Chapter 2 What to pack up? Nothing's left.
Late at night, the courtyard was quiet. The moon hung high in the sky, its light faintly illuminating the dark courtyard—perfect weather for doing bad things!
A figure quietly opened the door and went to eavesdrop on the uncle and grandparents' room for a while. Apart from the sound of snoring, there was nothing else.
Xia Ning was quite satisfied; as long as she slept soundly, that was good. Her uncle and grandfather weren't good people either; the women abused her, and they never said a word. If she resisted even slightly, she was met with a brutal beating. And her uncle's four children were no better; they bullied the original owner of this body every day. Today, she would avenge her.
She had to steal the keys first; both the cellar and kitchen doors were locked. She moved with lightning speed, as if afraid of waking anyone, quietly opening a corner of the door and slipping into the room. The keys hung in her pocket; she only took them down to put on the table when she slept. Having stolen the keys, she stored everything within sight in her spatial storage, then ran to the cellar.
The elderly couple slept soundly, their snores rising and falling throughout the night without them even turning over.
It wasn't harvest time yet, so there wasn't much grain left in the cellar. Xia Ning didn't mind and ransacked it. She even took the two leftover pickled vegetables from last year. After she left, the cellar was empty except for dust.
The kitchen was sparsely furnished: pots and pans, a little coarse salt, a piece of lard, firewood... I glanced regretfully at the stove that I couldn't pry off. Sigh, how come it's stuck so firmly?
She didn't overlook a single seedling in the vegetable gardens in both the front and back yards. And the pigs and chickens in the backyard—she moved them away while she was still dreaming.
The yard contained various farm tools, firewood, brooms...
She dared not enter anyone else's room; what if they woke up? She was already incredibly lucky to have managed to steal the key. Besides, the space was only for storing items, not for people.
Without being greedy or lingering in battle, Xia Ning decisively slipped out through the side door and, guided by the moonlight and the original owner's memories, headed towards the mountains.
The mountain night was unusually quiet, with only Xia Ning's footsteps and breathing echoing in the air. She nervously looked around, gripping a wooden stick tightly in her hand. She took a few steps, then patted it a few times; in the mountains, venomous snakes were more terrifying than wild beasts. One bite, and she would surely die on the spot.
Suddenly, she heard a howl like that of a wild beast. The sound seemed to be very, very far away from her, and she couldn't help but shiver.
Holy crap, that scared her to death!
She reached the spot where everyone usually foraged for wild vegetables, but then she dared not venture any further. It was too dangerous in the pitch black. She would wait until dawn, then go in…
........................
"Ah..." Old Man Xia was so frightened by his wife's scream that he almost met his parents ahead of time. "What's wrong with you so early in the morning!" He glared at his disheveled wife.
"Old man, something terrible has happened! Where are the cabinets and table in our room?" Old Mrs. Xia looked at the room in horror. Apart from her bed, it was deserted and looked like a snow cave.
The old man sat up abruptly. Where were his things in the room?
Hearing their mother's (grandmother's) scream, the others put on their clothes and rushed straight to the main house.
"What's wrong, Mother?"
"I've been robbed! Everything in my house has been taken!" Old Mrs. Xia clutched her chest, sobbing uncontrollably. All her possessions were in the cupboard, including one item that was part of her dowry!
Which heartless bastard wiped out her whole gang?! That's going to kill her!
"Go check our granary!" Old Xia's eyes widened when he saw that his wife's keychain was also missing from her pocket.
The family rushed to the cellar, only to find it completely empty, even cleaner than when they usually checked their grain. Old Man Xia collapsed to the ground.
"Damn it! That despicable thief deserves to die a horrible death!" Old Mrs. Xia sat on the ground, cursing incessantly.
The granaries, which were not full before, are now completely empty, not even a single grain of rice has been left for them. This year's harvest won't be available for a while longer; how will they survive in the meantime?
When they came out, they noticed the uneven vegetable garden in the front yard and the kitchen, which was now just a stove. "Hurry up, check on the pigs in the backyard!" Old Mrs. Xia slapped her thigh. She planned to sell those two pigs at the end of the year to pay for her eldest grandson's wedding. There were also chickens; they laid three eggs a day, which would sell for three coins.
These are her lifeblood!
"Mother, it's all gone, all gone!" Old Master Xia stumbled back, shouting as he ran.
Gone, all gone! Except for their belongings and the child, everything else is gone!
"Waaaaah... I don't want to live anymore!!! God, you're taking my life! How am I supposed to live? How are we supposed to live?" After decades of hard work, everything was back to square one. Old Mrs. Xia felt utterly desolate.
When the villagers heard that the Xia family had been robbed, they all gathered at their doorsteps. Looking at the bare yard, they were all shocked. Who could have robbed them so thoroughly, leaving not even a single piece of firewood? Even the vegetable seedlings were uprooted! Was it really necessary to be so ruthless? What deep-seated hatred could they possibly have for the Xia family?
"Dad, where is Xia Ning?" Xia Dayu finally realized something was wrong. With such a commotion, it was impossible for Xia Ning to continue sleeping.
Old Xia kicked open Xia Ning's door, but there was no one inside. Even the broken wooden bed and the reed quilt that had been used for over ten years were gone. The room was like a cellar, with nothing but dust left.
There was no doubt that the thief was this brat! He was absolutely certain of it.
The veins on Xia Laoda's hands bulged as he gritted his teeth. If she had the guts, she should run far away from him. If he caught her, he would break her legs first.
"That little bitch, I knew she wasn't a good person since she was a child. Sure enough, after raising her for ten years, she still stole from our family!" Boss Xia said bitterly.
"She's worse than a dog! We raised her for over ten years for nothing! If I'd known, I shouldn't have taken her in; she could have starved to death long ago. She's not even human; why doesn't God strike her dead? Boss, we can't let this go! This bitch must have accomplices; they're trying to steal our house!" The old woman cursed, spitting everywhere.
"Dad, Mom, let's not panic. Our house has been robbed. We need to find the village chief right away and chase after her. Maybe we can recover some of our losses." Xia Fuxi was the smartest. His first thought was to chase after the thief as quickly as possible. With so much stuff, they definitely couldn't run fast.
Old Man Xia nodded, forcing himself to stay awake: "Yes, I'll go find the village chief now. You all stay home and tidy up." With that, he strode out.
What's there to pack? There's nothing there!
