Chapter 3 Kassel Academy
"This dragon is more troublesome than I imagined." Tian frowned, but his hands didn't stop moving at all. He quickly adjusted his position and launched another attack on the dragon. Gunshots rang out like raindrops, bullets slicing through the air and flying towards the dragon's weak points.
Lu Mingfei stood aside, witnessing everything. He took a deep breath, his hands trembling slightly. He knew he was far inferior to Tian, but this time, he refused to be a bystander.
He gritted his teeth and charged forward.
The dragon roared deafeningly as it swooped down to the ground, its massive claws lashing upwards like sharp blades. Fire and gunfire mingled in the sky, and the tension in the air reached its peak.
Taking advantage of the moment when Long was restrained by Tian, Lu Mingfei swiftly rushed to Long's side, his blade gleaming coldly in the moonlight. His palms were drenched in cold sweat, and his body was stiff with fear, but he knew he had to seize this opportunity.
"Now!" Lu Mingfei roared, forcefully swinging the blade in his hand, the edge piercing towards the dragon's belly.
The blade sliced through the scales and pierced the dragon's flesh. The dragon let out a painful roar, its body jolting violently. Lu Mingfei was almost thrown back, but he gritted his teeth and held on.
Tian swiftly seized the opportunity, and the bullet instantly pierced the dragon's eye. The powerful impact caused the dragon's head to snap back violently. With a final, deafening roar, the dragon's body crashed to the ground, raising a cloud of dust.
The battle is finally over.
Lu Mingfei lay on the ground, panting heavily, his whole body aching. His mind was blank; he felt he didn't even have the strength to lift a finger.
Tian stood before Long's corpse, sheathing his twin pistols, his gaze remaining as calm as ice. "You're still alive, which means you weren't entirely useless." His voice was flat, devoid of any emotion.
"I..." Lu Mingfei wanted to say something, but he was too tired, and the words turned into a sigh.
Tian walked slowly up to him, looking down at him with a slight frown. "You're from Kassel College. Is running away all you've learned in the college?"
Lu Mingfei was taken aback, struggled to sit up, and gave an embarrassed smile. "No, no... We learned a lot of things, including dragon slaying, but as you can see, I'm not very good at those things."
Tian snorted coldly, "Obviously."
The atmosphere was a little awkward. Lu Mingfei scratched his head and said, "Um... can I ask you a question? Why are you so strong? I've never seen anyone like you before. What we learn in the academy is completely different from your fighting style."
After a moment of silence, Tian said in a low voice, "My power has nothing to do with the academy's teachings."
"Then why did you slay the dragon? What grudge do you have against the dragon race?" Lu Mingfei asked curiously.
Tian's gaze darkened slightly, as if he were recalling something. "Hatred? Perhaps," he said softly, "but more so, a sense of responsibility."
Lu Mingfei frowned, about to ask something else, when Tian interrupted him.
"Alright, that's enough for today." Tian turned and walked forward, his voice still cold. "If you want to live longer, you'd better improve your strength. Next time, I might not save you."
The moonlight faded, and darkness enveloped the abandoned church. The air was thick with the scorching aura left by the dragons, and traces of battle still lingered on the ground.
Lu Mingfei limped behind Tian, his exhaustion and aches making each step feel like walking on knives. But more than the physical discomfort, he felt a deep sense of doubt and repression. He had never met anyone like Tian, not just in terms of strength, but also in his innate coldness and composure.
"What did you mean by 'responsibility' just now?" Lu Mingfei couldn't help but break the silence, his voice a little hoarse.
Tian didn't stop walking; he continued forward, as if Lu Mingfei's question meant nothing to him. But a few seconds later, he suddenly spoke, his voice calm and deep.
"I have my own goals and mission, which have nothing to do with the dogmas of your academy." Tian's tone remained indifferent. "Slaying dragons is my destiny."
Lu Mingfei was completely confused. Dragon slaying...destiny? He wanted to ask more, but the aura emanating from Tian made him hesitate.
“You talk as if you have some deep-seated hatred for dragons,” Lu Mingfei couldn’t help but say. “Although our Kassel College also slays dragons, at least we have a clear purpose—to protect the human world from the threat of dragons. You… don’t seem to be fighting for humanity at all.”
Tian paused slightly, turned around, and fixed his cold gaze on Lu Mingfei. His silver eyes seemed to pierce through the night, carrying a sense of oppression that made Lu Mingfei involuntarily take a step back.
"I have never said that I am fighting to protect anyone," Tian said coldly. "My power comes from the dragon race, and I have my own path. Humans, the academy, and even this city mean nothing to me."
Lu Mingfei was stunned. He had never heard of such a thing—power coming from the dragon race? What did that mean? He instinctively sensed a dangerous aura, as if the person standing in front of him was not just a dragon slayer, but some more complex and mysterious being.
"You are... a descendant of the dragon?" Lu Mingfei blurted out, his voice filled with shock and unease.
Tian's eyes instantly turned icy, and the temperature in the air seemed to drop several degrees. "It's best not to ask questions that shouldn't be asked."
The atmosphere became tense, and Lu Mingfei felt as if he had crossed a line he shouldn't have. He swallowed hard, trying to lighten the mood. "Okay, okay... I won't ask anymore."
Tian glanced at him coldly, seemingly no longer intending to continue the conversation. He turned and continued walking forward, his steps firm, as if no amount of doubt or speculation could shake his resolve.
As Lu Mingfei watched Tian's retreating figure, his doubts and unease deepened. Everything he had learned at Kassel College told him that the white-haired youth's power and background likely concealed a great secret. Unfortunately, Tian wasn't the type to readily reveal his past.
They walked for a while and finally arrived at a dilapidated warehouse on the edge of the city. Tian stopped and said expressionlessly, "You can go now."
Lu Mingfei was stunned. "Go? Where to?"
"Return to the academy." Tian's voice was icy, as if every word was a command. "You no longer need to stay here."
Lu Mingfei frowned slightly. Although he was exhausted, his unwillingness to leave and his curiosity prevented him from doing so. "Wait a minute, Tian. I know you're strong, but fighting the dragons all by yourself... you have a bigger plan, don't you?"
Tian didn't answer directly, but just glanced at him coldly, "You're asking too many questions."
Lu Mingfei knew he couldn't get more information from Tian, but he also knew he couldn't stay there any longer. The sky was beginning to lighten; he had to return to the academy to report. But Tian's appearance, his power, his secrets… so many incredible things made Lu Mingfei feel that this was far from over.
He sighed, turned and left with mixed feelings, "Okay, I'll go back... but we'll meet again."
Tian remained silent, watching Lu Mingfei's departing figure until he disappeared into the dawn.
A few days later, Kassel College
Lu Mingfei walked wearily through the college gates, greeted by the familiar campus scenery. Everything here was the same as when he left, yet he knew he could no longer see this place with the same eyes.
The academy's tower shimmered in the morning sunlight, and the teaching buildings, training grounds, and students coming and going all seemed so peaceful and harmonious.
But Lu Mingfei's heart was no longer at peace. That battle to slay the dragon, and everything about the sky, lingered in his mind like an unsolvable mystery.
"You're back." A familiar voice came from behind.
Lu Mingfei turned around and saw Chu Zihang standing behind him, his gaze as calm and sharp as ever.
"How was it? Did you complete the mission?" Chu Zihang's voice was calm, but there was a hint of concern in his tone.
