Doomsday B&B

Chapter 26 Going Out Alone

The next morning, after telling Qi Huan and Kong Yunhua at the convenience store to contact him via the wireless terminal if they needed anything, he bought a car on the system and went back to his courtyard.

This time, she plans to drive around the area to see if there are any customers. She's really bored in the shop, and going out might give her some fun and fill her free time.

Back in the courtyard, I tidied up, changed into a white tracksuit, packed some snacks in a backpack, and then drove out.

This time, she planned to visit other bases. She had heard from the guests that there was a base in the opposite direction of Shenyang, controlled by politicians and completely different from the base in Shenyang. She wanted to broaden her horizons.

Because it was her first time driving, Qi Yun was a bit inexperienced, so she drove erratically on the road. Fortunately, this was the apocalypse; before the apocalypse, she would definitely be considered a serious road hazard. But luckily, she had a driving experience pack she bought from the system, so she smoothly drove to the Sunshine Base that she had heard about from the customer.

Although Qi Yun reached her destination, her new car became a broken-down car, the kind that looked like it was about to be scrapped. If any car enthusiast knew that a cool and stylish new car had turned into a scrapped car in just 4 hours, they would definitely criticize her to death.

Upon arriving at the Sunshine Base, Qi Yun drove directly to a guard post at the base gate, parked the car, and turned off the engine before daring to speak to the personnel on duty inside.

"Hello, what procedures do I need to go through to get in?"

"Is this your first time here?"

"Yes."

"Just hand over the supplies, our base doesn't have many rules. Do you want to settle down here or just stop by?"

"Is there any difference?" Qi Yun asked, noticing the obvious impatience on the other person's face. She quickly handed a small bag to the staff member.

The staff member casually took the bag, opened it, and found two fresh apples inside. Looking around to make sure no one was watching, she quickly repackaged the bag, carefully placing the apples in her inner pocket. After putting the apples away, she answered Qi Yun's question in the gentlest voice she had ever used:

Let me explain it to you in detail.

"Thank you, big sister."

"You're welcome. Just remember this. If you want to stay for a long time, you'll need to pay 200 jin of grain at once, and they'll give you a pass. If you're just passing through, you'll only need 10 jin of grain, and they'll give you a temporary residence permit."

"Oh, so if I'm just passing through, I only need to pay 10 catties of grain, right?"

"Yes, you can hand it in here." The office worker paused for a moment, then lowered his voice before continuing:

"Little sister, I'll tell you a secret. When they say we need food, there's no specific type. Anything edible and filling will do. Understand?" Looking at the bewildered Qi Yun, he thought for a moment and decided to be more explicit for the sake of those two apples. So he spoke again, but this time his voice was several decibels lower:

"Just take out some grains, potatoes, sweet potatoes, old grains, etc., do you understand now?" It's only because Qi Yun has good hearing that she can't hear such a soft voice.

"Okay, I understand. Thank you, ma'am. This is the grain I need to pay. Please weigh it." She said, handing a small sack to the office worker through the car window.

"Oh, wait a minute." In front of the office staff, she opened the bag, turned around and looked in the passenger seat, put a small package inside, and then handed the bag to the office staff, while winking at them.

The office worker immediately understood what she meant. He opened the bag, glanced at it, took out the small package, put it aside, and weighed the other items.

"There's too much stuff, this is extra, here you go."

After weighing the food, the office staff took out the excess grain and handed it to Qi Yun, along with a small card. Yes, what Qi Yun handed over were potatoes, the wilted kind: "This is the excess grain and your temporary residence permit. This temporary residence permit is only valid for 7 days. You will need to reapply after it expires. My surname is Lian. You can call me Sister Lian."

"Okay, thank you, Sister Lian."

"No need to thank me. If you need anything, just come here and find me. If I'm not here, just ask around. Everyone around here knows me."

"Okay, ma'am, I'll go in now."

"Okay, let's go in quickly."

Watching Qi Yun drive away, Sister Lian took out the small package that Qi Yun had prepared for her, placed it on her lap, and opened it. Inside were three things: a bag of milk candy, a bag of fresh rice, and a small box of strawberries. Sister Lian was stunned. She quickly looked around and put the package under the table, afraid that someone would see it.

After thinking for a moment, she took out her communicator and dialed the number. Once connected, Sister Lian said to the other end:

"Son, come to my workplace right away. Remember to bring a bag with some things in it."

"Mom, what's the rush? I'm at work!"

"What are you dawdling for? Hurry up and come. Remember to bring a bag and stuff a few clothes in it to make it look more voluminous, understand?"

"Mom, I'm off work."

"No, you need to come right now. Ask your dad for leave, just a token gesture will do, but hurry up and come over, otherwise..."

"Okay, I'll go, I'll go right now."

"Good boy, that's a good boy. Remember to carry your backpack."

"Okay, got it. I'll be there soon. Bye." With that, Sister Lian's son hung up the communicator, packed a bag into his clothes, and went to ask for leave.

If anyone overheard Sister Lian's conversation with her son, they would notice that Sister Lian's voice was incredibly soft, barely audible, like a mosquito's hum.

As for Qi Yun, she drove slowly to the parking lot at the base entrance, following the signs on the wall. After circling around, she found what she considered the largest parking space and started parking. She parked again and again, and on her 30th attempt, a gentle male voice came from beside her:

"Miss, do you need any help? I see you've failed to park 22 times already. How about you get out and I'll help you park? Or I can show you how to do it, okay?" Qi Yun stopped what she was doing and looked towards the source of the voice.

Standing where the voice came from was a clear-eyed and gentle man. Perhaps because of the backlighting, she couldn't see what he looked like, but his overall demeanor told her that this man was definitely not bad-looking.

After glancing at him, Qi Yun shook her head, still groggy from parking, deftly opened the car door, got out, and without even closing the door, went straight to the man:

"Thank you for your help." Then he stepped aside and stood there.

Watching the girl get out of the car nimbly, say a word to him, and then stand aside, Zhou Qulin showed a helpless expression. He got in the car, closed the door, parked the car, and turned off the engine, completing the whole process in less than a minute.

Zhou Qulin got out of the car, handed the car keys to Qi Yun who was still standing there in a daze, and gave her a business card. Without waiting for Qi Yun to take it properly, he walked away without looking back.

Watching the man's departing figure, Qi Yun picked up the business card that had fallen to the ground, put it in her pocket along with her car keys, and then followed the signs toward the base.
