."

Her response was a slight lift of her affectionate eyes, her fair eyelids as thin as cicada wings, the texture beneath the skin clearly visible upon close inspection.

"He's really a mute."

Qiao Ran sighed, straightened her back, crossed her legs, and said regretfully, "What a pity for such a good-looking face."

I couldn't get a single question out of him.

Qin Huai chimed in, "I knew it was creepy."

Qiao Ran didn't find it creepy, but just looking at the other person gave her an indescribable feeling, like being imprisoned, like a heavy iron chain choking her throat.

"Never mind," Qiao Ran said to Qin Huai, "Send a message to the people looking for him tomorrow morning, saying that if they want him, they should ask the Chen family to exchange him for 'Spring and Autumn Annals'."

As soon as she finished speaking, the person in front of her suddenly clutched his chest and coughed. In an instant, redness spread from his neck to his forehead. He looked extremely uncomfortable, his veins were constricted, and he was in great pain.

"Cough...cough..."

Qin Huai: "Can a mute person cough?"

Qiao Ran frowned. "Duh my ass, hurry up and get the water."

He's clearly not mute.

The cough sounded weak, as if he might pass out at any moment.

In a moment of desperation, Qiao Ran, for reasons unknown, reached out to grab him, only to be met with a sharp, cold glare the moment her fingertips touched him.

But the fingertips that touched her so briefly were burning hot, and Qiao Ran exclaimed, "How did they get so hot?!"

Qin Huai brought over some water and asked doubtfully, "Does he have a fever?"

Qiao Ran: "He's burning to death."

Qin Huai: “…”

"Stop coughing," Qiao Ran said urgently, handing him a sip of water. "Take a sip first. I didn't mean to kill you. I'll find a doctor to bring down your fever. Don't die here."

The other person was still coughing when he raised his hand and bumped into Qiao Ran's wrist, causing the water in Qiao Ran's hand to fall to the ground and spill cleanly.

Qiao Ran said, "Quickly, find a doctor."

The brothers at the door said, "Second Master, the doctor has run away and is not coming back no matter what."

"Then tie him up!" Qiao Ran said sternly.

The brothers at the door turned and ran.
