Being a passerby in HP female protagonist fanfiction
Chapter 44 Birthday
Time passed quickly, and the holiday arrived as scheduled. Willotte saw me off with a look of regret.
I was already familiar with the way back after the holiday. Little Bati had replied to my email quickly beforehand, saying he would come to pick me up, so I waited for him at the agreed location.
Outside the noisy station, a handsome and gentle young man waved to me with a harmless smile on his face.
"Claire, over here."
I happily walked over to Little Barty, carrying my suitcase.
"It's just a two-week holiday, why are you so excited?" I suppressed the upturn of my lips, held back my pounding heart, and coughed solemnly.
"Gavin, it's been a long time."
"How's Claire doing at school?" Little Barty's smile deepened. He probably sensed the excitement beneath my calm exterior. He took my suitcase and led me away.
"It's alright." I thought for a moment, then sighed softly, "Apart from Quidditch, there's not much to say."
"If I had to pinpoint something that makes me sad, it would be the amount of homework I have." I started rambling, as if I really considered Little Barty a close older brother. "Several papers, just looking up the technical terms is going to kill me."
"It's okay, you can ask me anything you don't understand," Little Barty said with a slight smile.
"Thank you, Gavin!" I blinked, my tone cheerful. "I really don't know what I would do without you."
"I wish I could stay with Gavin forever..."
Little Barty and I chatted and laughed all the way, and the atmosphere was harmonious and pleasant. Our originally somewhat unfamiliar relationship seemed to have become much closer on the surface.
I only breathed a sigh of relief when I got back to the house and hid in my room alone under the pretense of packing my things.
Dealing with someone as deep and calculating as Little Barty is so difficult.
The house was clean, the kitchen was full of food, and there was trash in the trash can... At least on the surface, it was impossible to tell whether Little Barty had been away for a long time.
"How does Claire want to celebrate her birthday?" Barty asked, rolling up his sleeves to prepare a meal.
"Um... I don't know either." I stood to the side and repeated the same lines I had used to fool Willotte to Barty.
"I haven't really celebrated my birthday much, but maybe I can have a bowl of longevity noodles. My mom made them for me once." I looked at the young man in front of me longingly and explained to him what longevity noodles were.
"Oh... It's alright, I'll prepare it for Claire." Little Barty looked thoughtful, and patted my head with his large hand. "Claire, don't worry, just be happy on your birthday."
"Hmm..." I nodded and reached out to tidy my messy hair.
Little Badi is really useful, like a two-dimensional butler who is always on call. In order to fulfill the role of the caring older brother he specially set up, I simply opened my heart and told him about all the little things, in order to show my dependence on him.
"Gavin, Gavin, what should I do here? I don't know..."
"Gavin, it seems we're out of groceries..."
"Gavin, I want to eat this today, is that okay?"
"Gavin Gavin, I..."
“Okay, Claire.”
No matter what I say, the young man always seems to agree. He is silently infiltrating my life. In a sense, our lives are now one.
I swear to God, I really just wanted to create a character at first, but Little Barty in his disguised form was just too genuine. He would answer questions honestly and do things honestly.
I couldn't resist being lazy, so I called Little Barty to solve everything when something happened.
We lived like a real family, a gentle older brother and a slightly insecure independent child. As we spent more and more time together, I also discovered some of Little Barty's qualities.
When I first saw Barty chatting with his neighbor, I was really shocked. The disconnect was so strange... Barty getting along well with Muggles?
Hmm, that's strange. Let me take another look.
Later I discovered that Little Barty knew most of the neighbors on Privet Road, and was even more familiar with them than I was. He was elegant and humorous in his speech and had a generous and proper demeanor. Many people liked him and knew that he was my guardian.
A neighbor I know told me that Little Bati goes out to work every few days. He said it's a bit far, but he doesn't know what he does.
I guessed what Little Barty wanted to do. He probably wanted to ask the neighbors about my parents and me, or to complete his identity information.
"Mr. Griffin is such a cultured man," my neighbor and I remarked.
"Thank you for the compliment." Little Barty smiled, his face always seemed to have just the right smile, and he handled his relationships with his neighbors very well.
I grabbed the corner of his sleeve and looked around curiously, like a curious child.
"Claire, keep up." The young man reminded me helplessly. He was holding onto me with one hand and carrying a bag of fruit in the other. At first glance, he looked like a very domestic and virtuous woman.
Having an adult around makes a difference; the way you look at someone when you go out is different, and your sense of security is instantly boosted.
When I'm alone, I can be completely independent, but once someone is around to solve things for me, I become a useless little dumpling, neither wanting to lift a finger nor use my brain.
I tugged at Little Barty's sleeve, swaying back and forth, feeling incredibly relaxed.
"I wish Gavin really were my family," I muttered to myself, noticing out of the corner of my eye that Barty's ears twitched.
“We’re family as long as Claire wants,” Barty replied softly, a smile playing on his lips in the natural light.
The holiday was really enjoyable, and with Little Barty's help, my homework was also perfectly solved.
On my birthday, Little Barty got up early and made me a bowl of longevity noodles according to a recipe he had found out.
The steaming noodles warmed my stomach, and I remained excited. Little Barty even made a handmade cake and lit candles.
Looking at the exquisite handmade cake, I thought to myself how hard it must have been for Little Barty. To take care of me, she has become an all-rounder, capable of cooking, cleaning, and socializing.
If he really were just Gavin, and not Batty Jr., I might consider him family.
Unfortunately... I still can't figure out what his purpose is, and everything he does is shrouded in suspicion.
“Make a wish, Claire,” the young man said to me, his smile pure and his eyes shining.
We sat together, with delicious cakes and other snacks on the table, and the gifts I had received under the sofa; the atmosphere was warm and comfortable.
"I hope everything goes well and everyone is safe and happy." I said this in both English and Chinese.
