Thanos's biological daughter in period fiction
Chapter 25 The person is gone, but the building is not empty
After confirming several times that there were no signs of recent human activity, he moved all the dead tree branches outside the barrier.
After removing the branches, he realized that the entrance wasn't just covered with branches; there was also a wall made of mud and stones. It seemed that people had moved out or no longer needed to use the area, which was why they had blocked the entrance.
Xia Jixuan lightly stepped on the ground and sprang up, sitting on the top of the wall in just one second. Looking inside from the top, the place seemed like a small alley, but it didn't feel like it was naturally formed.
After all, it's impossible for a place like this to naturally form this pattern unless it splits open automatically after an earthquake.
In their Red Star Commune, Xia Jixuan's memories from childhood consisted of only two earthquakes, and neither of them were very large; they were just aftershocks from earthquakes in other places.
Xia Jixuan touched the wall and found that it had been plastered with lime; a layer of grayish-yellow powder remained on his hands. Deep inside the alley, there were four or five caves of varying sizes. Because of the vast mountains in the area, even with so many caves dug underground, they remained undiscovered by outsiders.
Further in, he discovered a dried-up hand-cranked well. Judging from its dilapidated state, it hadn't been used for a while, as the handle was broken.
There was a door at the entrance of the cave. The door was made of very good materials, a very sturdy iron door, and it was locked. The outside of the door was bricked up, leaving only a place to unlock it.
Xia Jixuan guessed that something must be hidden inside, otherwise, why would they have covered it up so tightly when no one was here?
It seems the person is really gone. To protect the things inside, they simply built the door up with bricks.
Xia Jixuan reached out and touched the bricks. They were covered with a thick layer of dust. After confirming that no one was inside, he decided to dig one out to see what was inside.
Inside his jade dwelling, he found the tool shed and, after rummaging around, discovered tools for breaking stones—perfect for breaking down walls.
He was incredibly fast; he knocked all the bricks off one wall in just half an hour. Reaching for the lock hanging on the iron gate, he quickly considered its structure. Just as he was deciding whether to use a hairpin or wire, he unconsciously broke the lock.
Holding the deformed lock in his hand, Xia Jixuan felt awkward for a second. He was still thinking about things the way he used to, forgetting that he had become incredibly strong ever since drinking the well water from Qingyu Residence.
He just unconsciously squeezed the lock, and it became so deformed that it couldn't be repaired.
Just as he was about to push the door open, he remembered the inhumane germ warfare research conducted by the Japanese. For his own health, he armed himself from head to toe, wearing four layers of masks and three layers of gloves plus a thin film to prevent any accidents.
Knowing there was no light source inside, he took a white light bulb from the tool shed before going in. This bulb could be turned on without a wire, was much brighter than a regular light bulb, and its brightness could be adjusted.
The light in his hand was on the dimmest setting, and as soon as the light came on, the whole room was instantly illuminated. You could see everything at a glance: the entire room was filled with jars, the kind that hold 50 jin (25 catties) of wine, and in the corner there were two large water vats, big enough to hold two children.
The clay jar was labeled with the character for "wine," but Xia Jixuan didn't really believe it was wine. However, he wasn't about to risk his life. Not knowing what it was, he didn't intend to open it.
After he finished exploring all the caves, he would check what was in the other areas and look for any documents or notes. He wanted to find something that could prove who owned these things.
It took him two hours to open all the other doors, though he hadn't managed to turn all the locks. The boxes next to the wine jars were quite striking; these were boxes Xia Jixuan recognized—they were weapon boxes.
He violently tore open the wooden strips on top of a box, and all he saw were brand new sniper rifles. What excited him even more was that he found a brand new machine gun at the back of the box.
Xia Jixuan's hands trembled as he looked at the brand-new machine guns; this excited him even more than when his daughter was born.
The United States only developed its latest lightweight machine gun three years ago, and it's extremely expensive. Given their current debt situation, even if they pooled the resources of the entire nation to buy it, they might not be able to sell it to them.
But there are so many here. He needs to calm down and then call the military region from the county town. The matter is very serious; it's not something he can decide alone. He has to report it to his superiors. He also has to hold this place firmly and prevent anyone from approaching before the troops arrive.
After closing the door again and locking it with his own lock, he climbed up from the bottom of the cliff. He went home first, without saying anything, only that there was an emergency and he had to go to the town post office. He didn't know when he would be back and told them not to wait for him to come back for dinner.
"Wife, if anything happens in the village, have the two boys look after your daughter. Although she looks like she's healed, I'm still worried. She needs to rest more, after all, she lost so much blood..." Xia Jixuan still felt sorry for his daughter and wanted her to rest at home as much as possible.
"I understand. You can go now if you have something to do. I'll take care of things at home. Remember to eat." Liu Fangmei didn't know what he had to do, but there were some things she wouldn't pry into.
Xia Jixuan didn't even have time to eat when he got back; he ran ahead very quickly. Once he reached the outskirts of the village, he took a bicycle directly from Qingyu Residence.
They are not far from the town; it takes an hour by oxcart or half an hour by bicycle.
Xia Jixuan pedaled his bicycle incredibly fast. There was no other way; he had to make the call from the post office. So he went directly to the town's office building, showed his identification, and made the call from a separate room in the town's office building.
Making a phone call these days is a real hassle; you have to get transferred by an operator. Xia Jixuan was sweating profusely and breathing heavily.
"I am Tang Zhiqiang..."
"There's an emergency on the leadership's end, and I need an environment with absolute secrecy."
No sooner had he said that than Uncle Xixi's voice came from the other end, and a few seconds later Tang Guoqiang responded again: "It's safe now."
"Flying Eagle Squad Leader, Xia Jixuan reporting for duty. I discovered a cave with many weapons on the mountain behind our village, as well as some jars of wine sealed with yellow mud. However, I'm not sure if they actually contain wine, so I haven't dared to open them. There are also three other jars that are locked, but I haven't gone in to check them. Please provide instructions, sir..."
