In a chaotic world of infrastructure development, a woman's path to survival after being reborn
Chapter 10 The End is in the Mountains
The noise outside grew louder and louder, and everyone present realized the seriousness of the situation. They knew they had to leave the city, and no one dared to hold them back.
The horrific scenes from her dream kept replaying in Su Li's mind. At this moment, she was somewhat fortunate to be with Zhao Zexuan and the others, because she wouldn't have been able to escape the city on her own.
……
These people must have planned this in advance, otherwise they wouldn't have created such a tunnel. Staring at the dark and narrow tunnel entrance, Su Li was stunned for a moment, and then followed.
Zhao Zexuan was following behind Su Li, so he noticed her pause earlier. He wanted to say something to explain, but before he could speak, Su Li caught up with him.
Seeing the scene before him, Zhao Zexuan said nothing and silently followed.
Mo Bei and Mo Nan, who were standing guard behind him, noticed this scene and exchanged a glance. Mo Bei's curiosity was almost overflowing, but it was stopped by Mo Nan's look.
The group groped their way through the dark tunnel in silence, no one spoke, the silence was unbearable.
Su Li wondered who dug this tunnel, as it was incredibly long. She felt like her feet were about to get blisters, and she still hadn't arrived.
Su Li shifted her legs uneasily, but before she could even sigh, she heard a sound behind her.
"We'll be there in a quarter of an hour, hang in there a little longer," Zhao Zexuan said in a low voice.
Upon hearing this, Su Li straightened up, hummed in response, and continued walking forward.
Perhaps it was Zhao Zexuan's encouragement, or perhaps it was because the tunnel had finally come to an end, but it felt like only a short while later, a glimmer of light appeared at the end of the road. That light was not natural light, but the glow of a burning torch.
Upon seeing the firelight, Su Li felt a little nervous, fearing that someone had discovered the tunnel. However, she glanced at the expressions of the people around her and found that they remained calm, as if they had anticipated the situation.
After observing this, Su Li felt a little relieved and silently followed the person forward.
Bang, bang, bang—three rhythmic sounds came from outside, followed by a response from inside, and then the tunnel entrance was opened from the outside.
"Come out, where is the general?" someone outside asked.
"The general is behind us, he'll be there soon." The voice rang out, then fell silent again.
The tunnel entrance was very small, only allowing one person to pass through at a time. So Su Li followed the guard out of the tunnel and was stunned by the scene before her.
There were hundreds of soldiers standing outside, with a cart next to every four soldiers. Each cart was piled high with goods in sacks, which looked to be grain.
Looking at the scene before her, Su Li was somewhat surprised, but she quickly fell silent and stood quietly to the side.
Zhao Zexuan followed Su Li out of the cave. As soon as he came out, he heard the soldiers shout, "General!"
Seeing the joy on the soldiers' faces, Zhao Zexuan nodded silently, then asked the deputy general waiting beside him, "Where are the others?"
Upon hearing this, the deputy general Zhongli Mei, who was waiting nearby, immediately explained, "I let them go in batches first. This is the last batch of people escorting the grain."
Zhao Zexuan nodded, then said to everyone present, "In that case, let's set off and get back before dawn."
The soldiers obeyed the order and then set off, each one both nervous and excited.
As the last cart was about to depart, Zhao Zexuan strode forward, hoisted a bag of grain onto his back, and then gestured to Su Li, "Get on, and hold on tight so you don't fall off."
Hearing this, Su Li was a little surprised. She looked at Zhao Zexuan, who was carrying a grain sack on his back, and said somewhat apologetically, "This is too much trouble. I can manage."
Before Su Li could say anything more, Zhao Zexuan interrupted her, saying, "There's still a long way to go. You won't be able to keep up. Besides, the marching speed will increase, and you probably won't be able to catch up."
Hearing this, Su Li glanced at Zhao Zexuan standing to the side, thanked him, and silently sat on the cart.
The surrounding soldiers noticed the extra woman in the ranks and cast curious glances, but none dared to ask because of Zhao Zexuan's imposing presence.
The procession had already started moving forward. Although the carts were loaded with grain, they were moving at a considerable speed. Zhao Zexuan, however, remained calm and carried a bag of grain alongside the carts.
Mo Bei and Mo Nan had witnessed the entire process and were both somewhat shocked. But after the initial shock, they immediately ran forward and said, "General, let us do it."
Upon hearing this, Zhao Zexuan did not agree. Instead, he said to the two of them, "Although we have left the city, we don't know what dangers may lie ahead. You two should be vigilant to prevent any accidents from happening."
Upon hearing this, Mo Bei and Mo Nan immediately became serious and replied, "Yes, your subordinates obey."
Su Li sat on the cart, listening to the three people's conversation, quietly keeping her presence to herself, without any intention of asking about the situation.
It must be said that a group of strong and sturdy soldiers really gave people a great sense of security. Being with them, at least you didn't have to worry about the refugees in your dreams.
The group's destination and purpose were unknown, and countless mysteries swirled in Su Li's mind, but she suppressed them all.
Su Li thought that at least she was safe for now, at least she had survived. As for the mysteries in between, she decided not to investigate too much. Knowing too many secrets could easily lead to death, and she still wanted to live.
……
After traveling a long way and taking many detours, we finally arrived at our so-called destination before dawn.
Jumping off the cart and looking at the rugged mountains and the uneven thatched huts around her, Su Li found it hard to believe that this was the group's "base camp".
Someone had tipped them off long before the group arrived, so now everyone in this small mountain village has come out of their houses and is standing at the crossroads to welcome them.
Zhao Zexuan had been surrounded as soon as he entered the village, and now he was being greeted with concern and care.
"Zexuan, you did all this without saying a word, you're going to worry your mother to death!" A woman, being supported by someone, said worriedly while holding Zhao Zexuan's hand.
Upon hearing this, Zhao Zexuan reassured her, "Mother, don't worry, I'm back now, and I even brought back some grain."
The grain transport team had all returned, as Madam Zhao naturally knew, but she couldn't suppress her worry.
The Zhao family wasn't small, but only a few were present. Su Li noticed that those surrounding Zhao Zexuan were all women, with no men present.
Recalling the few words Zhao Zexuan had once revealed, Su Li gradually began to have some guesses, but since they had not been verified yet, she remained quietly in the background.
