Chapter 64 Going into the mountains to find someone
Not far from the edge of the mountains, Lan Qingqing decided to leave her things here and go home to ask for help.
The two of them found a cave and released the tiger and wild boar inside. Since they were going to need help anyway, Lan Qingqing simply left her basket and sack there and headed back. That way, it would be easier.
Lan Qingqing found some weeds to cover it up. Although generally no one would come into the outer area of this deep mountain, it was hard to guarantee that someone wouldn't come in for a stroll out of boredom. Just in case, it was safer to hide it well.
The two hurried home, but before they had gone down the mountain, they witnessed this scene.
"I'm sorry to have worried everyone," Lan Qingqing said sincerely.
Seeing that the Lan family girl was alright, the villagers all went home, as their families were also anxiously waiting for them.
Since everyone is alright, there's no need for them to go deep into the mountains. They should hurry home now so their families can rest assured.
Lan Qingqing told the village chief about her trip to the mountains to find medicinal herbs. The villagers were still unaware that Lan Qingqing was studying medicine with an old doctor in town. The village chief was quite surprised to hear that Lan Qingqing had gone into the mountains to collect herbs.
I never expected that the eldest daughter of the Lan family would actually be learning medicine from the old doctor. What an incredible opportunity!
Even in an era of limited medical resources, doctors were still highly respected.
Lan Qingqing walked up to her mother and said, "I'm sorry, Mother, I shouldn't have kept it from you, but I have a reason I can't avoid going. This herb is very important to me."
Mother Lan said painfully, "No matter how important these herbs are, can they be more important than your life? If your master hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known you were carrying multiple babies. Don't you know how dangerous these deep mountains are?"
Lan Qingqing realized that her mother already knew. "Mother, since you know, you must also know that my pregnancy is extremely risky. This herb is my only chance of survival."
"I didn't want you to worry about me, that's why I kept it from you," Lan Qingqing explained to her mother.
Lan's mother was heartbroken to hear this. Why did her daughter have to suffer all the hardships?
Seeing that her mother's tears were about to fall again, Lan Qingqing quickly said, "Mother, I found the herbs, and I also saw my maternal grandmother."
Mother Lan was shocked! "Grandmother, what's going on?" Mother Lan looked at Father Lan, who was also somewhat bewildered. "What grandmother? I don't know anything about her!"
Lan Qingqing's intention was simply to drop a bombshell and distract them.
Lan Qingqing asked Lan Xiaotian, "Were you planning to go deep into the mountains?"
Lan Xiaotian nodded and said, "Mm."
Then have them come with me now. I've found some things in the mountains and will find some people to help me carry them back.
The village chief was still there, and there were two uncles from the village who were called over to help Lan Qingqing.
The group set off in a grand procession. Lan Xiaotian asked Lan Qingqing curiously, "What is it, sister? Why are so many people going?"
It's good stuff, you'll see when you get there.
The group consisted of about ten people: Lan Qingqing, Lan Xiaotian, Feng Caidie, and several helpers from the family. Lan Qingqing hadn't originally planned to go, but considering it was the outskirts of the mountains, she worried about potential dangers from wild animals. She felt more at ease having them accompany her.
Lan's father, Lan Xiaoyu, Lan Xiaoya, and Lan Qingqing were not allowed to come along.
Actually, wild animals are rarely seen on the outskirts of the deep mountains. That tiger must have been chasing those two wild boars to get here. It just so happened to run into Lan Qingqing and her companion; why not just catch them both? Unexpectedly, instead of earning food, it became her food. What a cruel twist of fate! Lan Qingqing sighed inwardly.
Upon reaching the outskirts of the deep mountains, Lan Qingqing parted the weeds, revealing a small cave entrance. She first took out two baskets. The village chief and the others saw the contents of the baskets; they resembled blocks of salt, but weren't quite. Lan Qingqing then took out three burlap sacks, which weren't very heavy.
Then came the main event. Lan Qingqing and Feng Caidie worked together, first dragging out a wild boar. The village chief was shocked; this adult wild boar must have weighed at least 400 jin (approximately 200 catties). Then came another wild boar. Seeing that Lan Qingqing wasn't going to stop, the village chief and the others wondered if there was more. A moment later, Lan Qingqing dragged out an adult tiger, a massive tiger weighing at least 1800 jin (approximately 500-600 kg).
Everyone was so shocked they couldn't close their jaws. Lan Qingqing and Feng Caidie went back into the cave.
The village chief stammered: "What else...what else...what else?"
Lan Qingqing and Feng Caidie came out of the cave, carrying water bags, machetes and other tools.
Lan Qingqing said somewhat awkwardly: That's it.
Lan Xiaotian followed Mu Mu's words and said: "That's it."
Lan Qingqing was speechless. This kid looked like he was scared out of his wits.
Lan Qingqing looked at the others, all of whom looked terrified, which made her younger brother seem less out of place.
They all looked utterly terrified. The village chief was the first to recover, and said slowly, "If I had known, I should have brought more people."
After the initial shock, the group began to tie up the wild boar and tiger with ropes. Working in groups, they carried the tiger and wild boar down the mountain.
When the Lan family returned home, they were first shocked, then terrified. Their own daughter had actually killed such a ferocious beast. More than a decade earlier, several young men from the village had gone hunting in the mountains. They encountered a tiger, and none of them survived; they were all devoured.
Lan's mother still feels terrified when she thinks about it now.
Mr. Lan told Mrs. Lan to quickly put away all the sacks and baskets that Lan Qingqing had brought back. A crowd of onlookers had gathered outside the Lan family's house.
Mr. Lan still remembered what Lan Qingqing had said about going into the mountains to find herbs. There must be some of the herbs Lan Qingqing mentioned there. There are many people in the family now. If anything happens to the herbs that his daughter risked her life to find, they would never forgive themselves, even if they died a hundred times.
Upon hearing what Lan's father said, Lan's mother remembered Lan Qingqing's purpose for going into the mountains, and quickly packed everything away.
Since they didn't know which of those were the medicinal herbs their daughter had mentioned, they simply packed them up in two baskets and three sacks.
Lan Qingqing had several helpers in her household clean up the wild boar and tiger.
Lan Qingqing called over the village chief, Uncle Village Chief, and the uncles and elders who were just about to go into the mountains to help search for the missing people. "Do you know which families in the village it is?"
I'll have Xiaoyu share some of the meat with everyone in a bit, to thank our uncles and elders.
The village chief thought for a moment, then named the dozen or so families from the village who had come to help. Lan Xiaotian and his father silently took notes.
Lan's parents also went to help clean up, and the village chief and others went along to help too. It was a tiger! This was something to brag about for a lifetime. In the future, they could say to their descendants, "I once killed a tiger, even if it was dead, it was still killing a tiger."
Lan Qingqing instructed: Keep the intestines, don't throw them away.
Although no one understood the purpose of intestines, they still did as instructed.
The Lan family courtyard was bustling with activity, while the Lan family mansion was in complete chaos. At first, the Lan family members were secretly relieved that Lan Qingqing had disappeared.
Grandma Lan went to the market to buy meat to celebrate. Before she even entered the house, she heard that Lan Qingqing had killed a tiger and two wild boars. She couldn't sit still any longer and immediately went to the Lan family to demand the boars and tiger back.
