Chapter 33 Helian

Having lived two lives, Qiao Ran has never wanted to be constrained. She believes that no matter how difficult her life is this time, she will still be free.

Chen Jiu accompanied Qiao Ran out of Lanshan Hall. Old Master Qu was already waiting at the door with the medicine. When Qiao Ran saw this, she quickly indicated that she had to leave and told Chen Jiu to go and drink the medicine.

Chen Jiu said, "I have another question for you."

"What's the matter?"

"Was the martial arts manual that Cang Zhengqing lost truly a martial arts manual?"

Qiao Ran was in Wuting Hall that night. Chen Jiu didn't know what had happened in the hall, so he casually asked her about it.

Qiao Ran told him without hesitation, "Maybe not."

Chen Jiu's suppressed gaze deepened. "Perhaps?"

Qiao Ran had intended to bring up this matter with Chen Jiu, but she forgot about it after a while. Since Chen Jiu asked, she didn't intend to hide it. After thinking carefully, she said, "What I saw at Wuting Hall that night was a painting. The painting depicted a woman. Perhaps this is what Cang Zhengqing lost."

"A painting?" Chen Jiu stood with his hands behind his back, pacing back and forth by the small pond. After a moment of thought, he turned around and asked, "Do you remember what the woman in the painting looked like?"

Qiao Ran had been staring at Chen Jiu's back. He was clearly slender, but the curve of his waist was still faintly outlined by his clothes. So much so that she didn't hear Chen Jiu's question clearly and mumbled a reply: "Not as pretty as you."

A rare hint of shyness appeared on Chen Jiu's handsome face. He turned his back to look at the carp swimming in the pond. "If Qiao Qiao remembers what that woman looks like, could you draw her from memory?"

Qiao Ran was momentarily embarrassed. She stood next to Chen Jiu and said with difficulty, "If I saw the real person, I could recognize him. As for this painting... I only glanced at it briefly and remember it vaguely. In addition, I have never been literate since childhood. Asking me to paint it is harder than climbing to heaven."

Under the soft moonlight, Chen Jiu frowned slightly, but when he faced Qiao Ran, his brows relaxed and his face lit up. "It's alright, then we won't draw anymore. You should go back and rest."

“I’ll point it out to you next time I see it,” Qiao Ran said, raising her hand to promise. “I swear.”

Chen Jiu looked helpless, but still wore a faint smile.

Qiao Ran knew that it would be a long time before she could see the person in Cang Zhengqing's painting, and she immediately felt that she was too stupid and clumsy. She couldn't even paint a picture. She blamed herself and clutched her sleeve, eager to help Chen Jiu.

Chen Jiu looks so sickly; he might get bullied again when he goes out to solve cases tomorrow.

She gave a slight smile, "Chen Jinzhou, shall I go out with you tomorrow?"

Chen Jiu didn't ask anything, he just nodded and said "okay".

On the way back to the house, Qiao Ran kept thinking about how the Chen family could bear to let someone as gentle and refined as Chen Jiu not even reveal his name in the capital.

What kind of place is Kyoto? Nobles and nobles are all dressed in fine clothes and riding spirited horses, living a life of unrestrained pleasure. Chen Jiu's youth must have been like that, with several young men riding horses together on spring outings. Although Chen Jiu couldn't ride a horse, he could ride in a carriage, right?

But he never enjoyed a single day of these things that he should have been able to enjoy.

The interrogation was scheduled for the next day in the main hall of the government office. Qiao Ran changed into light men's clothing and accompanied Chen Jiu to the meeting. On the way, Chen Jiu took a short rest, and Qiao Ran noticed that he was always unconsciously frowning and looking preoccupied.

She longed to reach out and smooth things over for him, and kept staring at Chen Jiu the whole way. His face was always paler than others, which made her feel sorry for him.

When they arrived at the government office, He Zhengyuan saw her following him and turned away to sit down. After Chen Jiu came in, he pretended to be blind.

After Chen Jiu sat down, he asked, "Have you invited Hall Master Cang?"

Min Heyu was sitting in the main seat of the government office today, under the watchful eyes of many. Unlike the other courtyard, he couldn't be too eager, so he directly ordered someone to summon Cang Zhengqing.

"Master Cang, do you know why I summoned you here today?"

Cang Zhengqing had been staying indoors for the past few days, his heart filled with pent-up anger. He answered coldly, "I have said everything I need to say. Wuting Hall is innocent. Please ask whatever else you wish, sir."

"Hmph!" Min Heyu adopted the authority of the prefect of Sichuan. "It's a pity, it's not me who's going to interrogate you today, but Special Envoy Chen."

Cang Zhengqing then glanced at Chen Jiu, the special envoy from the Sichuan villa whom he had only met once before and had not exchanged blows with. He stared at him for a while, and the indifference between the man's brows sent chills down his spine.

Cang Zhengqing suddenly felt uneasy.

Chen Jiu, maintaining the demeanor of a humble gentleman, subtly concealed his joy and beckoned to Xie Laoshi, who then brought over something that looked like a book with both hands.

Chen Jiu opened it, flipped through it, and said calmly, "Send it to Hall Master Cang."

"Yes."

Xie Laoshi then gave it to Cang Zhengqing. Cang Zhengqing only glanced at it and felt a chill run down his spine. But being an old hand at the trade, he just chuckled and asked in confusion, "Special Envoy Chen, it's just a cultivation manual, what's the problem?"

Chen Jiu said leisurely, "If Hall Master Cang doesn't take a closer look, isn't this the supreme cultivation manual that you lost in all that trouble? I've found it for you."

"The one I lost?" Cang Zhengqing quickly took it and looked at it over and over. "Special Envoy Chen is joking. I didn't lose this one."

"Oh, it's not this one again?" Chen Jiu asked doubtfully. "Then they probably took the wrong one. Someone, go to Wuting Hall again and find the one that Hall Master Cang mentioned!"

Xie Laoshi accepted the order and turned to leave.

Cang Zhengqing raised his arm to stop him, "Wait!"

Chen Jiu looked up at him.

Cang Zhengqing said coldly, "What do you mean! Special Envoy Chen sent people to search my Wuting Hall without even giving a heads-up? Even if you are from the Imperial City Guard, you can't just do whatever you want!"

"Master Cang has refused to tell the truth and is trying to cover up for the perpetrator. What other way is there but to force her to reveal her weakness?" Chen Jiu breathed a sigh of relief and slowly watched the show.

Upon hearing this, Cang Zhengqing could no longer wait. His expression changed drastically, and he exchanged a palm strike with Xie Laoshi before rushing out. Min Heyu slammed his hand on the table, "Take him down!"

The people in the government office immediately rushed in and surrounded Cang Zhengqing.

Cang Zhengqing gritted his teeth, staring at Chen Jiu with bloodshot eyes, "I'll take your life!"

Chen Jiu pursed his lips and raised his voice slightly: "Bring Helian Xiaoxuan up."

Cang Zhengqing struggled to break free and head towards the door, but Xie Laoshi injured his knee and pinned him to the ground.

Immediately afterwards, Zhou Mu and the guards from the villa brought in a girl with a light veil covering her body and disheveled hair. When the girl saw Cang Zhengqing's appearance, she merely curled her lips in contempt before being thrown to the ground.

"Helian Xiaoxuan? Special Envoy Chen, please tell me what's going on?" He Zhengyuan asked anxiously, standing up as if to say something.

Min Heyu reassured him, "Lord He, please sit down and talk. Don't be hasty."

"Lord He, listen to me. Why not hear what Master Cang and Miss Helian have to say?"

"Pah!" Cang Zhengqing spat at Chen Jiu, then quickly deflated, his hatred turning to sorrow. "I have nothing to say."

Chen Jiu: "What about Miss Helian? Aren't you going to tell me?"

Helian Xiaoxuan lay on the ground pretending to be dead, her clothes half-exposed, seemingly unconcerned.

Seeing this, Chen Jiu didn't insist. He stood up, leaning on the desk, and said, "Since no one is saying anything, let me guess. This is probably what happened."

Everyone held their breath and concentrated.

“Helian is a common surname in Pingjing, but it is quite rare in our Daliang. The ancestors of Hall Master Cang had half Pingjing blood, so you two can be considered distant relatives,” Chen Jiu said as he walked down to the hall. “Three years ago, Hall Master Cang brought the Helian girl, who was then a Yangzhou prostitute, back to Wuting Hall. He probably knew about this relationship and couldn’t bear to see her wandering outside, so he brought her back to the hall to raise her.”

Cang Zhengqing looked up at Helian Xiaoxuan on the ground. She was both his success and his downfall.
