Chapter 147 The Coldest Winter Month
Just two days later, the transfer order from Kyoto arrived, along with the new magistrate.
Min Nancheng must complete the handover within half a month.
While others are all smiles when they get promoted, it's rare to see someone like Min Nancheng, who kept a gloomy face the whole time. Even the coldest winter day wasn't as cold as Min Nancheng's face.
The happiest person was none other than Old Madam Min. Finally, her son could get rid of that vixen. It was just a pity that her grandson would lose his mother at such a young age.
Madam Min has already begun planning how to get rid of Lan Qingqing. As for her own grandchildren, she will naturally take them with her.
Min Nancheng went straight back to Pear Blossom Village that day. Lan Qingqing was a little shocked to see Min Nancheng return.
"How did your mother let you come here?" Lan Qingqing asked curiously.
She's been busy packing these past few days and hasn't had time for me. I'm going to Licheng to take up my new post in a few days, so you and the child should come with me! Min Nancheng said.
Lan Qingqing asked, somewhat puzzled, "You got promoted?"
Min Nancheng answered truthfully, "Yes, I just received the transfer order a few days ago. Prefect of Licheng."
Although Lan Qingqing wasn't very happy, a promotion was a good thing, so she didn't want to spoil the mood and said, "So what are your plans for your mother? You know I don't get along with her."
Min Nancheng gently took Lan Qingqing's hand and said, "I'll handle things with my mother later, don't worry, I won't let you suffer any injustice."
Lan Qingqing was somewhat skeptical that Min Nancheng could handle family matters well. From her observation, Min Nancheng was a very filial person, and she herself wasn't one to suffer losses. The best way to avoid conflict was for each of them to stay out of it. Lan Qingqing cleared her throat and said, "I know you're very filial, but I don't want you to have a conflict with your mother because of me. The best solution is for your mother and me to avoid each other. You and your mother go first. After some time, when your mother's opinion changes, it won't be too late for me to go over."
Min Nancheng said, "Don't worry, Qingqing, I won't make things difficult for you. I know my mother has a bit of a temper, but she's not a bad person. She just has some prejudice against you. If she gets to know you better, she'll definitely like you."
Lan Qingqing sighed softly and said, "That's just your opinion. The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship has been like this since ancient times, and it can't be changed overnight. Right now, I don't want to compromise myself to please your mother. So let's give each other some time."
Qingqing, that's my mother. Can you try to help me, for our future? Can I handle things with my mother?
Lan Qingqing didn't think Min Nancheng could really handle his family affairs well. After all, so many days had passed, and Min Nancheng still hadn't come to any results.
"I'm sorry, I'm not alone. I have six children, and I don't want them to suffer." Lan Qingqing said firmly.
"I told my mother the child is mine, so the child won't suffer any injustice; I can guarantee that," Min Nancheng said.
Lan Qingqing never expected that Min Nancheng would tell his mother that the child was his. After all, Min Nancheng had always believed that the child was not his.
Now, in order to get his mother to accept her, he's lying and claiming the child is his. Even though the child is his, he doesn't know it!
Even though Min Nancheng was working hard for herself, she still refused to listen to others criticizing her.
She was afraid that she might accidentally hurt his mother.
Lan Qingqing really didn't want to have anything to do with Min Nancheng's mother anymore, so she deliberately changed the subject. Lan Qingqing said casually, "When are you leaving?" Her tone was light and casual, as if she were just asking an ordinary question. However, deep down, she was hiding a trace of tension that was hard to detect.
She wasn't entirely indifferent to Min Nancheng. From being indifferent at the beginning, she gradually grew accustomed to having him by her side.
At first, I was just satisfied with this person's appearance. Now, I don't even understand what kind of feelings I have for him.
In short, I was touched when I heard he was leaving. Perhaps this is what it means to be moved.
"We'll be departing for Licheng in three days. The handover at the county government is almost complete. The next few days will be spent finding a convoy," Min Nancheng said.
After hearing this, Lan Qingqing said, "Alright, the business here still needs someone to manage it for the time being. I'll come to Licheng to find you after the business here is settled in a while."
Upon hearing this, Min Nancheng knew that Lan Qingqing no longer intended to go with him. A sense of loss and reluctance welled up in his heart. He knew that Lan Qingqing was a very opinionated woman, and once she made up her mind, it was difficult to change it. He also knew that he couldn't force her to go with him, because he didn't want her to feel pressured or uncomfortable.
He gazed silently at Lan Qingqing, a hint of helplessness and longing in his eyes. He so desperately wished she could come to Licheng with him, so they could create a future together. But he also knew that Lan Qingqing had her own thoughts and goals; she couldn't possibly give up her career for him.
"Okay, then take good care of yourself," Min Nancheng said.
"You too, when you get to Licheng, you must be a good official and never become a corrupt official who preys on the people. If you need money, your family still has it," Lan Qingqing said.
They stood silently to each other, yet their eyes revealed mutual concern and longing. They both knew this separation might be temporary, or it might last three to five years. They didn't know what the future held, but they were both willing to trust each other and their love.
"I'll miss you," Min Nancheng said.
"Yes, have a safe trip," Lan Qingqing said.
Lan Qingqing felt a pang of bitterness in her heart. Just when she thought her life was peaceful and wonderful, Min Nancheng's mother appeared, and all that beauty was no longer so wonderful.
She could understand Min Nancheng's feelings; he was torn between his mother and his wife. He didn't want to offend either of them.
