Thanos's biological daughter in period fiction
Chapter 28 Wine Jar
No one understood where his nervousness came from. They knew it was a virus, but bacteria and viruses also have a certain pathogenesis process, so it was impossible for it to cause an immediate reaction upon contact.
While moving things, he noticed a spot in the corner of the room where the wine jars were stored, blocked by two bricks. He suspected something was amiss there, so he planned to dig it up after moving all the jars.
As the last jar was being carried out, one of the team members lost his footing and nearly fell. This terrified Xia Jixuan: "My ancestor, please hold on tight, please..."
Xia Jixuan had been preparing all along, wondering if he could catch the marble before going to sleep if the jar broke. Another possibility was to drag the two people closest to the plate away before the jar shattered.
He couldn't gamble with his brother's life; he had to try even the slightest chance of changing the outcome.
"Hey, Captain, do you think I'm that unreliable? Besides, it was just an accidental step on a pebble. We know it's dangerous, we'll all be careful." The team member who had just stepped on the pebble said seriously, steadying his hand.
After all the jars were moved out, Xia Jixuan took a small shovel he had left at the scene and began digging up the two bricks he had his eye on.
He had no idea what these people were thinking. The entire cave was made of earthen walls, yet they deliberately placed two bricks in the corner of these walls. It was no wonder that they aroused suspicion. Although the two bricks were covered with soil of the same color as the walls, whether it was due to the passage of time or something else, the gap between the two bricks was clearly visible at a glance.
His daughter only mentioned the plates, not the wall cracks, so he figured it should be fine. But after he finished digging, he realized he was a little hesitant to continue.
After thinking for a moment, he took out two pairs of gloves from his pocket, put them on, closed his eyes, and reached into the small hole.
There was nothing thrilling; all that was there was a diary and a brown paper bag containing something unknown.
Among the people who led the team, he held the highest position, so after they came out of the cave, Xiong Ying asked him to open it and take a look.
They need to know exactly what this is, what information it contains, in order to report back.
"Okay, Xiong Ying, hold this paper bag for me first. I want to take a look at the contents of this diary..." Xia Jixuan carefully opened the diary after turning the contents over and over in his hands several times and finding nothing unusual.
What met his eyes were characters with severed arms and legs, crooked and illegible. Xia Jixuan was dumbfounded; this…
"These are the Japanese soldiers' writings, I can't understand them..." Although Xia Jixuan had gone to school, he had never actually learned the Japanese writing system. At first glance, he could only understand a few Chinese characters...
“Then take a look at this…” Xiong Ying held up the brown paper bag in her hand.
Xia Jixuan opened the brown paper bag, inside which was a stack of research materials, as well as a lot of Japanese writing. He couldn't understand these materials at all, but since they had brought an expert with them, he quickly asked the expert who had been dispatched to take a look at the materials.
Of course, he was only allowed to see the top one; the others had to be submitted and processed by those above.
"Captain Xia, Captain Xiong, these are some research materials on bacteria and viruses. If these things are in these jars, then they absolutely must not be opened..." The researcher became very excited when he saw the names on them. He had seen this kind of virus in his teacher's manuscripts; it spreads extremely quickly, and contact with it would be certain death.
Suddenly, I remembered that Xia Jixuan had been telling everyone to be careful, to be careful. Did he find out something?
He stared at Xia Jixuan with suspicion: "Does the captain know what's in here?"
It's unlikely. This virus has never existed here before; it's always been discovered and studied by people in other countries.
His teacher had encountered someone asking him a question before, and he wrote down his notes after analyzing the situation.
"I don't know, but I know they definitely didn't brew wine. After all, brewing wine requires a stove and a large pot, but there's none here. And there are no signs of fire here either. I reasonably guess that although people lived here, they never cooked here." Xia Jixuan looked at the research team's books. He certainly wouldn't tell his daughter that there was poison in the food.
Of course, these were conclusions he reached after exploring the area. Before his daughter told him, he had guessed what was inside, but he absolutely did not believe that it contained alcohol.
"Alright, the chests in the other rooms contain gold, silver, and antiques. Except for the first chest, which has been opened, the others haven't been opened; let's just keep them locked." There's really a lot of stuff. Two of the rooms have kang beds (heated brick beds).
There weren't many things in either room, probably because they had already moved out when they left. There were still two cabinets, but inside were some tattered strips of cloth and two quilts, nothing else.
They were allowed to take out the quilt and use it, since those blankets need to be kept separate, otherwise if they were to be accidentally bumped and broken, it would be a big problem.
Hearing the researcher's words, everyone became even more cautious. They used all the available cloth and blankets to make partitions for the jars, but there were too many jars, and two blankets were simply not enough.
"I'll go get them. We just moved, and all the blankets are new. We have two old mattresses and two old quilts." Xia Jixuan wanted to replace their old quilts and get two new ones from Jin Yu Ju, along with some duvet covers. Anyway, they put the blankets away in the closet every morning after getting up, so even if someone came to visit, they wouldn't see them.
"Okay, then you go ahead. We'll tidy up the things here and then put the wall back up." That's all we can do for now. After all, it's not easy to suddenly go to town to buy quilts, and cotton isn't readily available. Besides, they don't have that much time to waste.
Xia Jixuan rushed home, explained to his wife that he was going with the team this time, and took all the old bedding with him. Wrapped inside these old bedding were steamed cornbreads that Liu Fangmei had just made; they were still warm.
After dinner, they waited until it got dark, around 8 p.m., before leaving. By then it was completely dark, pitch black, and they could walk without lights as long as they knew the route well.
From the time they arrived until today, when they have moved all their belongings, they have kept this place hidden for four whole days. Apart from Xia Jixuan and Xia Qingshu, no one in the village knows that anyone has been here.
