In a chaotic world of infrastructure development, a woman's path to survival after being reborn
Chapter 27 Wild vs. Captive Tigers
For safety reasons, each group of people going up the mountain was escorted by soldiers. Su Li was in the last group to set off, so by the time they reached the top, the sky was already dark and it was about to get dark.
As evening approached, the mountains gradually grew cooler, and many people unconsciously covered their arms, clearly feeling the chill in the air.
Su Li had anticipated the situation before going up the mountain, so she put on a coat early on. Now she was in better condition than the others.
Knowing that she would be descending the mountain in a few days, Su Li did not bring too many things up the mountain, so her baggage was not heavy.
The cave is located halfway up the mountain, and even if the group walks quickly, they won't get there in a short time. So, they occasionally stop to rest, which doesn't take up too much time.
They were still some distance from the cave, and everyone was tired from walking, so they thought they would stop and rest for a while. But no one expected that an accident would happen at this moment.
A cool breeze blew by, and even though Su Li was wearing a coat, she felt a chill that sent shivers down her spine. In an instant, the hairs on Su Li's body stood on end, and an unprecedented sense of crisis welled up in her heart.
Su Li had never had this feeling before, so she always felt that things were not so simple.
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention, Su Li quietly found Mo Bei and asked, "Are there any large wild beasts in these mountains?"
Hearing this, Mo Bei looked around and then shook his head, saying, "No, we had our soldiers scout ahead of us before we came up the mountain. We didn't find any trace of large beasts. Besides, with so many of us here, those beasts wouldn't easily approach us."
The facts proved her guess to be false, but the chilling feeling lingered. Feeling uneasy, Su Li suggested, "For some reason, I have a feeling that something is watching us nearby. Why don't we send someone to investigate the area?"
Hearing this, Mo Bei did not object. He nodded and led a few soldiers to walk around and check the surroundings.
Seeing Mo Bei and the others leave, Su Li breathed a sigh of relief, but her heart remained uneasy as she quietly kept an eye on her surroundings.
As darkness was approaching, and not wanting to waste too much time, they prepared to set off after only a short rest. Before they could even get up, Su Li saw Mo Bei leading several soldiers hurriedly heading this way.
Seeing the tension on Mo Bei's face, Su Li quickly stepped forward and asked, "What happened?"
Upon hearing the question, Mo Bei hurriedly told the resting people to get up and run towards the woods to the south. As they ran, he instructed, "Don't ask anything, just run. There's a grove of trees to the south. Find a sturdy tree and climb up. Be careful and don't make a sound no matter what you see."
Hearing Mo Bei's instructions, no one dared to ask any more questions. They all grabbed their luggage and ran south into the woods without looking back.
Su Li realized that things were not going well, so she ran and quickly climbed up a big tree without hesitation.
Mo Bei, who was still wondering whether to help, immediately shut up when he saw Su Li's smooth movements. Seeing that everyone around him had climbed up a tree, he followed suit and found a big tree to climb up as well.
The moment after everyone climbed the tree, roar! Two huge, furry tigers appeared below. As everyone looked, there were still traces of blood in the tigers' mouths, indicating that they had just been eating.
In a year of famine, it was truly rare to see such a large tiger. The people in the tree dared not even breathe, for fear of accidentally attracting the attention of the tiger below.
The others were simply frightened, but Su Li was puzzled. Logically, tigers living in the mountains shouldn't grow this big at this time of year. Food is scarce in the mountains, and even if these two tigers had food, they wouldn't normally grow so strong.
Just as Su Li was wondering, the answer was revealed the next second: these two tigers were not wild, but were kept in captivity.
"Third Brother, what do you think Eldest Brother means by this? He didn't send anyone else, just the two of us. He even said he wanted us to come out and see what was going on outside, to probe the situation. Isn't this obviously sending us away?"
Su Li looked toward the source of the voices and immediately saw the two people talking. She realized that they were so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn't noticed anything around them.
"What can you do? The whole city is in their hands now, what can we do?" the man called Third Brother said with a resentful expression.
Upon hearing this, the man who had spoken earlier became even more enthusiastic and then whispered a suggestion: "Third Brother, why don't we lead our brothers to find another way out? Wouldn't it be wonderful if we led our brothers to occupy another city and become our own masters? Rather than being controlled by others, we should take the initiative."
The man was tempted by the suggestion, and a greedy glint appeared in his eyes, clearly indicating that he had taken the suggestion to heart.
Seeing that the man was interested, the man continued, "Third Brother, you are so powerful that you can even command tigers. Why do you still want to be subservient to others? Let's find our own city, be our own masters, have whatever we want, and do whatever we want without having to worry about what others think."
Upon hearing this, the man was completely moved and nodded, saying, "Then we need to find a suitable opportunity, otherwise my brother won't let this go easily."
"Don't worry, Third Brother, I've already found out. Eldest Brother is leading his men north tomorrow, this is a good opportunity!"
"You mean take this opportunity to leave?"
Upon hearing this, the two exchanged a glance, and then a shared ambition was revealed in their eyes.
Su Li and the others in the tree understood what was going on and realized the identities of the two. They quickly stayed quietly in the tree, not daring to make any noise.
The commotion under the tree continued. The two tigers, having sensed the disappearance of human presence, were pacing back and forth under the tree, clearly unwilling to give up.
Noticing the two tigers' behavior, the man stopped talking and walked straight towards them, clearly indicating that he was their tamer.
With their target gone, the two tigers became restless, so the man's attempts to calm them down were ineffective and instead provoked them to fight back.
Pushed to the ground by the tiger, the man's face turned ugly, and his eyes flashed with murderous intent.
The person who had been standing next to the man realized the seriousness of the situation and quickly ran forward to ask, "Third Brother, are they hungry? That's why they're becoming disobedient!"
The man stood up with the help of the person next to him. He looked at the two tigers, who were still restless, and was somewhat puzzled. But he still ordered the person next to him, "Bring up the food. I want to know what's going on."
Everyone, whether in the tree or below, heard this. Suddenly, the man's entourage appeared out of nowhere, each carrying two or three young children. Judging by their posture, it seemed they intended to…
