Chapter 15 Borrowing Meat
The book describes snow falling in June, temperatures plummeting, and thousands of miles frozen over, turning the entire Great Xia Dynasty from summer to bitter cold overnight. Within a year, one-tenth of the population froze to death or starved. Even so, this cold wave was considered the one with the fewest casualties among all natural disasters. One can only imagine the state of the Great Xia Dynasty afterward; nine out of ten houses were empty—this is no exaggeration.
Worried that the cold wave would arrive suddenly and catch her off guard, leaving her no time to prepare and risking frostbite, Xia Ning felt anxious. Knowing something bad might happen, but not knowing when, made her restless. Unable to suppress her anxiety, Xia Ning could only find things to do.
Chicken soup was simmered pot after pot, water was boiled bucket after bucket, and three large buckets of brown sugar ginger tea were boiled.
After finishing the soup, she started stir-frying vegetables.
Boiled fish, boiled sliced pork, twice-cooked pork, spicy chicken, hand-shredded cabbage, pickled fish, stir-fried cured pork with garlic sprouts, minced pork and eggplant, braised eggs, stir-fried eggs with chives, steamed pork with rice flour, braised pig's trotters, sweet and sour pork, fried chicken, fried fish, fried sesame leaves, fried dumplings, fried sugar buns...
She's like a cooking machine, always busy and sweating profusely, then she falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow.
"They're cooking meat next door again, it smells so good." The old woman asked her daughter-in-law, taking a deep breath. It smelled so good that her mouth watered.
The younger woman complained, "Their house always smells of meat. I wonder how many people live there. I see smoke coming out of the chimney all day long." Who could stand the smell of food all day long?
“I’ve only ever seen one young man from that family before,” the old woman said.
“How could it be just one person? Even a pig wouldn’t eat like that.” The woman thought her mother-in-law must have misjudged her.
"Maybe so. This family is incredibly wealthy; even landlords wouldn't eat like this."
"Exactly." If you don't have money, how can you build such a high wall covered in ceramic tiles? It's obviously for keeping out thieves. Without anything, what kind of thieves can you keep out?
"Mom, I want to eat meat! I want to eat meat!"
An eight-year-old boy, whose clothes were so dirty that their original color was no longer visible and whose nose was covered in snot, was clinging to a woman's leg and throwing a tantrum.
The woman slapped him: "You think you can just chop me up and feed me? Your father hasn't given the family a single penny this month, yet he's eating meat while there's barely any rice left!"
After the woman finished speaking, she patted the child a few more times, trying to vent all her resentment on the child.
"Waaaaah..." The child lay on the ground, crying loudly.
"Why did you hit him?" The old woman felt sorry for her grandson, squatted down, and pulled him into her arms. "Qing'er, don't cry, Grandma will go next door to borrow some meat for you!"
Zhang glanced at her mother-in-law without saying a word, letting her do as she pleased. If she could borrow the meat, all the better; if not, it wouldn't be a loss. She hadn't tasted meat for over a month and was really craving it.
The old woman, carrying an empty bowl, came to Xia Ning's house.
"Bang bang bang..."
"Bang bang bang..."
For the first time, someone knocked on her front door. Xia Ning frowned. The cold wave hadn't even started yet, who could it be? Nobody knew she lived here?
Xia Ning opened the courtyard gate.
An old woman, whom I didn't recognize, with shifty eyes, tried to sneak into the yard, but Xia Ning blocked her view.
"Young man, where are your parents?"
"busy?"
"Here's the thing, my grandson is so tempted by the smell of your meat that he's crying, but we didn't buy any meat today. Could you lend me a bowl of meat first? I'll buy some tomorrow and pay you back."
The old woman had an expression that said, "I'm only asking you for a favor."
Who do you think you are? Coming to my door asking to borrow meat? You've got some nerve! If you don't have money, don't eat it!
"I have a lot of people at home, and there's not enough to eat." With that, she pushed the person toward the door.
The old woman protested, "How is it not enough? Your house smells of meat every day, and the chimney never goes out. Are you trying to fool this old woman? Where are your parents? Let them come out. I want to ask how you raised your little kid, who's full of lies!"
Xia Ning ignored her, pushed her out of the yard, slammed the door shut, and locked it.
The old woman, holding an empty bowl, stared at the tightly closed courtyard gate and cursed, "You heartless bastards! There's no justice in this world! How dare you treat an old woman like this? Aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning?"
As he spoke, he plopped down at the gate of the courtyard, pointing to the sky and cursing the earth.
Xia Ning ignored her; she'd go home when she got tired of yelling. Social order still existed; if she went out, Xia Ning might accidentally get into a scam and get accused, and in the end, Xia Ning would be the one who suffered.
If she keeps being so sarcastic after the cold snap, she wouldn't mind sending her on her way.
It also served as a reminder that she had gone too far lately. She hadn't expected that even from so far away, her neighbor could smell it—was she a dog?
Tomorrow, she'll just cook some porridge and steam some buns. She can't cook any more elaborate dishes; the cooked food in her space is enough for her to eat for decades. It's just that she's afraid of natural disasters and can't stay idle.
"Why is it snowing? My goodness, it really is snowing! Is even the heavens standing up for me?"
Snowing?
Xia Ning rushed outside and looked at the snow falling heavily. At that moment, her heart calmed down.
What's meant to happen will happen. She's prepared enough. If she still dies after all this, then she deserves it.
The old woman is incredibly determined; she's still cursing outside the door. If she's so capable, she shouldn't leave; she'll be the first one frozen into an ice sculpture.
Xia Ning lit the kang (a heated brick bed) and warmed the walls, then extinguished the fire in the stove. She put everything in the kitchen away. From then on, her only areas of activity were the bedroom and the bathroom.
After being so busy for so long, she can finally relax and hibernate comfortably. How wonderful!
Seeing that the gate to the courtyard remained tightly closed and the snowflakes were falling heavier and heavier, the old woman couldn't take it anymore after sneezing for the fifth time. She spat, stamped her feet, hugged herself tightly, and ran home.
Good heavens, snow in June! Who has suffered such a great injustice?
Everyone thought the snow was just an accident and would stop soon. This snow only provided more fodder for gossip; was there really an injustice? The merchant, seeing the heavy snowfall, sighed deeply. Sure enough, it was a cold disaster. He once again instructed his family not to go out and not to tell anyone that they had grain at home.
No one expected that the heavy snow would fall for five whole days without showing any sign of stopping.
The heavens are like a funnel, with snowflakes constantly falling down.
Xia Ning spends most of her time in her bedroom except for going out to collect snow once in the morning and once in the evening.
That morning, while shoveling snow from the roof, she forgot to look around. All she could see was a vast expanse of white; there was nothing else.
Even if she was sure no one was around, she never dared to collect snow on the roof; she would shovel it into the yard and collect it together with the snow in the yard.
With temperatures that are at least below -10 degrees Celsius, she had no idea how the unprepared people could save themselves and get through this severe cold.
These matters should be handled by the government; they have nothing to do with her. After collecting the snow, she jogged twenty laps around the yard, practiced swishing her knife 300 times, cleaned up the mule droppings, gave them extra food, and then went back inside to wash up and make breakfast.
The original owner of this body had worked hard for many years, so her physique was already quite good. However, when fleeing famine in the future, a good physique alone will not be enough.
Since returning to the courtyard, she has been exercising every day, practicing wielding and chopping with a knife, so that she won't be too passive when she needs to kill someone or be attacked by a crowd.
The space contained countless stones, which were crucial to her survival.
