Rebirth: Supreme Soul Master
Chapter 2 Testing Mental Strength
The boy's name is William. He sat on a simple wooden chair, looking absent-minded.
Not long ago, he was attacked by his mortal enemy. He looked at his body, checking the spots where the tails had just pierced him, only to find that any one of them had left him with zero points.
This was strange, but what was even stranger was what he had just experienced. He felt like a small boat with a broken mast, tossed about in a thunderstorm.
A full hour later, he began to control his emotions and his jumbled thoughts. The outside world was pitch black, showing just how deep the night was.
But he had no desire to sleep. He had just been resurrected and sent back to the past by a mysterious force. A full hour later, the fierce battle he had fought with the nine-tailed fox demon was still haunting him.
"So I went back to the academy...sigh." He took a deep breath, reminiscing about his life at the academy.
William's life was far from ideal. He wasn't born into a prestigious family or a wealthy household. This academy was one of the most prestigious in the entire Southern Human Kingdom, yet he had joined it merely as a porter.
The porter's only task was to help the academy's registered students move and provide them with various supplies. Those kids all came from wealthy families, so he had to serve them during the day.
Life may seem poor, but it's not actually that bad. In return for working eight hours a day, he has his own place to live, access to resources outside the academy, and opportunities to attend classes and even go on adventures.
However, compared to the life he had just ended under the nine-tailed fox, he knew this was not the life he deserved, nor the life he wanted.
“I have to change everything,” he said, his fists clenched and his frail body trembling slightly. “I’ve been given this chance to repay that damned fox tenfold. I can’t waste a single second, I can’t let it go like this.”
He looked out through the only small window in the cramped room. It could perhaps be called his living space, but it was just a useless cabinet on the outskirts of the college campus.
He never imagined that his last wish would come true. He barked wildly at the fox, but even in his wildest dreams, he never thought he would actually be sent back in time to start his life anew.
Recalling his last words before he died, his heart began to calm down. "I need to make some plans," he told himself, then opened the only drawer on his desk and took out some things.
It was a pure, milky-white crystal, its surface faintly shimmering with a crystalline luster. This was the only known crystal in this world, called a spirit crystal, the universal currency of this world.
He didn't keep the crystal; after dusting it off, he placed it on the table. Then he took something else out of the drawer.
It was a thick, short candle. Its outer surface was covered with irregular, round green spots, which were caused by the candle melting.
Those were candles, common things in the world, used to ward off darkness. There was nothing but this green substance, yet it burned when lit, emitting enough light to dispel the darkness in the room.
It was made from ordinary ore found on the side of a large mine. Aside from emitting light at midnight, it had no value. However, William knew many uses for this material.
The two items William took were quite ordinary in this world, with little value. It wasn't surprising that a porter like him could obtain such supplies from the academy.
“I remember that before the big drop, my strength had stagnated for a long time, but I have to test it out,” he said in a low voice, holding a spirit crystal in one hand and a light candle in the other.
He used the faint soul power within him to ignite the flame above the candlelight, and then waited.
To others, candles seem utterly useless for testing anything. But he knew that the material of a candle was a perfect stimulant for spirit crystals, any conductive material.
There are various methods for testing soul power in this world, but William considers them all to be low-level and idiotic. He intends to use a new method to test his soul power improvement, a method that doesn't yet exist in this world.
Spirit crystals are mined from large mines around the world. The one he possessed was considered the lowest grade. Although it contained little soul power, it was sufficient for his test.
The moment the flame appeared, the entire green candle was ignited, emitting its usual pale green glow. However, William's eyes were fixed on the candle itself, not its light.
The fire heated the entire candle. This material, once exposed to fire, would liquefy like a candle. Pale green beads began to form on the candle's irregular surface.
Seeing this, William held the candle against the crystal, letting the small green beads fall onto the smooth surface of the crystal.
One bead, five beads, one hundred beads. Once the entire surface was covered, he set the candle aside, held the spirit crystal in both hands, and slowly rubbed it.
He only stopped when the green substance from the candle had evenly covered the entire surface.
He slowly channeled his soul power into the crystal. The moment his soul power touched its surface, it began to emit a faint green light, and then the green substance began to dissipate inside the crystal, disappearing without a trace.
However, his little face showed no reaction. The moment the last grain of green matter disappeared, a new change occurred at the center of the spirit crystal.
A shy ray of light appeared, marking the beginning of the evolution. William continuously poured energy into the crystal until the changes stopped, and a clear vision appeared before his eyes.
He held the crystal closer to examine the patterns and colors inside.
"A pale white, only twelve dots... So this was my forte back then... Sigh!" he said melancholy. "Twelve soul points, still a long way from becoming a Soul Master." He didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this result.
If someone were to go back to their youth and tell them that their fate would change in twenty years and they would become a powerful Soul Master, they would call that person crazy!
