Chapter 12 Uncle
The couple's conversation didn't disturb Xia Yutang, who was fast asleep in bed. Xia Yutang was dreaming about her past life again; her brows were furrowed, and she tried to speak, but it was as if something was blocking her throat, preventing her from making a sound.
In her past life, she was raised by her uncle, a retired soldier who had never married due to injuries. He adopted her when her parents were going through a messy divorce.
Although her uncle was injured, he had connections and a decent job. At that time, she didn't know that her uncle was sick and had been taking medicine and seeing doctors.
It wasn't until she got into university and received her acceptance letter that her uncle seemed to feel his mission was complete and finally collapsed in peace. When she rushed to the hospital ward with her acceptance letter, she only had time to say a few words to her uncle.
Her uncle told her that he had already deposited her tuition and living expenses into her account, and that she could focus on her studies. Standing next to her uncle was a man in a suit; her uncle said he was a lawyer.
Her uncle asked her to sign, and she did. At that point, she was crying so much that she couldn't think straight. After she finished signing and the video was taken, her uncle held her hand and breathed his last.
After handling her uncle's funeral arrangements, she learned that her uncle had already planned ahead and thought of all the follow-up matters for her.
The house, savings, and subsequent compensation from her uncle's workplace—all of it was already hers when she signed the papers.
After her eldest uncle's funeral, while her younger uncle was at work, her nominal mother tried to move into her eldest uncle's house. She also wanted to take away the car her eldest uncle used to drive. Just as they were arguing, the lawyer arrived with his entourage.
The lawyer was a friend of her uncle. Knowing that she was going to university in the capital, her uncle's friend helped her rent out her house and sell her car.
That car was quite old. It was bought when my uncle first started working. One of his friends wanted to get a new car, and my uncle thought it would be more convenient to have a car to pick her up and drop her off at school in windy or rainy weather, so he bought it.
She hadn't seen her parents since starting university, to avoid them bothering her. After graduating, she stayed in the capital to work. Before coming here, she had been working for over four years and had even bought a small house in the suburbs of the capital, paying in full. Her uncle had left her a considerable amount of money, and she also had savings from her job.
Last year, she sold the house her uncle had left her. She could have rented it out for over 2000 yuan a month, but her mother wouldn't give up and kept pestering her. The noise made the potential tenants unwilling to rent anymore, so she had no choice but to ask her uncle's lawyer friend to sell the house.
Although this place is in the suburbs, and it takes an hour and a half by subway to get to her workplace, in the capital city, an hour and a half by subway is not really that far.
The apartment she used to rent wasn't close to her workplace, and it cost six or seven thousand yuan a month in rent. She figured she might as well just buy one; she had the money, and she thought this little courtyard was quite nice.
The main building of the courtyard is a newly built two-story house. The family has elderly members, so they had set aside space in the yard for growing vegetables. They had also originally planned to build a small chicken coop. However, the male head of the household was transferred to a new job, so they had to rent it out in the mornings and it has remained vacant ever since.
As time went by, it fell into disrepair. The owner of this house seemed to be someone my uncle knew.
Of course, even if it's a bit deserted in Kyoto, it's still worth a lot of money. Buying this courtyard cost her 80% of her savings, and she used the rest to renovate it, with her uncle contributing a considerable amount as well.
After much effort, the yard was finally renovated. Chickens were bought, vegetables were planted, and a lot of farm tools and seeds were placed in the storage room, ready to grow whatever we need to eat in the future.
Who knew that on his way home from get off work, he would accidentally step on someone else's construction debris and end up crushing himself to death.
I wonder if the house she just bought just benefited her mother. It's so frustrating. I should have made a will so that her uncle, who works in the lab, could collect her estate when he's collecting her body.
After graduating with his doctorate, her uncle stayed in the national laboratory. She only met her uncle a total of five times. Once was when her parents were getting divorced, and her eldest uncle brought her uncle to her side and asked her to come over.
The uncle felt he would spend his whole life in the lab, so he didn't adopt her. He didn't know when he would be able to leave the lab and raise a child; he simply didn't have the energy.
The second time was when she took the college entrance exam, and her two uncles accompanied her to the exam hall. The third time was when her eldest uncle passed away; he rushed as fast as he could but still couldn't see him one last time.
There was nothing he could do about his anger and frustration. After his eldest uncle's funeral, when his mother came to take things, he used his position as the second eldest brother to give her a good scolding. Because of his tight schedule, he went back to work after the funeral.
Two months later, she saw him for the fourth time when she was receiving her inheritance. Fearing that her mother would cause trouble again while she was handling the inheritance procedures, her uncle accompanied her. After finishing the procedures, he was urgently summoned back to his workplace.
She had told her uncle about selling the house, and he told her to sell it directly and buy another one in the city where she worked. The sale was also facilitated by a friend of her eldest uncle. When she bought the house, her uncle appeared again. He thought the house was nice and close to his lab, making it convenient for him to take care of it.
She just hadn't expected that her house would be renovated so soon before she arrived here. Actually, her father here looks a lot like her maternal uncle, which is why she accepted this villainous father so quickly.
In her past life, she wanted to call her uncle "Dad," but by the time she finally managed to call him "Dad," it was just as his life was about to end.
She felt that her coming here might be God's way of letting her make up for the regrets of her previous life.
We hope that the first kind person to see her body will notify her uncle, as he is the first contact in her phone's address book.
I miss her house so much, the house she spent so much effort renovating. When she was planning to use it as her retirement home, her uncle even brought a lot of people over.
Her storage room was already filled with gifts brought by the people her uncle had brought, and she hadn't even seen what was inside yet.
Judging from the ages of those people, she had a feeling that her uncle brought them here to arrange a blind date for her, since they were all about the same age as her.
