Chapter 7: Results of the Diagnostic Test

Chapter VII

After a midday break, the exams resumed. The afternoon exam was in mathematics, a very crucial subject where most students' performance diverged.

The reason why mathematics is so important is that it only has two answers: right or wrong. Unlike Chinese and English, where you can sometimes get a few points even if your answer is close to correct, mathematics never does.

If it's correct, you get full marks, but you might lose one or two points because your answer wasn't formatted correctly. If it's incorrect, you get zero marks.

Moreover, math problems are mostly challenging, and many students lose too many points in this subject, leading to a drop in their overall score.

Like most other subjects, math is Yang Zhuo's weak point compared to other subjects.

After receiving the math test paper, Yang Zhuo knew that his math score would definitely not be very high, but he could still get 120 points.

In the examination room, while most students were still racking their brains to figure out how to answer the questions, Yang Zhuo had already started answering them.

Although the questions were difficult, most of them were still easy for Yang Zhuo.

Unfortunately, after Yang Zhuo finished the previous questions, he was stopped by the last math question.

Just as Yang Zhuo was struggling with the last question, the students sitting around him, seeing him work on it from beginning to end, couldn't help but feel a mixture of surprise and anticipation.

The shock came from the fact that Yang Zhuo had managed to complete so many questions in such a short time. Compared to this amazing person, he was practically trash!

As for anticipation, they were hoping that Yang Zhuo could let them copy something, even just one of his answers would be fine.

Of course, many people were also wondering to themselves, "Which class is this genius from? I've never heard of him before?"

Ignoring the thoughts and gazes of the other students, Yang Zhuo continued to ponder and tackle the last problem...

If Yang Zhuo didn't get all the previous questions right, and he couldn't solve the last 15-point question, his math score was predictable.

Just like with Chinese, Yang Zhuo did fairly well on the English test the next morning, except for the listening section which gave him a headache.

English is very different from other subjects, the biggest difference being that it has a 30-point listening comprehension section. Many students may get full marks on the test, but when it comes to the listening section, they are basically doomed.

Of course, this is not the students' fault; the main problem lies in the English learning environment. To address this issue, the Jianghai Municipal Education Bureau and major high schools in Jianghai have increased their training in English listening comprehension to avoid the embarrassment of students not understanding English. Even so, English listening comprehension has become a disaster in English exams.

Yang Zhuo had no confidence in the listening section, so he didn't care about the listening comprehension and instead focused his energy on the later questions. To be honest, the English exam questions weren't very difficult, and Yang Zhuo could answer them all. After carefully completing the questions, he filled in the answer sheet and started writing the essay. When he finished the essay, there was still about half an hour left before the end of the exam.

Similar to math, Yang Zhuo was unsure about two questions in the afternoon's combined science exam, but he could guarantee that he would get most of the other questions right and score above 220.

However, since this was the last exam, Yang Zhuo did not rush to leave. Instead, he worked on the questions seriously. After finishing all the questions and checking them, there were less than ten minutes left before the end of the exam.

Ten minutes later, the mock exam finally came to an end with a piercing electric bell.

……

The next day, Yang Zhuo and Wang Qiang arrived very early. Although they knew they had done well on the test, Yang Zhuo was still very excited. He knew that his previous grades were not good enough for his teachers and classmates. His best result was 29th in the class.

Today is the day the results are released. The students were very nervous during the two days of exams, as this exam almost determined their college entrance examination scores. The senior teachers were also working hard and graded the papers overnight. This was the last major exam before the college entrance examination, and the subsequent exams were basically the responsibility of the teachers of each subject.

It's extremely rare for someone who consistently performs poorly in regular exams to suddenly excel in the college entrance exam. Most students perform as expected, and many even underperform due to nervousness. Therefore, almost everyone—teachers, students, and parents—is closely watching the results of this exam.

"Yang Zi, can you really get into the top ten in the class?" Wang Qiang asked Yang Zhuo.

Faced with Wang Qiang's questioning, Yang Zhuo casually said, "Didn't I say that I want to test my true level in this exam? Don't worry, I should be in the top ten. Besides, the results will be out soon."

"You're really good at talking big, Yang Zhuo. You really think you're so great. You want to get into the top ten in the class? With your garbage grades, do you really think you're capable of that?"

A disdainful voice rang out; it was Luo Hao, who had made the bet with Yang Zhuo earlier.

"We'll find out soon enough whether it's good enough or not, but are you ready to shout three times?" Yang Zhuo said with a slight smile.

Don't worry about how much fun you have now, there will be a time when you'll be crying!

"Yang Zhuo, you're really confident. But let's see how you get out of this mess, hmph!" Luo Hao sneered.

His voice was loud enough for all the students in the class to hear him, and they all looked at the two of them.

Everyone knew about the bet between Luo Hao and Yang Zhuo, but no one thought Yang Zhuo would win. After all, Yang Zhuo's previous achievements were obvious to all, and the boys were even more happy to see Yang Zhuo lose face because of Chen Sihan.

That's just human nature. When people see others doing things they want to do but don't dare to, they're usually jealous and hope the other person makes a fool of themselves.

Yang Zhuo ignored Luo Hao, and Luo Hao did not provoke him again.

The preparatory bell rang, and then the homeroom teacher, Ms. Liu, walked into the classroom with light steps. The first thing she saw upon entering the classroom was Yang Zhuo, who was writing something with his head down.

"Students, the results of this diagnostic test are in." Teacher Liu's voice was light and cheerful. "Most of the students in our class did well on this test. Of course, some of you have also made great progress. I'm happy to see that you all did so well. If there are no surprises, your college entrance exam scores will be similar. Of course, there are a few students who didn't do so well because they were nervous. To those students, I want to say, why are you nervous? The college entrance exam doesn't define your life. You can always try again. So, relax and I look forward to you conquering yourselves in the college entrance exam and creating your own records."

At this point, Teacher Liu's voice rose involuntarily. Having been a high school teacher for over twenty years, Teacher Liu knew very well what students needed at this time: not repeated reminders to study hard, but to do her best to relax their minds. Only in this way could students do well on the exam.

"Alright, let's announce the results now," Teacher Liu said with a smile. "In this diagnostic test, our class had the highest average score among all science classes, which makes me very happy. Moreover, some students have made great progress, which surprised me."

Ms. Liu's words surprised everyone, and they began to whisper among themselves. Ms. Liu smiled and did not interrupt them. After nearly half a minute, she tapped the table with the blackboard eraser and said, "Alright, now I will announce the results. Chen Sihan, with a total score of 705, is first in the class and first in the grade. Let's congratulate Chen Sihan."

"Clap clap..."

Applause erupted in the classroom, and almost everyone turned their attention to Chen Sihan.

"Thank you, teacher."

Chen Sihan thanked him calmly, then took the test paper and returned to her seat.

"Chen Hai, 675, second in the class, fourth in the grade. Let's congratulate Chen Hai."

"Clap clap..."

"The third place goes to..."

"The fourth place goes to..."

"Fifth place goes to Luo Hao, with 607 points, ranking seventeenth in the grade," Teacher Liu said.

Luo Hao stood up, went forward to take the test paper, and looked at Yang Zhuo triumphantly when he returned. Yang Zhuo ignored him and smiled.
