Chapter 38 Breaking off Diplomacy
Chu Luo reached out to take it, saying, "I can do it myself."
"The bowl is a bit hot and heavy, let me carry it for you," Fei Zhiyou said, handing the spoon to Chu Luo.
"No, I feel uncomfortable eating it. Let it cool down a bit, then I can take it and eat it myself." Chu Luo smiled gratefully, but she didn't give in.
"I can't do anything with you"
Chu Luo ate the delicious fish porridge all by herself and was completely satisfied.
"It's really delicious, so delicious!" Chu Luo couldn't stop praising the fish porridge Fei Zhiyou had brought her; it was the best fish porridge she had ever eaten.
The delicious taste of the fish suddenly reminded her of the group of people who used small fish balls to fish, and she told Fei Zhiyou about it.
"The fish they're looking for is called 'clean fish,' which tastes absolutely delicious and is said to have health benefits, such as prolonging life. However, these fish only live in the purest waters and eat only the freshest and purest food, making them extremely rare."
Fei Zhiyou's eyes lit up when he talked about the clean fish, indicating that he was quite familiar with it.
Chu Luo was inexplicably angry. She gripped the blanket tightly and stared at him, asking, "So they can stay away from the mortal world and let the kind-hearted children of Shouyuan Village be the bait? Do you also want that fish?"
Fei Zhiyou could see that Chu Luo was upset, but he didn't change his answer: "To be honest, I want to."
Chu Luo stared at Fei Zhiyou for a long time without saying a word, her gaze as if she were looking at a stranger, but she quickly returned to normal and tried to change the subject.
"I'm tired," Chu Luo said, dismissing him.
Fei Zhiyou, unlike usual, did not know to ask, "Beauty, why don't you tell me your disappointment?"
Chu Luo didn't want to argue with him. She just felt a tightness in her chest. To make herself feel better, she took a deep breath and didn't say anything.
Fei Zhiyou continued, "The fish porridge I gave you earlier was actually made by me using cleaned fish. It was delicious, wasn't it? You see, you liked it too."
"Fei Zhiyou!" Chu Luo shouted in a low voice, resolutely smashing the bowl on the ground.
At this moment, in her heart, her feelings for Fei Zhiyou were shattered, just like that bowl.
What she risked her life to resist and save meant nothing to Fei Zhiyou, whom she considered a friend; he was just like them.
Chu Luo threw off the covers and staggered off the bed, then went to the spittoon next to her to vomit.
"My beauty, don't make such big movements, your wound will reopen. If you're angry, take it out on me, don't torture yourself." Fei Zhiyou couldn't stop her.
"Young Master Fei, the fishmonger asked if you want any fish delivered tomorrow. He said they'll be just as fresh as today's, perfect for making fish porridge."
As Xingzhu entered, she asked a question, never expecting to witness the two of them pulling at each other like enemies.
Upon hearing this, Chu Luo stopped what she was doing and stared blankly at Fei Zhiyou. "You're lying to me?"
After saying that, he spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed into Fei Zhiyou's arms.
Fei Zhiyou took out a handkerchief and wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, saying, "Do you feel better now that you've vomited up this blood?"
Chu Luo then felt a lightness in her chest, and her breathing became much easier.
"Of course I'm lying to you. There aren't that many clean fish. You keep everything to yourself, and you've been lying in bed for so many days. Your blood and qi are stagnant and congested in your chest. If you don't vomit it out, your body won't recover."
Fei Zhiyou broke out in a cold sweat thinking about how the situation had almost spiraled out of control. He carried Chu Luo back to bed and took her pulse before he felt relieved.
Fei Zhiyou looked at the broken bowl on the ground and asked, "My beauty, if I really wanted that clean fish, would you really break off our friendship?"
"Yes," Chu Luo replied without hesitation.
"What if Ji Jin Wuchen wanted to cleanse the fish? Would you be this angry then?"
Chu Luo thought for a moment, "Probably not."
Fei Zhiyou looked at her with a hurt expression. "Why?"
"Because I consider you a friend, and only with loyalty can we break off our friendship," Chu Luo explained with a smile. Although she had doubts and couldn't fully trust him, she truly considered him a friend.
"It's exactly what Jin Wuchen said. No wonder he sent me to annoy you." Fei Zhiyou's face immediately lit up with a smile.
Chu Luo hadn't seen Jin Wuchen since she woke up and assumed he had left. "Was this idea something you all came up with together?"
“I’m not that bad. It was his idea. He said you risked your life for those kids, and you consider me a friend. This is bound to provoke you.”
Chu Luo sighed, noting that although Jin Wuchen had only met her a few times, he truly had a knack for manipulating people's hearts, wondering if this was one of his skills.
"My beauty, I won't lie to you, I really want that delicious clean fish, but I won't use children as bait. Those people are too stupid; they don't have to use the children of Shouyuan Village as bait to get that clean fish."
Fei Zhiyou spoke frankly and didn't hide anything from her. Chu Luo believed that with his intelligence and abilities, he really didn't need to use such an extremely easy and futile method.
This commotion helped Chu Luo and Fei Zhiyou understand each other even better.
"Alright, you should go now," Jin Wuchen interrupted the two of them, having arrived at some unknown time.
Fei Zhiyou wanted to stay a little longer, but the case was tricky, so he got up to say goodbye, "My beauty, let him take care of you for a few days. I have to go help with the investigation."
Those who don't know the facts might not be able to tell who Luo's wife really is.
As soon as Fei Zhiyou left, the temperature in the entire room seemed to drop, and Chu Luo and Jin Wuchen were like two blocks of ice colliding.
"Thank you for saving me." Chu Luo got off the bed, bowed respectfully to Jin Wuchen in front of the bed, and then sat back on the bed.
Jin Wuchen sat down elegantly on a chair to the side, clearly not planning to leave anytime soon. "It was just a casual thing. If I had killed you, the old man would have thought I was the one who did it."
"Don't you intend to make a move?" Chu Luo asked him tentatively.
Instead of an immediate reply, I heard a soft laugh.
Jin Wuchen asked with a hint of doubt, "What did you do that made me have no choice but to take action?"
Chu Luo considered that although he was wary of her, he didn't seem to have any reason to resort to violence. "No," she replied.
"Do you think I enjoy killing?"
"No...no," Chu Luo said, a little nervous at the question.
"What's there to be afraid of? I don't eat people."
Jin Wuchen possesses an undeniable aura of intimidation; he is unknown, sinister, and unpredictable, inspiring fear and a reluctance to interact with him.
It's strange. After he saved her, she wanted to see him before, but after seeing him, she felt uneasy and scared.
Seeing that he still hadn't left, Chu Luo tried to make conversation, asking, "How are those children doing?"
"They're not dead, they're all still alive."
"When I feel better, can I go see them?"
Jin Wuchen refused directly, "It might not work. We're going back to Jiangzhou tomorrow."
"What? You're leaving tomorrow? What about things here?" Chu Luo was quite surprised by the timing.
Jin Wuchen tilted his head and asked, "What's going on here?"
Chu Luo was a little confused. "Is everything alright? What should we do with those children? Fei Zhiyou's mission isn't over yet, and someone is trying to stop the imperial envoy from investigating the case and even kill him. Aren't these all problems?"
Jin Wuchen remained unconcerned. "If you want to take care of those kids, I'll have someone from the Cao Gang take them away and look after them. Fei Zhiyou is just continuing with his unfinished business. What does it have to do with you?"
Upon hearing this, Chu Luo thought it seemed to make sense. "But who would want to kill the imperial envoy?"
"Why do you care about so many people every day? If that imperial envoy is incompetent, a useless piece of trash who can't even protect his own safety, what kind of case is he investigating? Let him die if he wants."
Jin Wuchen spoke in an extremely relaxed tone, as if he didn't consider these things a big deal at all.
"If he were to encounter a master from the Canal Gang who wanted to kill him, I'm afraid very few people would be able to defend against it," Chu Luo probed Jin Wuchen.
There are three factions here: the Regent's men, the Canal Gang, and the Imperial Court. The top scholar couldn't possibly kill himself, so only the Regent Feng Zhe's men and the Canal Gang remain.
If Scholar Xu were incompetent but still wanted to accomplish something, he would have lost his life sooner or later. But if Jin Wuchen wanted to kill him, his abilities alone wouldn't be enough.
Jin Wuchen was amused. "That's an interesting guess. If I wanted him dead, would he still be alive? Do you think I'm still picking an auspicious day?"
