Chapter 262 Establishes Three Laws
Chu Zihang walked on the other side of the group, holding the Dragon Cutter in his hand, his expression cold and stern. His gaze swept over the approaching statues, and he said in a low voice, "These statues are not static. They seem to be waiting for some kind of opportunity, or observing our actions."
The words had barely left his lips when the air around them tightened abruptly. All the statues seemed to open their eyes simultaneously, a ghostly blue light gleaming in their empty sockets. Then, a deep, hoarse voice drifted from afar, as if carried by the wind:
"Loyalty is the foundation of trials; betrayal is the beginning of destruction. Are you prepared to face your choices?"
The ground began to tremble, and the statues slowly moved from their pedestals. Their twisted bodies, as if pieced together from stones, emitted a teeth-grinding grinding sound as they moved. They surrounded the four people in the center, forming an impenetrable wall.
"They've finally arrived." Caesar gripped his rune sword, a hint of excitement flashing in his eyes. "These things look pretty sturdy. I wonder what it'll feel like to chop them."
Tian quickly analyzed the surrounding environment and said in a deep voice, "Their numbers and energy fluctuations are disproportionate. The real test may not be the battle, but the rules hidden behind these statues."
"Rules?" Lu Mingfei took a step back, his voice trembling as he looked at the approaching stone statues. "You mean we can't just cut them down?"
“Maybe not,” Chu Zihang said in a low voice, gripping the Dragon Cutter tightly, his gaze fixed on the moving statues. “But if they make the first move, I won’t hesitate.”
As the statue drew near, a massive rune array appeared in the center of the ground, enveloping the four in blue light. The deep voice spoke again: "The trial begins. Offer your choices; let loyalty or betrayal determine the outcome."
A beam of light rose from the rune array, piercing the dark, cloud-covered sky. Within the beam appeared a massive round stone table, upon which rested four uniquely shaped daggers, each with its blade intricately engraved with runes.
“This is the key to the trial.” Tian analyzed the scene before him, his voice calm but solemn. “Everyone must choose a dagger and decide on whom to use it.”
"Are you kidding me?" Lu Mingfei's eyes widened, his voice almost screaming. "Isn't this forcing us to stab each other in the back?"
Caesar stroked his chin, his tone seemingly joking: "Interesting, this trial really puts the conflicts out in the open."
Chu Zihang remained silent, but a hint of wariness flickered in his eyes. He asked in a low voice, "Are the rules clear? What will happen if we don't act?"
Tian nodded: "The essence of the rules is choice. If we don't make a decision, the trial will determine that everyone has failed. Conversely, if someone betrays us, the trial will reward the 'survivors' with passing, but the entire team will be completely torn apart."
The atmosphere froze instantly, everyone feeling an invisible pressure. The cold glint of the dagger seemed to mock their powerlessness, each second robbing them of their choice.
“So,” Caesar broke the silence, walking to the round table, picking up a dagger and casually toying with it, “are we going to be honest, or do something different?”
"Caesar!" Lu Mingfei called out nervously, cold sweat beading on his forehead. "You're not really planning to make a move, are you?"
Caesar turned to look at him, his gaze complex. His voice was soft, yet carried a deeper meaning: "This is just a trial, isn't it? How you choose, and what the outcome, is sometimes just a game."
Chu Zihang stepped forward, standing between Caesar and Lu Mingfei, his gaze icy: "Don't let the trial affect your judgment. Under no circumstances should you attack each other."
Tian also spoke up, saying, "The essence of the trial is provocation. As long as we persist in not giving in, we will not let it succeed."
Lu Mingfei looked at them, gritted his teeth, and finally mustered up the courage to say, "No matter how much this trial forces us, we can't let it lead us! If we lose trust, what's the point of passing the trial?"
Caesar was silent for a moment, then suddenly chuckled and put the dagger back on the table: "Mingfei, at least that sounds like something a teammate would say. Alright, I'll listen to you."
Chu Zihang nodded and put down the Dragon Cutter. After confirming that no one had made any unusual movements, Tian gently reached out and touched the rune in the center of the round table. A blinding light enveloped the four of them, and a deep voice echoed in the air:
"Challengers, you have chosen loyalty. The trial has been passed, but whether your loyalty will last depends on your next actions."
As the light faded, the four stood once more in the wilderness. The statue returned to its tranquil state, and the rune array on the ground disappeared.
"The third trial is over," Tian said in a low voice, his eyes filled with complex emotions. "Next, we will face even greater temptations and tests."
Lu Mingfei let out a long breath and forced a smile: "All I want to ask now is, when can we go back to sleep?"
Caesar laughed and patted him on the shoulder: "Don't worry, there are still many trials ahead, Mingfei. Your sleep will have to wait a long time!"
The sky ahead darkened again, a new road faintly appeared in their field of vision, and deeper darkness awaited them.
Upon entering through the stone gate, the four found themselves in a magnificent hall. The surrounding walls soared into the clouds, adorned with countless ancient reliefs depicting crowned figures who seemed to be issuing commands, presiding over trials, or receiving the adoration of their subjects. In the very center of the hall stood a massive judgment platform, upon which rested a thick, black book, its cover inscribed with the powerful characters for "Law."
The air was filled with an indescribable sense of majesty. With each step, the floor beneath one's feet seemed to resonate heavily, reminding one that every stone here bore the weight of unquestionable rules.
"This atmosphere is really oppressive," Caesar said softly, his tone still relaxed, but his eyes warily scanning his surroundings. "The theme of this trial seems quite serious, 'the law'? Are we to be the judges or the rule-makers?"
Tian stood before the judge's bench, the rune spear in his hand gleaming faintly. He said in a low voice, "The will of Nidhogg is clearly testing our understanding of order and power. The law is the foundation of a kingdom, and only those who control the law can truly control everything."
Chu Zihang glanced coldly at the books on the judge's bench and asked in a low voice, "What are the rules?"
Tian glanced at the data on the rune gun and said in a deep voice, "There are no explicit rules, but what is certain is that the key to this trial is whether we can formulate a fair and appropriate set of laws and make it work in the simulated environment."
"A simulated environment?" Lu Mingfei frowned. "It sounds like we're playing some kind of virtual courtroom game."
“It’s far more complex than a game.” Tian looked at Lu Mingfei, his voice calm. “Every choice you make here will directly affect the operation of the simulated world. Every law you establish may lead to unpredictable consequences.”
Just then, the ground in front of the judgment seat suddenly cracked open, and a huge magic circle appeared. Blue runic light enveloped the four people, and their consciousness was instantly pulled into a completely new world.
When they regained consciousness, they found themselves in a grand royal palace. Outside the palace were bustling streets, teeming with people, but one could also vaguely see beggars in the corners, the low-lying houses of the slums, and the occasional clashes.
"Welcome, challengers." The deep voice echoed in the air once more. "You are the new rulers of this kingdom, and the order here is up to you. You will establish three laws to resolve the current crisis. If you succeed, you will pass the trial. If you fail, the kingdom will descend into chaos, and the trial will end in failure."
Caesar stood on the high platform of the palace, looked around, and said with a smile, "The rules this time seem quite novel, it feels like playing a role-playing game."
Chu Zihang did not answer, his cold gaze sweeping across the street below the palace. He said in a low voice, "Formulate three laws to resolve the crisis. What is the crisis? We need to clarify the objective."
Tian's rune gun began analyzing the surrounding data. After a moment, he said in a low voice, "The kingdom is currently facing three main problems: riots caused by class contradictions, famine caused by uneven distribution of resources, and public resentment caused by the corruption of powerful ministers within the kingdom."
"That sounds like a headache enough," Lu Mingfei sighed, scratching his head. "We're not law students, how are we supposed to handle this?"
“Let’s start with the essence of the problem,” Tian said calmly. “The core of law is balance and enforceability. If rules that cannot be implemented are created simply to appease the public, it will only make the problem worse.”
