Rebirth: Supreme Soul Master
Chapter 16 Trouble
William returned to his empty cabinet, running more steps than walking. His poor belongings were on the outside side of the small cabinet. So he had to carry them inside, which took him about half an hour.
Once he finished speaking, he couldn't wait any longer.
“It’s time to test it out.” He didn’t even glance at the bag full of crystals. He took out one of the five cores he had bought and reopened the wound on his left hand with the Weak Sword.
A few hours later, the wound had healed, leaving a faint, fine scar.
Blood gushed out, and he anxiously awaited a miracle. But he was destined to be disappointed.
"This...this won't work?!"
His worst fears have come true!
After testing the five different demon cores he had purchased, he finally discovered something was wrong. Last night, he tested this method on hundreds of cores, and not a single one failed.
"Let me calm down and think about this..." He tried to control his emotions and think about the problem rationally. He quickly discovered the problem.
“I didn’t kill these monsters…” he said, looking at the bloodstains on his clothes. “So, before I do that again, I need to kill any monsters I can…”
This was the crux of the problem he was pondering, and also the first logical explanation he could find.
He proposed a theory to explain why this method failed. But he wasn't sure. He needed to test it before he could offer any further hope.
Otherwise, he would have offered an explanation... this method of devouring only works on red monkeys. But just thinking about that made him unwilling to accept such a theory.
His clothes were stained with blood, and the first thing he did was change. As he ate the few pieces of bread he had left, he began to think about his next move.
"If I want to kill monsters, I'll need more weapons and more preparations," he muttered to himself as he tossed aside the sword, which was somewhat rusty, irregularly shaped, and dull.
Killing those weak monsters like monkeys was no longer his goal. He had gained a lot of soul power last night, but he knew the reason behind it.
He could continue killing monkeys and eventually obtain useless cores, which would not bring him any valuable reward.
His soul power was already very low, it had always been low. He doubted whether repeating the same method would produce the same result.
Moreover, he devoured hundreds of cores, gaining over thirty points of mental energy. His goal was to score over one hundred points, shocking the entire academy.
In other words, they must gain 65 sanity points next week. Relying solely on the white monster core won't be of much help; they'll eventually lose sight of their objective.
Of course, these are just his guesses. But given his rich experience from his previous life, who can say that his ideas are wrong?
Considering everything, he knew he had to go back and buy a lot of things. After all, he planned to enter the forest and disappear within that week.
If he dared to return, the academy would investigate him for refusing the porter's assignment. His only way out was to test his soul power again. But he didn't want that to happen until he reached the level he desired.
Therefore, setting aside weapons and tricks, he needs enough food to survive this period of time.
The monster meat tasted alright, but he was a terrible cook. He knew that if he relied on himself, he would either get poisoned or make inedible food.
“I have more than seven thousand crystals,” he said, examining the large bag and finding a hundred small crystals and seven larger, more sparkling ones.
The larger crystals were called basic crystals. Each one was equivalent to a thousand spirit crystals. "I'm not so poor anymore. I can buy whatever I need," he muttered to himself, and finally went out.
However, after walking for only ten minutes, his path was blocked by a group of disciples.
At this moment, the lecture began, and the entire academy was bustling with learning and training. However, by sheer luck, he encountered a group of disciples he shouldn't have met.
“Alright, alright, alright… look who we have here…” When he saw that familiar face from last night, William knew this wouldn’t end well. “Hey, isn’t your family looking for clues about Miss?”
Contrary to William's expectations, Guan Ning did not rush towards him directly. Instead, he called over a group of disciples standing not far from him. "Come on, I have some interesting news to tell you."
William didn't know what had happened, but he had a bad feeling. A cunning and dirty man like Guan Ning wouldn't do anything good, especially not to him, especially after last night.
William tried to dodge and bypass the group of disciples blocking his way, led by Guan Ning.
"Where do you think you're going?" But before he had taken more than a few steps, a disciple moved and glared at him fiercely.
When William saw that expression, he knew something bad was about to happen.
Under William's cautious gaze, he noticed another group of children approaching. They looked no different from Guan Ni and her group; they were all second-year students at the academy.
They all wore the same uniform.
"What do you want?" It seemed that the man named Lang didn't have a good impression of Guan Ning. His tone and attitude told William that even if the two weren't enemies, they were definitely rivals.
"Come on, don't do this when I want to help," Guan Ning smiled slyly, pointing at William and adding, "Last night I saw the little princess walking away with that mover. If anyone knows what happened to her, it's probably him."
"Shh!" Only then did William, who had been completely unaware, realize what had happened. He knew that Berry would need a long time to recover, perhaps a day.
He shouldn't be blamed for not connecting the dots sooner. His mind was preoccupied with what he needed to buy and how to prepare for the upcoming adventure.
If he were of sound mind, he would immediately connect everything, at least linking Lang's name with the Dragon family, thus returning to Berry.
Hearing Guan Ning's words, William finally understood what was going on. He never expected her situation to become so complicated. Without asking, he knew that her family and relatives must see this as some kind of danger.
He had completely forgotten what had happened to Berry before, and had never thought about it again since leaving her.
Guan Ning was trying to throw him directly into such a hot spot. "What a bastard!" William cursed inwardly.
He knew that Guan Ning's fabricated story about framing him was true. No one was there for either of them while Berry was in such a strange state. It seemed Guan Ning wanted revenge for what happened last night, so he decided to link William to this mess.
Unfortunately for William, Guan Ning's accusation came to light on the spot. He was the only one who knew what had happened to Berry.
But would William let Guan Ning frame him so easily? No chance!
"What's wrong, Miss?" He looked completely innocent in the face of the two groups of people's questioning gazes.
"You should be the one to tell us this!" Guan Ning snorted. He felt it was time for someone else to avenge him without getting his hands dirty. That was the kind of person Guan Ning was.
